Review

The realm of the cloud does not countenance loss, but when we touch it, we corrupt it. The word for such a system – a memory that preserves, encrypts and mystifies a lost love-object – is indeed melancholy. Hu's is a deeply melancholy book and for that reason, a valuable one.―New ScientistBut the thing about a cloud, Tung-Hui Hu reminds us in his mesmerizing new book, A Prehistory of the Cloud, is that you can only see it from a distance..... A Prehistory of the Cloud is Hu's imaginative attempt to bring this abstraction into clearer focus. It's informed as much by his current jobs (English professor and poet) as his old one (network engineer), and his approach is eclectic and unpredictable, full of unexpected riffs on Victorian sewage systems, the history of television, counterculture seekers, and the chilling final scene of Francis Ford Coppola's paranoid classic 'The Conversation.'―New YorkerWitty, sharp and theoretically aware, Hu deconstructs this much-discussed but poorly understood 'cultural fantasy'.―The GuardianAPrehistory of the Cloud enhances our understanding of the power of digital networks and addresses the influences of digital networks on net users' lives. Hu assists the reader in recognizing how the cloud functions in the contemporary digital environment by looking at the cloud through the older networks as underlying layers that have helped to construct this development.―Digital Scholarship in the Humanities

Before we dismantle the cloud in our fight against the centralization of power, it's crucial to know its history. Thanks to Tung-Hui Hu's excellent book, A Prehistory of the Cloud, we now do.―Geert Lovink, media theoristHu's riveting genealogy of the cloud takes us into its precursors and politics, and boldly demonstrates how fantasies of sovereignty, security, and participation are bound up in it. Much more than a data center, the cloud is a diffuse and invisible structure of power that has yielded a data-centric order. Imaginative and lucidly written, this book will be core to digital media studies.―Lisa Parks, Professor of Film and Media Studies, University of California, Santa BarbaraTung-Hui Hu's A Prehistory of the Cloud is a powerful genealogy of the historical infrastructure underlying the image of the cloud as disembodied, virtual object―an image that has come to dominate the Internet of social networks, algorithms, and big data. If looking right into the cloud might blind us, there is much worth in understanding how this 'amorphous form' has come to signify the nebulous character of network societies while also materially and symbolically reinventing old modes of power. Beautifully and yet plainly written, both abstract and concrete, Hu's A Prehistory of the Cloud is bound to be an enduring contribution to our historical and political understanding of network technologies.―Tiziana Terranova, author of Network Culture: Politics for the Information Age

Although I'm a huge believer that semantics impact thinking, the fact that so many of his arguments are rooted in anecdotes or connotations makes this a difficult read at times. That said, it certainly gets one thinking and is enlightening for non-engineers about internet infrastructure and regulation.

A scholarly yet readable "prehistory" of our cloud-based information age, a more up-to-date study than James Gleick's INFORMATION, and written in a rigorously researched yet poetical style that is a delight for general readers. Highly recommended.

What you will find in this book:- A beautifully written narrative about how the cloud became to be what it is today, from the physical infrastructure to the other constructs (including political).- Almost poetic language, which is a rarity for such a technical field.- Without a doubt, insight or two you didn't know about - or think about.- Food for thought; you will never think about the "cloud" quite the same way. What you won't find:- detailed technical descriptions of what a data centre is- diagrams or schematics- a textbookIf you think you know everything about the cloud - and even if you've been in the industry for the past decades - Hu's book will almost certainly bring you some fresh perspectives. For that reason alone, I highly recommend it.

Gives a very technical history. Hard to follow at times

Intriguing book on the pre and present (and post?) history of the network.

If you like post-modernism and words like "otherness," "modalities," and "referential" then this book is for you. It shares a lot in common with a lot of other works in sociology and philosophy that assume that attempt to blur the differences that we perceive between things. For the more ordinary reader, there is not a lot to recommend about this book. I bought it after having read Tubes and hoped it would be to cloud computing what Tubes was for the internet. It's not; however, if you happen to purchase it by accident, or see it in the bookstore, it does contain a few facts (the first 10 pages or so tell us that SPRINT and Quest are defended from the Union Pacific Railroad).

This is not your regular IT book. It's a book about cloud technology, written by an author who also writes poetry. It presents an original view of technology and the history of communication media. The style is more metaphorical and associative than "straight to the point". But this "otherness" makes it a very relaxed and refreshing read.It is much more structured and comprehensible than Kittler, but it has some of the flavour. It feels like "Imperial" by William Vollmann. If you like Thomas Pynchon you will like this book.

If I could organize a book burning, this would be the book I'd choose to burn.

This book was a great read. For those who aren't familiar, it is the story of Derek Sanderson, who broke into the NHL playing center for the Boston Bruins. In his first season he won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. In the next 6 years he became a Stanley Cup winner with the Bruins twice. Along the way he developed a flamboyant image that had him hanging around with guys like football quarterback Joe Namath, and baseball star Ken Harrelson, all while living a life that most of the rest of us could only dream about. His ascension peaked, when in 1974 he became the highest paid athlete in the world when he signed a $2.65 Million dollar contract to play for the Philadelphia Blazers of the newly formed World Hockey Association. This book describes the way up, and the way down, as he descended into the hell of alcoholism and and drug addiction and chronicles how he went from being the highest paid athlete in the world, to sleeping in a refrigerator box in Central Park in New York and panhandling, and eating out of dumpsters, and then his recovery and his new life as a sportscaster, and financial planner. It is a very riveting read, and was difficult to put down.

Was my favorite NHL player as a boy. Sort of the NHL's Joe Namath. His rise and fall, his talent and "tough guy" persona, his insight on Orr, Esposito, Cheevers, Green, and others was interesting reading. Actually saw him play a little bit for the Oklahoma City Blazers, the Bruins Farm Club that won back to back Adams Cups in the 60's. Evidence that we're all our own worst enemies, and that only we can save ourselves.

A very humble and sincere reflection from a highly charismatic and controversial athlete.Growing up in NYC and becoming an NHL fan around the time he entered professional hockey, he and his big bad Bruins certainly added a dimension to the sport, the likes of what had previously not have existed. While there is credibility to the belief the team's brawling style led to the ugliness of the mid seventies brawling Flyers, their overall talent and flair with the puck led by the revolutionary defensive style of Bobby Orr and record breaking goal scoring by Phil Esposito really opened up the game.I attended the game in NYC mentioned in the book where Sa

For someone who grew up in the Boston area watching a hockey team with Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito on it, this had to be a must-read for me. And even though I suspected I would read a lot of what I already knew about those Boston Bruins, I was completely surprised about what I found out about Derek Sanderson. That's what makes this book a five star - the reveaing under-belly of the professional hockey player, especially 50 years ago coupled with the remarkable life of Derek Sanderson. I knew Sanderson as a great defensive player who never lost a face-off or shied away from a fight. When I followed the Bruins, it seems Sanderson was in the penalty box more often than he was on the ice. While the hockey background is interesting to any sport fan, Sanderson's life away from the ice rink is just as interesting. Without spoiling the book for the reader, suffice to say the path downward and the climb back out of the darkest depths he traveled will keep the reader's attention. The bumps along the road during these travels will keep most readers up late at night. This is a fun read for anyone interested in what can happen when drugs and alcohol become master. It's a must read for a sports fan of the old Boston Bruins of the Bobby Orr era.

I was a fan of Derek's during the 70's sitting in the stands at the Boston Garden so many years ago watching him play the game he was born to play. This is a heart wrenching story of success then failure which is followed by redemption. I have never had an addiction problem but I do have a close family member who is struggling and this story definitely helped me understand her illness much better. I think this book should be a required read in High School. It may help save a young life from starting a road to ruin. Not all will be as lucky as Derek. By the Grace of God Derek is not sitting in a jail cell right now. He was born to play hockey for sure but I believe he was also born to write this book to help others. God Bless you and your family Derek and Thanks for the Memories! I was an avid female fan of yours who desperately wanted to name her son Derek in 1973 but was voted down in favor of his Dad's name. When I see a man named Derek my son's age I know exactly where he got his name. Thanks for the behind the scenes stories that took place in hockey back then. I remember most of the fights you wrote about and all the players you skated with or against. Just a GREAT READ all around!

Growing up in the Boston area in the late 60's, Derek and the Big Bad Bruins were the toast of the town. In this auotbiography you see an unvarnished picture of the rise and fall of Derek Sanderson from the highest paid athlete to sleeping as a bum in Central Park. Every kid should read this honest look at a fast life that was turned around. This is not great prose but it is honest and real and impactful. A few mentions in the book are a bit hard to believe and not fully explored (a childhood friedn who shows up at his darkest moments and then disappears with no explanation?).Overall, if you love hockey or followed the Bruins this is a great read. Bobby Orr is portayed as a God on the ice and a saint off it. And the stories of what hockey used to be like (smoking in the locker room, 6 teams in the league, no helmets etc) is fascinating.Hockey, blood, fighting, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and then redemption. What's not to like?

This book is fantastic. When you are a 5 year old watching your heroes win the Stanley Cup, the grownups don't really fill you in on all the details of their personal lives. Mr. Sanderson doesn't leave anything out. Setting himself on fire, almost leaping to his death, sleeping on a bench while homeless in Central Park, all because of alcohol. His story of his rise and fall and redemption is incredible. I have given away copies of the book just because I liked it so much. The best autobiography I have ever read.

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—The first installment in a steampunk trilogy by a debut author focuses on the power of clocks. In an alternative Victorian London, time is kept in check by clock towers that were put in place so long ago that their origins have become part of mythology. Seventeen-year-old Danny is a mechanic tasked with keeping the clocks running smoothly to prevent time from fracturing or being stopped. Having time stop has been Danny's biggest fear ever since his father became trapped in a stopped town. The teen is assigned to a clock tower that keeps breaking down where he meets a strange and attractive young man claiming to be his new assistant. As Danny falls in love for the first time, he realizes that love can make people selfish or selfless, and he must decide between the two. In the book, homosexuality is no longer illegal but still weighs heavily on Danny's mind and plays into his other insecurities as the youngest mechanic on record. Part mystery and part romance, this fantasy novel delves into what it means to grow up and make important decisions. With an easily relatable main character struggling to fit in, the novel has a realistic and contemplative voice. Several chapters focus on the world's mythology, providing a secret history of the domain the characters inhabit. VERDICT A must-have richly written fantasy novel that will have readers eagerly anticipating the next volume. For fans of Cassandra Clare's "The Infernal Devices" or more mature works like V.E. Schwab's "Shades of Magic" series.—Rebecca Greer, Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, FL

I didn’t really know what to expect when I started Timekeeper by Tara Sim. The book has gotten a lot of hype leading up to the release, but I didn’t really know what the book was about. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I enjoyed this book a lot.The book is set in Victorian England where life in cities around the world are controlled by clock towers. The concept of Stopped time, where a city with a damaged clock tower could remain trapped within the same time forever, reminds me a little of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Where in Miss Peregrine’s, the people repeat the same day over and over, the townspeople in Timekeeper can’t escape the moment that all time stopped. These people can’t escape the bubble of Stopped time they’ve been trapped under. Well, enter the main protagonist, Danny Hart, who is the youngest clock mechanic who hasn’t seen in father for three years because his clock mechanic father has been trapped inside a Stopped town.Prior to the start of the story in Timekeeper, Danny has undergone a stressful event and now fears working with clocks, but still wants find a way to save his father. He longs to be assigned to the clock tower that’s being built near the same area his father is currently trapped. However, the Lead, a man who oversees all the clock mechanics in London, decides to test the waters and assigns Danny to a relatively easier job first. He’s been assigned to Enfield where he meets a mysterious boy, Colton, the town’s clock spirit.Danny and Colton are seriously the cutest. Tara Sim manages to incorporate a light-hearted loving feel into the text that reminds me of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. You can’t help but love them and ship them practically from the first moment they meet. However, we soon learn that humans can’t just fall in love with a clock spirit and thus, it is sadly a forbidden love. The characters are wonderful and there’s a mystery sort of element to this story because there’s someone, or someones, who are planting bombs and destroying the clock towers. Now, there’s romance and mystery in this book and it’s fun trying to guess the perpetrator(s).Danny’s story is heartbreaking at times. He’s lonely and lost at the beginning of the book and his only friends are Cassie, a car mechanic, and Matthias, his father’s friend who was once a clock mechanic. He doesn’t see or speak much with his mother, and hasn’t since his father got trapped inside a Stopped town. All the dynamics between the characters have a lovely depth to them that makes them feel so real. Danny and his mother have some gut-wrenching moments, but I can also see where they’re coming from. The setting manages to incorporate Victorian England with a magical wisp of storytelling that brings the story to life. The clock towers are the literal force that keeps the world running. Without them, the world would go into chaos with time skipping, stopping, or any other number of things that could go wrong. This is such a fascinating concept to me, and I loved reading this book’s take on this. I also love Danny and Colton’s story not just as a love story, but the fact that it’s so nice to have a story set in 1875 and have LGBTQ characters be happy and, for the most part, accepted by their peers. There’s an endless amount of time jokes in Timekeeper and I find them corny, but absolutely hilarious. It adds some light-hearted levity to the very serious nature that there’s the clock towers are being bombed, and could result in Stopping the towns.I really enjoyed Timekeeper. There’s nothing about this book that would suggest this is Tara Sim’s debut novel, because it’s just so well done. There’s so many quotable parts and the ending most certainly took me by surprise. I can’t wait to read the next book to find out what happens next to Danny! There comes a moment when time seems to slip faster, running long then short, shadows shrinking as the sun climbs. It’s the moment, he decided, when you’re no longer a child. When the concept of time and the need for more of it come together and make you powerless. Make you yearn for the longer days, the lazy days, before you knew what time passing actually meant.***Thanks to Skyhorse Publishing for providing me an ARC through NetGalley***

This review was originally posted at the Goldilox and the Three Weres blog.Have you ever read a book that you loved so much that you can't articulate why you love it when asked? Tara Sim's debut book, Timekeeper, was one of those books for me. I adore it so much! But I haven't been able to write a review for it since I first read it in November of last year no matter how hard I've tried. I've even reread it via the audiobook and I still can't coherently explain my love for it. But I can give you five reasons why you should pick it up.1. The MythologyI adored this world ruled by clocks and clock towers! I found the mythology that hinted at the origin of the clock towers fascinating! The story of the old gods was perfectly intertwined with the "present day" narrative of the characters. Not all of my questions were answered in this book and I need the next ones in my hands. I can't wait to learn more about the towers and the clock spirits.2. The RomanceI'm not going to say much about the romance between Danny and Colton other than it was absolutely adorable! I was totally shipping them by their third meeting with each other. I would recommend this book for the romance alone.3. The Representation of Grief, Loss, Trauma and PTSDThe characters in this book have not had easy times and some of them have been through multiple traumas. "I was in an accident. I got out. I'm safe now."From the first time Danny said his mantra to keep himself from breaking down, I actually gasped. I knew this was something important because I *knew* what was happening here. I knew what had to have happened to him.Sometimes you don't get out. Sometimes you do and that's only the beginning. It's going to be hard. Even years later, you might not feel safe. Sometimes trauma means you live with the scars. Sometimes you deal with them in ways that damage yourself or others. But reading books like this, that show such trauma and healing (even slow, disjointed, and derailed) with rawness and honesty... it helps. Danny, his mother, Matthias, and his best friend, Cassie, have all been through horrible things and they all responded in different and exceedingly realistic ways. People respond to trauma differently and all of those responses are valid. It was so nice to see these topics handled so well.4. Danny and Cassie's FriendshipOne of my favorite things about this book was Danny and Cassie's friendship. Their friendship was everything! They cared for each other and you can tell that they will have each other's backs no matter what. I loved their interactions so much! It was also refreshing to see a friendship between a guy and a girl that was free from romantic pining. I seriously want to see more of these kinds of friendships in YA.5. The Family InteractionsDanny's family isn't perfect. In fact, they are about as far from from perfect as you can get. They're drowning in grief and stressed out about finances and that colors their interactions. But I loved that so much of this book was focused on Danny's interactions with his mom, his worry about his dad, and the comfort he drew from his godfather. There was also themes of found family throughout the book and it was glorious. I love this recent trend in YA where the main character's family is actually present and accounted for in their life even if they don't know how to interact with each other like Danny and his mother. This book blew my mind! It was a breath of fresh air in the world of YA books and I can't help but sing its praises. I loved this world of clock mechanics and clock spirits and I ship the romance so hard! Also, the audiobook narrator was absolutely fantastic if audiobooks are your thing. I seriously can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series. Tara Sim has earned herself a permanent spot on my autobuy list.

Restricted Access: Media, Disability, and the Politics of Participation (Postmillennial Pop), by Elizabeth Ellcessor

Review

“Ellcessor calls for cultural collaboration that does not exclude disability culture or attempt to erase disability culture in the name of universal design.”-Choice"Restricted Access transforms our understanding of what 'access' means in an age when so much writing on new media fetishizes participation. Elizabeth Ellcessor reveals the ways in which ability, culture, and technology are all entangled in questions of accessibility. Timely and sophisticated, Ellcessor’s book is a major advance in media studies and disability studies, and will also be of great interest to scholars in policy."-Jonathan Sterne, author of MP3: The Meaning of a Format

Though it is older, published in 2007, this book has very good guidelines and exercises. Many of the art books I have bought are just filled with pretty pictures and the "same ole, same ole" as told by most artists. For me, the explanations in this book were clear and I find myself putting sticky notes in sections for future reference. Also I have made it readily accessible, unlike others that I put away on my bookshelf and forget about. That tells me this is one of the few art books that work for me. Everyone learns differently so you may have to review on-line before purchasing.

I was really looking for a lot of info on people but found a lot more filler of info that has nothing to do with that. Disappointed.

I needed some help in drawing people and putting them in my sketches. Someone in an art group I belong to said it is a great book so I decided to buy it. I like it very much and I am learning new techniques from it.

Incredibly useful reference book! I have learned a lot from it.

The book is classic Laurel Hart. I've watched her youtube demos and the book captures all of the great information she shares on the videos. A good buy for intermediate watercolorists.

Great book with beautiful photos and expert instruction. Love this book and will be learning a lot this coming winter.

Watercoloring people can be quite the challenge!! I ordered this book from Amazon hoping to get better at the 'people thing'...and I am doing better thanks to the examples and illustrations shown in this book. I love the colors and suggested people rather than hard lines and details. YOu will like this book and learn tremendously if you are having the challenge of the 'people thing'. Putting People in Your Paintings

I am enjoying this book. It has good, well written descriptions of everything from sketching, basic figure proportions, value studies, color mixing, on location painting, people in landscapes, basic design, light and shadow and more.I am very glad I bought this book. I like that she shows capturing the essence of people and not photo realism. Fun book to read and study. Lots of visual and not overrun with text.

For $11, I suppose I shouldn’t have expected much. But even the used books at the university have higher standards for books. It came completely ragged, with pink highlighting throughout. The highlighting is what’s actually obnoxious. I don’t care about the physical outside, but highlighting is distracting and useless. Universities will not re-sell books which have highlighting. This one sucked with it in it. But I need the book, and am forcing myself to make due.

I needed this for my evolutionary anthropology class and it's not written like a stuffy thick boring textbook. The author gets right to the point so you are not learning unnecessary stuff. I appreciate the pictures as well, I am a big picture person and remember better when pictures are shone. The pictures all make sense and are not confusing. I usually do not read my textbooks but I read this one for sure because of how interesting and well written it was.

Excellent book. It presents human evolution in a modern and unbiased manner. I always loved anthropology and am even more enamored after going through this book.

perfect

good rental and good book

It's a good book overall. They have a website that goes right along with the book. I probably will keep it as reference. I liked it.

I got this for my bio anth class and love all the quality information. It presents info clearly and concisely. I plan to read it again at a later date.

I purchased this book for a class as it was required.Much cheaper than buying it in the local school bookstore.
