I learned a lot of cool tricks from the Playing With Fire web site, so I could hardly wait for the book to be published. The book is filled with a lot of great tips and tricks (many from the web site) for Fireworks users, both novice and pros. This is NOT a how-to-use Fireworks book, you already need to know the basics, but its tutorials are clear and easy to follow. I only wish that the book expanded a lot more over the original web site. Even so, I strongly recommend Playing With Fire.

Without a doubt this is the most valuable book on Fireworks I own. It expands your creativity and opens up an entire world of techniques, effects and all-round nifty ideas. I'm so grateful to the authors for writing it!

Actually, I had a very different- somewhat typical review planned for "Playing With Fire", when I read a negative review that was posted on this site. 'They' were disappointed that the book had 'nothing to do with fireworks 4' . After reading in utter amazement I realized 'the rub'. The difficulty is confusing 'how to do Fireworks 4 MECHANICS' with 'now that you have it downloaded, now what? I would bet that if that disgruntled reviewer purchased Joe Lowery's Fireworks Bible first, they would come out with a wealth of 'mechanical' knowledge covering material for the very elementary user thru to the advanced. And sometime along the way, I have absolutely no doubt that that very same reviewer, unless they already had an extensive (emphasize the word - extensive) art background, would begin hungering for a book that showed them how to put all these fabulous tools to work - creating artwork. 'Playing with Fire' admittedly does not begin with..."so you just downloaded Fireworks 4 and want to know where to start." There are many manuals and books for that. Where 'Playing with Fire' does begin, is when the 'computerartist' has finished the basic tutorials, copy-catted what he was taught and added his own little 'bent' to the image or idea, but now is ready to develop his very own creations from 'soup to nuts'. But how is he going to do that? Playing with Fire closes 'the gap' between those who have Fireworks 4 and those who can create spectacular work using Fireworks 4. Not only does the book teach mechanical aspects beyond the 'baby basics'(I can't count the number of insights I received and I began with Fireworks 2!), it dissects artwork using a software that is already within the user's hands. There is plenty of artwork 'how to' manuals out there, but many of them presuppose you know where to access and apply your tools.It takes the reader step by step, point by point showing you not only what to 'draw' or paint - but where to access the tools within Fireworks. It was because of this book I now know how to create an effect that I have been seeking the answer to for nearly two years! Because I saw my answer was in that book, I need to confess - I actually went into a bookstore of all things (unheard of thing for me to do since ...!) and paid ... MORE!!! - because I simply couldn't wait a moment longer. Then lo and behold I found ideas I didn't even know you could do in Fireworks! So, Dear Reader, if you want to have the answers to the questions before you even know you need to ask them, about 'how do they do that?' artwork using Fireworks 4, get this book.

"Playing With Fire" is one of those books that readers are going to love or are going to hate. You will love this book if you already have been introduced to Fireworks in the past and are in search for some new ideas for graphical design. You will hate this book if you are trying to learn the fundamentals of how to use Fireworks 4. If you are a beginner you should work through the Fireworks tutorial that came with the software and possibly another beginner level book such as "Dreamweaver 4 Fireworks 4 Studio: A Beginner's Guide". If you already have used Fireworks and are intermediate or advanced then this book should be in your library. When I first read through the book I felt as though it needed more volume to justify the price, after all most books on Fireworks are 500 pages or more. Then I realized as I experimented with some of the projects that this book is about creativity and originality. The thing that sets most web design apart from the crowd is graphics that catch the eye of your audience and make them want to read further. This book has several design elements that most Fireworks users will find as valuable inspiration that they may apply to their web pages. "Playing With Fire" does not teach you how to use Fireworks, it teaches you how to take the next step with Fireworks and create professional designs.

The authors of this book are determined to play to the weaknesses of Fireworks, as if trying to prove it's a better image editor than the big gun, Photoshop. In doing so, they completely ignore the strengths and value of the programme as a comping and layout tool for web design. Whole chapters are devoted to...Fireworks' text abilities, while very little is made of it's superior vector capabilities. Also to it's detriment, the book is structured in response to newsgroup postings and so plays to the intelligence of your average usenet poster, seeking technical support. If you're looking for "recipes" for bog standard, dated looking web graphics and effects, this is the book for you. However, if you're looking to discover and utilise the power of Fireworks, I highly recommend Fireworks 4 Expert Edge, a far more valuable use of money and time. For some reason, PWF has been positioned as some kind of companion to Al Sparber's DW4 Magic--don't be taken in, as it's not project-oriented, reveals little beyond it's own narrow objectives and is riddled with inaccuracies and poorly written instruction. Coupled with a useless CD to boot.

I am a knitting instructor who has been knitting for 30 years and I knit at an expert level and I design my own sweaters. I own approximately 300 knitting books and I have purchased just about every skill building book out there, including the predecessor to this one. The improvements that have been made in this edition are significant and are worth the upgrade. This could literally be the only knitting book in your library and it will get you from beginning knitter to expert.You will learn everything, and I mean everything you need to know to become a great knitter. This book starts with the very basics and brings you right through to expert knitting. The only thing that is not in here is "couture knitting" but that is a niche market and if you get to that point, you can buy Catherine Lowe's "Ravell'd Sleeve" online for $40. (That's another book that's worth the price if you get to that level).Here is the layout of this hard-cover coffee table sized book's color coded chapters ( there are extensive well done diagrams and photos in every chapter)1. It is indeed greatly expanded and updated. I own the 2002 edition and have used it quite a bit as a reference book. This book is larger, making the many illustrations and diagrams easy to see. The page numbers have returned to the outside of the page. The 2002 book was laid out differently.I like the sections on design, modular knitting, and lace blocking the most. I have a lot to learn from them. I am a little disappointed in some of the very general instructions, such as the short paragraph given to creating vertical buttonholes. On the other hand, I appreciate the detailed treatment of doing intarsia.I was disappointed to see that the moebius section and how-to did not include the moebius cast-on, but just said to twist your piece or twist a circular cast-on when joining. Section 12 has many completely dark-blue swatches that make stitch definition hard to see. Dark blue is also used as the base piece when illustrating a lighter border or band. That's not so bad. Some of the knitting on the sample pieces could have had more regular stitches or better blocking. I mean -- they're supposed to be samples in an ultimate knitting book! I found a few typos such as the perplexing "CATHCHING" in one header.Overall, I think it's worth acquiring, even if you own previous editions.

I had the original version of this book and absolutely loved it. When I heard that there was a revised edition, I decided to part with the old one and upgrade. I am not disappointed. If you only have one knitting book, this is the one to have. It goes into so much detail on literally any topic that you need. The instructions are very clear and easy to understand. The pictures are excellent. This is definitely the gold standard of knitting instruction, no matter what your level.

If someone were to request a book recommendation for a knitting book that spans technique, method, and skill level, this is the one. It is well illustrated and comprehensive. Buy it for the new knitter and they will not outgrow it. Buy it for the veteran and they will likely find continued support for growth. Highly recommended.

Kathy Baldock is the founder and Executive Director of Canyonwalker Connections, whose mission is to help repair the breach between the Christian church and the LGBT community through education, encouragement, and engagement. She is one of the most vocal advocates for inclusion within the conservative church and the founder of the str8apology movement, bringing LGBT people and straight Christians together at Gay Pride events to reflect the love of Jesus. She is the mother of two straight adult children, and is honored to serve as a spiritual mother to hundreds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender children. Kathy is an ordained minister who lives in Reno, Nevada.

This is the best book I have read on the history of LGBTQ treatment by the church. I bought this for a gay Christian women's book study. It was so in depth and so good that we actually studied it twice! This book doesn't just hit the high points - the 6 verses of the Bible that seem to speak toward homosexuality - the points that Matthew Vines and other writers discuss. This book goes much deeper and has the research and references to back it up. It is so well-referenced that we ended up using works mentioned in the footnotes for further study ourselves.The author does a good job of bridging the divide between church people and queer people. Whether you're approaching this book from the position of a conservative religious person or from a secular queer activist perspective, I think this book can help you see the other side. It can be particularly eye-opening to thinking Christians to see how they have been at times used and manipulated to further political agendas - that is it often politics dictating the church's treatment of gay people, not the other way around as is commonly assumed.I think a lot of the queer history presented here is very interesting and informative. A lot of LGBT people may not be aware of some of the historical content presented here. Highly recommended. This book is so in depth that I would recommend buying it, not borrowing it so that you can reference it again.

Thoroughly loved this book.It is well-researched, well-sourced, well-written, and obviously born out of a passion for seeing and loving people for who God made them to be. This book can help us take a step out of our box long enough to wonder if we've been told the whole truth. Even if one doesn't fully agree with all of the author's conclusions, at the very least this book shakes the ground below the feet of idealism and self-righteousness.I can't speak highly enough about the lengths to which the author has gone to give relevant details behind events we all know happened, but don't know the rest of the story. I particularly appreciated the chapter on HIV/AIDS.If you're looking for a book dealing with homosexuality within the Christian world which is not written out of fear or anger or bitterness or condescension, this is it. The tone is one of empathy. Hope for better treatment of a subset of our world's population. A desire to present facts in a way that can help us draw more informed conclusions.

Kathy Baldock's impressive research and tenacity to get answers is like a missing piece of history, found. Baldock does a just job in uncovering elements of the LGBTQIA story and many parts of history and psychology she writes about I was completely unaware of beforehand and helped me to gain a much deeper and broader scope of LGBTQ history. This is a masterful work that should be in any person's library wanting to delve deeper into the debate and/or a first book to read for anyone needing better perspective on the whole topic. I would dare say I could see this book in university classrooms in the future.

The first thing the reader of “Walking the Bridgeless Canon – repairing the breach between the Church and the LGBT community (WTBC)” will notice is the amount of research that has gone into the work. It’s impressive. Far from being a dull academic work though it is ultimately very personal and extremely readable.I first met the author, Kathy Baldock, in 2008 when I was speaking at the Evangelical Network’s conference in Arizona. I’d talked about the 100 Revs, one hundred ministers who’d signed a written apology to the LGBTI community and marched in Sydney’s famous Pride parade, Mardi Gras. Kathy was just beginning her journey at this stage and getting to know people in our community. Soon after this she began her “Hurt by Church? Get a Straight Apology Here” campaign. And the rest, as they say, is history.Since the birth of the first “gay church” in 1968 most LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex) Christians were forced to find places of safety within those churches or remained in the closet in non-affirming churches. There was a huge divide and much hostility. Over the following decades an enormous amount has been written about homosexuality and the bible. New understandings have emerged and LGBT people of faith come out not only about their sexuality but also their faith. The numbers of inclusive churches and denominations grows exponentially each year.Like Baldock, many straight Christians have been challenged by the new reality and are looking for answers. There is of course much work to do within society and particularly religion. This is why WTBC is so important. What if there was a work that essentially covered all the areas where people are seeking answers? Baldock has done the work. This book is not only a beautiful expression of her journey but of her discoveries and friendships made along the way. And so much more. I guess we could call it the “one stop shop” for straight Christians to get their answers about the science of sexual orientation and gender identity, the scriptures, history, the LGBTI community and their relationships etc.I often say “The enemy is not individuals, churches, 'ex-gay' organisations or political parties; the enemy is ignorance.” WTBC is the ideal way for people to overcome ignorance and become more educated and informed. This is one of the most important books to date. It really unravels the media spin the religious right use to oppress GLBT people, unfolds how it came to pass, how gay Christians have positively impacted the conversation by thier lives and witness, and show the earliest history of the GLBT movement. It is historically accurate showing whT has happened on both sides of the table, and even shows how deceptive ex gay ministries have been. So. Much so that most of them have taken an honest look at their message and disbanded. Who are the key stake holders. How did AIDS change the picture. This book is one you have to buy and then get another to give away because you won't part with your own, that's my take on it anyhow!
