Maud Lewis painted the whole interior of her tiny one-room house — not just the walls, but the doors inside and out, the windowpanes, the breadboxes, the little staircase to the sleeping loft, the woodstove . . . almost everything her hand touched. Her home was a joy to behold. Fourteen years after Maud's death, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia acquired the Painted House, famous by then but badly deteriorated. Conservators faced unique challenges as they stabilized and restored this valuable artefact. In 1998, they installed it intact in the custom-designed Scotiabank Maud Lewis Gallery, complete with furnishings, painting materials, and everything else that made up Maud Lewis's diminutive dwelling.

After seeing the recent film, "Maudie", I became interested in learning more about artist Maud Lewis.....and the story of how her one-of-a-kindhouse ended up being inside a Museum. This book provided all of the information I expected and so much more. Lots of granular detailed information is included about how the exterior/interior was saved, including insightful photos. Sometimes it really does "take a village" to save something for posterity, and this book tells the story of the earliest/failed efforts that eventually lead to the ultimate/successful ones. Just like Maud herself, it seems that this house was meant to persist, endure and thrive. Well-done.

About the Author

Matthieu Ricard received a PhD in molecular genetics from the Pasteur Institute in 1972 before departing his native France to study Buddhism in the Himalayas, eventually becoming a monk of the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Renowned also as a photographer and translator, he is the author of numerous previous books, including Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and Your World,  Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill, and, with his father, the late Jean-François Revel, The Monk and the Philosopher: A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life. A sometimes uncomfortable but excellent book. I ordered this book because I like Matthieu Ricards teachings. A vegetarian a long time ago, I thought I'd read this and not be surprised by much. I was. I also commend the author on presenting the case for a vegan/vegetarian diet with lots of scientific reasoning and studies to back up claims. Knowing the amount of water it takes to produce a quarter pound of beef was astonishing.

This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians (unfortunately, the only folks who will read it). The 4th chapter(which explains how agribusiness works and the suffering of the animals and people working in the business) is a little tough to take.I think it is meant to be that way. All meat eaters should read this book so they know what they are supporting with their actions and money.I like the author's writing and have read a few of his books.

The best historical and moral account on the topic of animal welfare to date. This is a masterful piece of research, exhaustively documented by footnote and citation. Anyone who reads this and continues to participate in the perpetuation of animal cruelty, through the consumption of animal flesh and other "uses" must surely be lost in deep self deception. Thank you, Matthieu Ricard.

I've read many books over the years on this topic, but this one was a bit different. It is more scientifically-based, so many people may find it a bit dry to read, but it's so well researched and eye opening that I really think it's an important book. Some parts were difficult to read, simply because it made me want to cry reading about things that we humans do to animals around the world. While I didn't learn anything new regarding the meat industry, I did learn more about vivisection, bull fighting, and the wild/exotic animal trade, among other things. Ricard covers all angles, making a brilliant case for compassion for animals. There were many quotes that I liked from this book, with my favorite being: "Most of us are fond of animals, but our compassion stops at the edge of our plate." Two thumbs up for "A Plea for Animals..."!

Thoughtful, well-researched, articulate argument for the cessation of suffering of animals.

This book is so well written and such humanity shines through in every word. The research is extensive and if you still could do anything to harm animals after reading this, well, I would be amazed.

A must read for anyone who would like to know all the ways we justify our mistreatment of animals.

I cannot recommend this book enough, it is high quality and Sarah Thompson does an excellent job. I think tattooers in particular would benefit immensely from this book. I collect Ukiyo-e and love Japanese tattooing and history, if you are the same, you need this book, and for what it provides compared to a lot of other tattoo books, it is a great value. All around wonderful book and purchase, I find myself looking at it all the time.

It is not so much a journal but a workbook on how to be a kid again. Pages are filled with off the wall activities that you can do anywhere, especially at work. You don’t need to be a creative person just follow the instructions on the pages and have fun. If you are creative then take it and let your own creativity flow. If you are a creative person and stuck this is the perfect book to break those blocks. I have every Squidoodle book and this one is my favorite. I sure hope there are more to come. I can get my Christmas shopping done early. I am stocking up on this book as it is perfect to make someone’s day.
