From School Library Journal
According to Simmons (Odd Girl Out; The Curse of the Good Girl), founder of the nonprofit Girls Leadership, toxic messages about success and a burning drive to achieve no matter the cost have resulted in a 25 percent increase in already skyrocketing teen depression rates. The author describes how society pushes a "develop confidence" message to young women, which becomes code for yet another area to work on, in an era in which Supergirl is the baseline. At the same time, social media has contributed to teens disconnecting from parents and friendships—those relationships that are the most vital to their growth and resiliency. Meanwhile, parents themselves struggle with myths that tarnish their relationships with their teenager as they come up against a culture that advocates hyperattentive control of all aspects of their child's life. Here, Simmons interviews 96 girls from a variety of backgrounds to analyze the damaging messages they received ("what you accomplish matters more than what you learn," "everyone is doing better than you") and the often destructive results. She encourages strategies to help steady daughters and propel them forward with new messages, while correcting harmful core beliefs along the way. VERDICT A fascinating read that provides ideas for combatting the "not enough" ideals that are devastating young girls.—Julia M. Reffner, Richmond, VA

This is the best book I’ve read in a long time. I bought it thinking that it would be useful to me in the way I serve as a role model to the girls in my life, but actually, it’s becoming incredibly eye opening about my own behaviors and what I notice in the women around me. This book is written and marketed towards girls, but I think it is invaluable to women as well. I’ve learned so much and I can assure you that this beautiful ok will change the way you think about yourself and the way you can support the girls in your life. Enjoy it! It’s a gem. In addition to reading the book I listened to the audiobook and it was great.
Torn between the desire for your daughter (and/or son, truth be told) to succeed and the concern about losing your kiddo in the process? This book is for you. In "Enough As She Is,"girl expert Rachel Simmons takes our succeed-at-all-costs culture head-on, exposing the damage it inflicts and giving guidance on how to help your child experience true success without getting sucked in to the demands of unreasonable societal expectations. EASI provides reinforcement to listen to your gut and let your child follow her (his) heart. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I'm the mom of bright kids, and I want the opportunities of the world for them. At the same time, I am appalled by the resume-building expected of *children* and by the pressure to market our kids so that they can succeed. EASI is reassurance that being genuine and true still leads to meaningful success.
Anyone who works with girls, has a girl, is a girl, was a girl, knows a girl or wants to make a difference for a girl should check this one out. All the stuff that I see, hear and talk with girls about every day in my work is so beautifully put together here. Highly recommend.
Just started reading this and cannot put it down. I am living this with my 16 year old daughter right now and have already found some very helpful tips!
Repetitive and droning. Essential message is good but frankly you need to start when they are little. Not in high school.
There is nothing not to like about this incredibly valuable book. As a parent and clinical social worker, I see these issues on a daily basis and cannot say enough about what we can and should do to promote the self worth of girls. Thank you, Rachel.
excellent read for anyone with a teen age daughter!
Another great book from Rachel Simmons! So relevant to today’s society. A must read for anyone!
