I'm sure you've had the experience of finding a box of mementos in your attic. While the items have little meaning to anybody else, the apparently-random collection is a "memory box" for you. A copy of the poem you wrote in 8th grade, a lost earring from a set you wore in high school, a dorky knick-knack that was once precious to you because it was a gift from a friend. Such boxes don't have much organization, but they can elicit complete sensory recall of an earlier time of your life.Still Flying is such a collection for Firefly fans. It's more like a "high school yearbook" than it is a set of short stories (there are a few, and they're good). Each cast member shares stories from the TV show, from how they got the part to their appreciation of the Browncoats fans to tales from the set. It's not just the actors; there's also input from behind the scenes people such as the stunt guy. Lots of photos of memorabilia, like the head of Jayne's statue or the Lassiter gun (which, I learned, was named after the Lassiter guy who started Pixar, apparently a friend of Joss' -- see, good trivia too).If you're a Firefly fan who is enthusiastic enough to identify the episodes by name (which I confess I am), you will enjoy this book. It's good bathroom reading, and I mean that in the nicest way; it's unlikely you'll want to read everything in one fell swoop. And like the memory box in your attic, sometimes it's more fun to contemplate and savor one item at a time.You don't NEED this book. But I think you'll like it.

Firefly gets the celebration it deserves in this book. The book has several parts, including interviews with cast and crew, background on story and prop design, and new original short stories by the scriptwriters.The interviews with cast and crew are mainly collected from previously published sources. It's great to have them all in one place, but no new material. Still, the interviews are insightful and the case is refreshingly open.Some of the background on the story development and prop designs really add depth. We only saw some of the items a handful of times so seeing them again was great. I particularly liked the section on the ships. A lot of thought went into the design of the Alliance ship, which only appeared briefly in Safe.The short stories are probably the reason to buy this book. Two of them are great. "What Holds Us Down" by Jane Epenson and "Take the Sky" by Jose Molina really add character depth. Molina's story shows the fate of Mal and the rest of the crew. It's not a happy ending, but it fits the tone of the series. "Crystal" has some nice development for River, but it takes place too much within the shadow of the movie "Serenity" (I won't explain what that means for fear of revealing spoilers, but the entire story foreshadows the movie). "Fun with Dick and Jayne" is a short cartoon about Jayne as a kid. Cute, but nothing special.If you are a diehard fan and want the full TV scripts as well, I recommend getting Firefly: A Celebration (Anniversary Edition), which contains everything, including "Firefly: Still Flying". I prefer this book because it is cheaper and contains the most interesting parts.

I read the description to this product and the mere handful of reviews before I chose to purchase it.Having now read it, I must say that I really do not find a single thing wrong with this book! It's original material, like Jane Esperson explaining the writing process on a Joss Whedon show, a large amount of pics that I have not seen in other "Firefly" books, and of course the 4 great original stories...well, ok, the 2-panel "Fun With Dick And Jayne" can hardly be called a story, though it was hilarious.There is a page that shows 6 of the shirts Jayne wore on the show (with a screen cap of each) which I appreciated, since 2 of them were ones I'd forgottenabout or never recalled seeing.There is also a storyboard of the "Battle at Serenity Valley" scene from the Pilot episode, which I enjoyed because it showed how well it matched what you see on screen.Of course the interviews with each cast member is taken from collected interviews, yet each was presented very well, in my opinion.There is even great coverage of the fan film "Done The Impossible" which I personally did not know about until I read it in this book, and will seek out as a result.****POTENTIAL SPOILER****It's a shame that in the book they state that there will be no sequel to "Serenity" however for me it wouldn't be worth it without Wash and Book anyway. For me, while I would love to finally learn answers to my lingering questions (What WAS Book's past? Was Inara actually quite a bit older and through some process remained youthful looking?) sometimes it's best to have an incomplete ending. With Firefly, I'm of the thought that we appreciate that we had it at all in the first place; we will always have Mal and the gang to revisit on DVD and Blu-Ray viewings.*****End of Potential Spoilers*****In a nutshell, I find this book to be a great addition to my Firefly/Serenity collection, and highly recommend it.

The sections I've read of the book so far are well written and easy to follow, and typically have good examples.But there were a couple areas I was dissapointed in: 1: The authors should have given a bit more advice on which classes are now preferred, which classes programmers really use, etc. Examples: In the Collections Framework section, I would have appreciated more advice about how to decide which is the best collection class to use, some guidelines or something; Java 2 has LOTS of collection implementations to choose from. The same is true for the java.io section; which file/io routines to programmers really use. How important is buffered IO in the real world? Is it worth the extra steps to code, etc. 2: The examples were generally good, though there are some changes. First of all, examples were repeated frequently with a few lines changed. It would be nice to see those specific new lines highlighted in some way. Also, in some cases, I would have liked an additional, new example vs. just repeating and modifying the previous example. But the examples weren't bad, certainly on a par with other books. I still would recommend the book, but not as a sole reference or tutorial.

I found this book very useful for learning Java (I am using it while I also read "Thinking in Java"). I am a beginning programmer, knowing a little html and vbscript so I don't have a background of C++ or C under my belt. This book takes you step by step and explains concepts that you build on to understand object oriented programming, classes, methods and so on. If you know C++, you won't have a problem at all. The examples are perfect if you are patient enough to type them in. I didn't find the downloadable .lst code very helpful, but the examples are correct in this book.

"Complete Reference" is definitely a perfect name for this book. It is complete and I find myself using this book often. It is also well written and easy to follow.

To this end, I chose Herbert Schildt's "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition" not only for its extensive library, but also because of Herbert Schildt's wonderful writing that is easy to read and understand quickly.Herbert Schildt subdivided "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition" into four parts: tutorial, library, software development and applications. Part I (the first 346 pages) is a Java tutorial, organized similarly to Herbert Schildt's other book that I purchased, "Java 2: A Beginner's Guide, Second Edition". However, the tutorial in this book is more condensed than in the guide, which has over 500 pages. If you're an experienced OO Programmer, you'll probably be a bit bored. Really the first 6 chapters cover all the basics of creating a Java program (including data types, operators, classes, and control statements). After this initial discussion, the book gets a bit more complicated by diving into inheritance, threads, and I/O.What I really enjoyed about this book is the rest of it: after this discussion on Java language principles, the rest of the book is a how-to on the various Java libraries. For example, in the chapter on the java.util library, there is a section on the HashSet class. There is a description of the class (including various overloaded constructors) and a good example of how to use it. Think O'Reilly's Java In A Nutshell but with a lot more instruction and examples.Another thing I really enjoyed about the reference section of this book, is that "gotchas" are clearly outlined. Where there are tricky little things you wouldn't think about, or differences in how Java behaves depending on what your might expect, this book explains these issues. In any case, the reference section covers the java.lang, java.util, java.io libraries in addition to providing detailed discussion of using networking and AWT libraries.

I moved to Anchorage a few years ago. I wasn't hiking much. I'm not embarrassed to say, I have a healthy respect for the bears. After all, I am a nurse and I've seen what a bear can do when surprised, or angry. Wanting to hike I bought this book and a couple of others. I noticed in one hike the author listed some wrong driving directions. No big deal. But now I take the book out and go for a hike only to get lost because of her BAD directions. I happen onto a guy who just happened to have built the trail system in Kincaid. He looked at the map and said "Nope, this map and info are wrong". To boot, my map in my GPS looks different than hers. So..... Unless you are interested in dying in the woods outside of Anchorage, don't bother with this book....

This guide is fine for the contents, but the kindle copy should have handled tables better (the original table is spread over two pages on printed version). On the other hand, the kindle version has useful hyperlinks to websites and maps can be zoomed in on the Kindle version. Overall, however, I have found another guide (a Falcon book) more useful for hikes around Anchorage for me.

This helpful book has a table in the front that tells at-a-glance where (in relation to Anchorage) the trail is located, the distance in miles, the expected completion time in hours, how strenuous it is, and what terrain one can expect to encounter. The write-up for each individual hike is entertainingly written and made me want to visit each location. There are good directions for finding the trailheads and for staying on the main path or venturing into less-traveled territory. I quite enjoyed this book and wish I'd had more time in Alaska to discover even more of the area's beauty.

I liked this hiking book a lot! It had some hikes that weren't in some of the other books for Anchorage. It was easy to navigate and I mainly liked that it had a lot of hikes close by!
