Rescuing the tiny house of Canada's most beloved folk artist. Maud Lewis painted the whole interior of her tiny one-room house — not just the walls, but the doors inside and out, the windowpanes, the breadboxes, the little staircase to the sleeping loft, the woodstove . . . almost everything her hand touched. Her home was a joy to behold. Fourteen years after Maud's death, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia acquired the Painted House, famous by then but badly deteriorated. Conservators faced unique challenges as they stabilized and restored this valuable artefact. In 1998, they installed it intact in the custom-designed Scotiabank Maud Lewis Gallery, complete with furnishings, painting materials, and everything else that made up Maud Lewis's diminutive dwelling.

After seeing the recent film, "Maudie", I became interested in learning more about artist Maud Lewis.....and the story of how her one-of-a-kindhouse ended up being inside a Museum. This book provided all of the information I expected and so much more. Lots of granular detailed information is included about how the exterior/interior was saved, including insightful photos. Sometimes it really does "take a village" to save something for posterity, and this book tells the story of the earliest/failed efforts that eventually lead to the ultimate/successful ones. Just like Maud herself, it seems that this house was meant to persist, endure and thrive. Well-done.

I love this book. I didn't expect it to have so much detail about Maudie's life, from childhood up. It's not a quick read, but interesting nevertheless. If you love Maudie, you'll love this book. The Painted House of Maud Lewis: Conserving a Folk Art Treasure

You will see how Maud Lewis lived and all of the color she had in her small life.She is someone that took what little life gave her and created a bigger life filled with joyful creations in bright colors!She is an inspiration and shows us all how we can make our lives much more than they are, just by following where our hearts lead us.

After seeing the movie Maudie, I really liked the artwork very much and wanted to see more. I recommend this little book, and if you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. In my opinion, it's one of the best films I've seen!
