Five stars, good read for beginners.

Fast service. Highly recommend. Thank you!

Joan R. Mertens, Curator in the Department of Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan, has chosen thirty-five prime Greek vases to explore and explain the meanings behind these richly puzzling works of art. She manages to 'decode' the figures and the stories they relate as well as inform the viewer of the intricacies of Greek art and communication.Greek vases served specific utilitarian functions, and they also afforded outstanding artists, some of whom signed their work, a medium for depicting both the details of daily existence and aspects of their gods, goddesses, and heroes. Here are the garments, implements, athletic competitions, and marriage and funerary rituals of Greeks who lived from the seventh through the fourth century B.C. But of particular interest is the involved illustration of the mythological figures and stories, for instance, the goddess Athena with her helmet, spear, and shield, and the great hero Heracles, from his first exploit as a baby to his elevation as an immortal at the end of his earthly life. The exceptional group of works assembled in this volume, the second in the Metropolitan Museums ongoing teaching program about the cast riches that museum holds, conveys the extent to which the culture of ancient Greece is still apparent today. Urns and jars inspired by Greek models are a staple in all types of public and private spaces. The meander patterns, palmettes, and other florals that adorn ancient vases recur in all kinds of modern objects. And the concept of the hero, or superman, first formulated and given visual form in ancient Greece is integral to Western culture. The book is richly illustrated with color photographs of the various Greek vases in question. A fine addition to the world of art books... and history books! Grady Harp, July 11

The plot just takes off . . . This book is so good, I actually put it down, and I briefly entertained the notion of moving back to Detroit." —Nancy Pearl on NPR’s Morning Edition"All of us begin in grace and great promise and, staring at the door left open behind, wonder where they’ve gone. Stephen Mack Jones knows this, as does his narrator August Snow, as does their battered city, Detroit. Jean Cocteau believed the world is a misunderstanding. We read searching for stories that help us untangle some of that misunderstanding; August Snow is one."  —James Sallis "[A] witty, mayhem-packed first novel . . . Snow’s own voice has echoes of Raymond Chandler’s. Be assured that when the showdown comes, Snow—an action-hero with the heart of a mensch—and his crew prove up to that task." —The Wall Street Journal  "Wonderful." —Nancy Pearl for KUOW Seattle "Stephen Mack Jones's rock-solid debut, August Snow, is powered by the outgoing personality of the title hero and his deep affections for his hometown of Detroit. This author proves himself a natural entertainer." —Chicago Tribune "Jones, a Detroit-area poet and playwright brings the city, its environs, and its eateries to vital life in a mystery coiled around the contemporary crime du jour of cyber-finance meddling. His is that rare tale that, despite its thriller-level violence, maintains a fiercely warm heart at its core—and ends far too quickly." —The Boston Globe "[Stephen Mack Jones] has deftly created a unique multi-faceted character in the best hard-boiled tradition, easily enjoyed by those who appreciate quick-thinking, fast-shooting detectives. This is a well-polished first novel with exceptionally strong characters and unexpected plot twists; it’s a superb start for a new series."—Lansing State Journal  "Mack Jones’s prose is razor sharp and bleeds compassion. Set in Detroit, this noir novel has energy and wit to spare. A stellar debut." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "[A] polished, gripping debut. Poet Stephen Mack Jones’ novel bristles with energy, compassion, humor and a page-turning plot." —Minneapolis Star Tribune "Compelling . . . strong one-on-one dialogue keeps the story moving. August Snow is an entertaining read that gives Jones—and Detroit—plenty to celebrate." —Toledo Blade "August Snow is an absolute joy to read from start to finish; Stephen Mack Jones has infused a real love of Detroit into every page. Characters are full of life, with August being a modern day anti-hero to a T, burdened with responsibility he never asked for but with the moral compass to ensure that he gets the job done regardless . . . We can only hope this isn’t the last we see of him."—The Michigan Daily"[August Snow] is persistent, courageous, true to his friends... Now here is an interesting book." —Lincoln Journal Star "Detective fiction needs a shot in the arm every now and again. That was the feeling of reading Stephen Mack Jones . . . The August Snow series is as promising as any crime fiction to come around in a long while, tapping into the iconoclasm and social justice streaks of midcentury noirs, but taking them in a modern direction, exposing human trafficking rings, abuses of immigrant communities, gentrification, and economic declines and revivals. It’s heady, exhilarating stuff."  —CrimeReads "As far as compelling reads, this book is what you want. The book takes the reader into the depths of Detroit, exploring, race, class and the cities that contain it all." —The Rumpus "Lyrical and sly and rich with a mix of poetry and wisecracking... [the] cast of characters is lovingly drawn, and the setting is a 21st-century map of mean streets that say something about our world." —Reviewing the Evidence  "No doubt this is detective fiction on steroids, but boy, can that be a lot of fun!"—Daniel Goldin, Boswell Book Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin"[A] hugely likable hero who uses his wealth to bring his neighborhood back to life; a feel for the vitality and pride in run-down urban neighborhoods as good as George Pelecanos on Washington, D.C.; appealing supporting characters who give life to the book's theme of the solace to be found in communities. It adds up to a very pleasurable read . . . We are at the beginning of an excellent new series." —Kirkus Reviews "Drawing on the hard-boiled detective template established by Raymond Chandler and refined by Robert B. Parker, Jones introduces a sleuth who is noble, steadfast in a fight with his fists or guns, and manages to charm the ladies. Readers will definitely want to see more of August Snow." —Library Journal "Strong prose and a hero with a distinctive multicultural background (August is half African-American, half Mexican) . . . Convincing smartass dialogue brings the Detroit denizens of poet and play-wright Jones's first novel to life." —Publishers Weekly  "This debut novel by poet and playwright Jones offers a welcome inside view of a city in turmoil and the viewpoint of a Mexican and African American protagonist who now finds himself among gentrifiers . . . where shelves lack heroes of color, add Jones’s work." —Booklist

This one was a can-I-read-all-day Saturday followed by a maybe-I-should-skip-church Sunday kinda book. Good thing I finished before the workweek started or it might have been a I-have-a-little-cough-cough-cold Monday. Stephen Mack Jones' first novel August Snow is that good. August Snow is a former Detroit police detective who blew the whistle on the city's mayor, was unceremoniously fired--and later won damages for wrongful termination. He's filthy rich. And determined to transform the lives of his neighbors and the street he grew up on in Mexicantown. After August turns down a request to help a wealthy white socialite, he is quickly drawn into investigating her suspicious death just a few days later. (Actually, it's suspicious to August--the police call it a suicide.) Like so many other crime novels, the story turns on the tropes of the trade: cars with blackout windows tailing, surprise visits by thugs, gun fights, and a mysterious computer hacker thrown in for good measure. But the genre wasn't what made August Snow so fun--for this Michiganian it was the references to the Motor City and all things Michigan: the Tigers and Lions, Fisher Theater, Eight Mile, and Woodward Ave. The crooked mayor serving time for his crimes. Even a peek at our up North with a trip to Traverse City.Even that wouldn't be enough to carry a novel, though, no matter how much it felt like home. No, the reason to read August Snow is the man himself. He is a smart ass who leaves no dig undug, a rebel who is more interested in what's right than who's in charge. He loves children and old ladies alike with the same good heart, and his friends are as dear as brothers. He wants his neighborhood safe so kids could once again play ball in the street. He thinks more about his neighbors than he does himself. But heartache is no stranger to August, and he has walled his off against any more loss. August Snow is a Real Man--and I say that without a trace of irony. I loved the guy.Â

A character like the eponymous protagonist, an ex- Marine and ex-cop, comes along about as often as snow in August, and he embodies attributes that, as first glance, seem to fit together no better than that weather and that month: a penchant for dissipation, cynicism, and righteous violence coexist with a deep empathy and extreme moral idealism that sometimes border on the sentimental. But it's precisely because he's such a tough customer that he can get away with so many acts of random kindness. He is thoroughly engaging and believable. And as he works toward solving the mystery, he seems also to be putting himself together, or back together. While he's center stage, his home town, Detroit, comes so vividly and realistically to life that it must be considered a major character too. This smart, violent, ingeniously plotted who-done-it with a soul kept my attention beginning to end. I really enjoyed it. Recommended!

August Snow was one of the best crime novels I've read in a very long time. It was action packed, yet not over-the-top. I loved the fact it was written in and about Detroit where I grew up, so I was able to make a connection with the people and places. The characters were well fleshed out and the combination of humor, comradarie, family, mystery and intrigue, left me wanting more of August Snow. It truly is an excellent work of believable fiction and I truly hope the author has plans to turn it into a series. Cannot wait to find out what happens next!

What more is there? Mr. jones has brought his characters to lifeIn a most engaging way. I really cared for August and all of the delightful people in his neighborhood. The dialogue is witty and deadly. The story will keep you turning the pages till late at night.Thank you, Mr. Jones, and am really looking forward to anotherbook in the series. Please hurry.

There is truly no place like Detroit. Anywhere. Our secret and we like it that way. Jones makes the city a big part of a the story. Maybe a little too detailed for people who don't live here, but it worked for me.The story is nothing new, but the storyteller makes all the difference in this case.Very nicely done Mr. Jones. Hope you're working on another one.

So I'm really torn on this review. As someone from this area I love how he incorporated real places and real events into the story. I could fully picture the places where the events took place. But the story is so far fetched that it stretches the limits of belief. And while I understand it's fiction it's just stretched too far in my opinion. That said, I hope there are further Detroit stories because the shot of nostalgia is nice and I think Mr. Jones does a nice job capturing the feeling of living in this area. With so much time spent in Mexicantown including the famous train station would be super cool too :-)

August Snow is a great read although incomplete. I second the opinion of another reviewer who thought this would be a better second book. I suspect Mr. Jones was teasing a prequel by leaving events in Snow’s past undeveloped—his investigation into the death of the victim’s husband, his lawsuit against the DPD, the deaths of his former lover and parents. I prefer series that unfold chronologically and would have rated August Snow 5 stars if it had.

I really liked the descriptive action scenes. Easy to see in you mind what was happening. Lots of characters, but no trouble keeping them straight. Great plot! Well written. My only problem with the book, was him calling Traverse City area Northern Michigan. I suppose if you are only thinking about the lower peninsula, that would be true. BUT, northern Michigan is in the Upper Peninsula!! Otherwise, great read!

Dan Abnett brings Aquaman back into fresh water in his DC Rebirth Vol. 1: The Drowning. Arthur Curry (Aquaman) must overcome Black Manta, hatred from surface dwellers, American politics, and Mera's doubts all while a new enemy gathers in the darkness. The New 52 series was such a delight to read that I am excited for the future of Aquaman again. The art is pretty good, but I would say it's not quite on the level of quality and detail that The New 52 had yet. Abnett's understanding of Aquaman's difficulties and situation is truly refreshing as a fan of Aquaman. He touches on the many problems that Arthur must overcome to be the hero Aquaman. It's all rather well done. I'm happy with this new beginning.

Aquaman was one of my childhood favorites... way back in Superfriends Days. The reboot attempts to address his limited appeal and the quirkiness of his skills. He is supposed to be a tier one hero but he always feels like a tier three hero.... Do they succeed? Well, sorta. His love affair and the people around him are poorly explored and too shallow to be meaningful. His connection to his Arthur Curry world is mentioned but also underdeveloped. He has an enemy who really doesn't like him. Humdrum. So what is the direction they take? That he is a political leader of a great nation, that he rules the Seas.... it is a good tack to take, and I wish it were better executed, but it really isn't. Is it worth it to follow? Yes, if you love the idea of Aquaman. Yes, if you are willing to push through a couple of volumes (Vol 3 got me much more excited about the series). No, if you just, erm, fishing around

This collection is incredible. The dynamics of political tension, romance, strong female characters, an true hero and a villian that grows in depth. I went into this comic not liking the DC universe as a marvel fan and came out and immediately had to read more. Aquaman has quickly become my favorite super hero.

This volume sets up Aquaman's mythos perfectly for someone (like me) who knows very little about the character and his world! Definitely one of the best DC Rebirth titles!

I had never been a huge fan of Aquaman, until now. The book starts off a little slow, but it does a great job with the character Aquaman. Born of land and sea, he hopes to bridge the gap between the surface and the ocean. The art is great as well. I would like to see a little bit more emotion and character development from Aquaman, but other than that, great story. The door is wide open for maybe the best run on Aquaman yet.

I have a been a big Aquaman fan since the flashpoint series and 52. It's is so cool to see him using all his wit and strength to bring balance to both his worlds.

I was really surprised by this, the political aspect meshing with the superhero aspect of Aquaman was incredibly done and I need to read more. My only complaint is that some of the artwork could have been a little better, but it certainly improves.

Never gave the character a fair chance... I watched a YouTube video by Variant Comics... I decided to give him a chance... I am certainly glad i did...
