I really enjoy this written literature.

This is an essential book for teaching film history, and the 4th edition includes nicely improved graphics, more information on the digital revolution, and other perks. But for women and other groups marginalized the in the industry, this book is 40 years out of date. One example: in the breakout section on Silent Comedy, the authors - of course - highlight Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy, and also take pains to mention Harry Langdon, Chester Conklin, Charley Chase and Max Swain. But there is not ONE WORD about Mabel Normand, who directed many of her own films and directed Chaplin before he WAS Chaplin. She also showed him the ropes on directing, when he was a newcomer to Max Sennett's studio. This is an egregious omission, but indicative of the book's subtextual misogyny, and general white male centered approach to anything dealing with marginalized groups. Perhaps future editions could include breakout sections on groups whose contribution to film history is vastly more extensive and unreported than Thompson / Bordwell have ever indicated.

This is a wonderful book. It's a book about other books, in this case books which depict the end of the present world as outlined in the biblical book of Revelation. It was inspired by the success of the Jenkins/LaHaye "Left Behind" series of novels.Price begins by examining the origins of such literature in the tragedies of Jewish history after the various Assyrian, Babylonian, and Seleucid conquests. From here he takes a closer look at the features of such literature that are familiar to us and loom large in the current novels - the Antichrist, the Beast, the Second Coming, the Rapture, etc. In particular, he points out that Revelation was a document written for its own time, predicting events that were supposed to happen soon and not at some indeterminate future time. Throughout he argues that LaHaye (and fundamentalists generally) have gotten it all wrong. All this takes us about halfway through the book.Then Price begins a review of apocalyptic novels proper. He distinguishes between novels intended to evangelize and novels merely intended to entertain. As he puts it "The born-again writers were trying to scare you out of hell; these authors are only trying to scare the hell out of you." The reviews are on several levels. Price gives his opinion on how well written they are, how believably they handle the various fantastic events which must occur, how they deal with the moral ambiguities such novels invariably wade into, and also how original they are. Price is clearly a fan of this genre.The Left Behind series gets its own chapter but it is used throughout the book as sort of a standard that other books are held to and of fundamentalist positions in general. He is particularly hard on Jenkins' and LaHaye's anti-intellectualism.Throughout his reviews Price comes off as somewhat caustic but not excessively so. He seems to be trying hard to be fair.There is a nice bit of unintended (I think) humor in the book. Price once uses the expression "Jack Squat" in the text. Sure enough, the computer program that indexed the book has an entry for "Squat, Jack"!Nonbelievers will love this book. Believers will be less pleased, of course, but there is still value for them in the book - seeing the genre through other eyes. Recommended for all but those who just can't stand cherished beliefs criticized.

Paperback Apocalypse / 978-1-59102-583-2I would have bought "Paperback Apocalypse" anyway, just because I'm a huge fan of Robert Price, but I have a secondary interest in the "Left Behind" phenomena courtesy of Fred Clark's Slactivist "Left Behind" writings, where he deconstructs the genre literally a page at a time. And while I realize that Price could never have come close to that level of detail in a slim paperback volume, I still expected so much more.In the opening pages of "Paperback Apocalypse", Price admits to being a devoted fan of apocalyptic fiction, and perhaps therein lies the root of the problem. The layout of this book is poor; the tone flits between highly conversational and deeply scholarly and seems somewhat uncomfortable with either approach.With regards to the layout: Price starts initially with Messianic prophecy, rather than apocalyptic (i.e. 'end times') prophecy. This is not a bad topic for consideration, but it is jarring when the purported focus of this book is end times prophecy and the "Left Behind" phenomena. Indeed, much of the Messianic prophecy here probably could and should have been part of a separate novel, rather than this one. When Price does get to end time prophecy, he chooses to deal with Biblical prophecy first, then provide summaries of various "Left Behind"-esque fictional works, and then provide a final, more in-depth summary of the actual "Left Behind" writings of LaHaye and Jenkins. This last bit is, for all intents and purposes, the last chapter in the book, which feels jarring. To my mind, a better layout would have been to outline "Left Behind" first, tie in other similar works of fiction, and *then* carefully dissect where the information is supposedly located in the Bible and why those passages are interpreted differently by Price.As for the tone: The opening chapters dealing with Messianic prophecy and end times prophecy are, for the most part, deeply scholarly, whereas the later "summarize every end times book and movie" chapters are extremely conversational - but not in a good way. Price cannot seem to decide how harsh he wants to appear with regards to the LaHaye/Jenkins books - he repeatedly reassures us that Jenkins is a very skilled writer (a contention that I, personally, disagree with), and that the Narm moments in the series occur not because of bad writing but because of bad theology. However, I think it is foolish to assume that all the bad elements of "Left Behind" are rooted in bad theology and not bad writing - after all, if you have Strawman Jews filling your novel in order to serve your theological purposes, you are not free from the charge of bad writing: why couldn't Jenkins write *better* Jews instead of silly strawmen ones? And so forth.Random asides from Price (such as the odd revelation that he wants to alter "Real Men Love Jesus" bumper stickers to read "Real Sissies Love Jesus") undermine the scholarly tone and approach; and the blatant summaries of books and movies rather than actually dealing directly with the theology within seem to undermine the point of the book. Is this a scholarly approach, or a movie guide written by a fan of the genre?I hate to criticize Price. I think there's a great deal of value to this book, and a lot of interesting information here - either for people interested in learning about the various "Left Behind" precursors available in the popular media, or for people interested in Messianic prophecy and the roots and reasons behind apocalyptic prophecy. However, the overall marketing of this book - that it illustrates "how the Christian Church was Left Behind" was, in light of all this, a poor move on the editor's part - seemingly an effort to cash in on the many books examining the "Left Behind" phenomena. If that's all your interested, there are better books out there that deal with the subject.~ Ana Mardoll

This book won't be read by the people who need to read it. It will be read by those who really don't need to read it. Price is mostly preaching to the choir. Having said that, this is entertaining reading. Price has an axe to gring with the Christian faith and he does that with great effect here. I wish he had been a little more objective. But it wouldn't have been nearly so much fun to read if that were the case. Price uses reverse apologetics in trying to prove the negative. As a Christian, I readliy admit the Bible has its problems and Price is very effective at homing in on those problems and exploring them in great detail. I find his writing challenging, informative and entertaining all at the same time. What more could you ask from an author? I even learned a new word! Verisimilitude seems to be a favortie of Mr. Price. Get used to it. You will see it a lot here. I highly recommend this book to every reader. It will encourage the non believer, challenge and inform the open minded believer, and infuriate fundamentalists.

Price's writing takes some getting used to - in some ways it is tongue-in-cheek and in other ways it's right on - he uses lots of scripture quotes and passages to make his various points and I almost find myself having to go to a bible to see what is around his quotes - I'm a recovering Catholic and for years have read and continue to read books on the history of Christianity and religious belief in general - having become a skeptic/agnostic (call it what you will) I am truly amazed that so much of the truth about the history of how/what and why we believe has been hidden for so many years

Even though this book is required for a class I am taking, I was reluctant to purchase it based on the reviews saying the product is not as advertised. I agree that the description is unclear, but I purchased the paperback & 3 CD set directly from Amazon, and the product arrived in new condition with all three working CDs. I can't say whether other versions (the Kindle edition, hardcover, copies from third-party sellers) would arrive with the music needed. At $73.27, it's not the worst price I've had to pay for a physical textbook (with CDs) by far. Just make sure that the version you are purchasing will have everything you need and you know how to access the audio content, CD or mp3, before you decide.As for the content, it seems to be a pretty standard textbook. I skimmed through sections (my class hasn't started yet), and it seems to have good information. I'm posting my review now, before I've really used the book, to make it clear that it is possible to purchase a version with the music you will probably need for a class.UPDATE May 2014:Now that I have finished my class I have changed my rating from 4 to 3 stars. While the book contains a lot of good, accurate information, it is somewhat poorly organized, and at times I found it confusing to read. I also noticed several editing errors that were not just typos but content problems. The worst error I found was a chapter review question that referenced a paragraph that had been removed from this edition (which made doing my homework pretty difficult). I'm still giving it three stars because I felt I learned a lot, but at times this book takes some extra effort to fully understand it.

I payed a little extra to get this "Like New" book instead of a few cheaper ones, but when I came the pages were dirty on the outside, there was some writing inside, and worst of all the cover was bent all over the place. I was pretty disappointed and the bent cover bothers me every time I read it. Didn't have time to return and order a different book since I needed it for school, so now I'm stuck with it. This seller has a few reviews where the condition did not match the stated condition--I'd go with someone else.

This is a great text. I am using it to teach a World Music class and it has a lot of information and examples.Many people rated this low becuase they said it did not come with the Mp3. That is not the case. At the end of the table of contents is says to email AcademiceBooksSupport@informa.com with proof of purchasing the eBook (I just forwarded my email from Amazon) and they email you back with a code. After you have that code it is a simple process and you have access to the Mp3.

If you read in the beginning of the book after the table of contents it tells you to send an email to AcademiceBooksSupport@informa.com with proof of purchase in order to access the MP3 files. My email was returned within 24 hours with a link and access code to a site to download the music files for all 3 CD's. How to complain when the CD's cost $40 and the book upwards of $50 but renting the book and getting the MP3's for $14. Win-win.

This book came from apex media. The book is in terrible shape and more importantly the cd's are so abused some of the tracks will not play. that makes the entire product worthless. It is actually less than worthless because now school has started and I can not complete my assignments and this is an online class so I am on my own. There is no excuse for poorly ran businesses or outright fraud. I hope no one buys from Apex media and they go out of business.

The book is pretty good and I found it to be a pretty good companion for learning beyond the world music class that I took. I will be keeping this book for reference in the future.The CD's...that was another issue. They had superficial scratches all over them and during some of the audio tracks would skip or there would be digital noise indicative of scratches on the CD surface.I contacted the publisher and insisted that they be replaced due to faulty packaging. There were 2 other students in my class that had issues with disc damage due to packaging as well. After a short rebuttal, they replaced them but don't count on it being replaced within the time that you need them. Go to your college library and rip them real quick (no harm, you already paid for them) the text and discs should be on reserve. Some might find it quicker or more efficient to go through Amazon with a replacement since they are selling the product that has known packaging issues.There is some pretty good music on the discs if you are into anything other than pop-crap.

I just downloaded this book. It has a terrific range of words, BUT is NOT searchable, nor does it have a detailed contents page at the beginning which would make it easier to use without a search function. The lack of either of these features, greatly effects the book's appeal as an ebook. When and if these features are added, it will be an excellent resource.

I have always trusted Roget's and this is no different. When I want to sound superior, I just pop open the book and voila! Before me is a cool-ection of words ready for our next keffeeklatsch. Or Facebook.My only complaint is that the listing is a bit restricted. And not nearly as easy to use. So bad it's great and so great it's silly and so silly it's not always great...In other words, you'll find some wonderful material mixed in with the dumbest jokes ever, next to the mediocre, placed with the worst, and then some tremendous stuff.Don't worry, it's more than worth it! It's like Henny Youngman and Milton Berle crashed their golf carts and they told 5,000 jokes on the way to the 19th hole -- you might not laugh at all of them, but you don't want to miss any of them just in case...

People may have thought these jokes were funny once, but too many are offensive by modern standards for use with kids, for example. Some are still funny, but best to use another book.

I was hoping to purchase a book of clean humor for an upcoming event. This was definitely not it.

Maybe I don’t have the sense of humor to get the jokes?!

Most of the humor in this book is created. There are some old jokes that are thrown in to, but for the most part this appears to be new humor. Subtract one star for the off-color jokes.

Kendall Zoller is president of Sierra Training Associates and provides professional learning seminars and keynotes on facilitation and presentation skills and leadership to schools, districts, universities, state agencies, and corporations throughout North America. I learned many new ideas for quality presentations. I especially enjoyed the tips on recovering when things went wrong and the tips on erasing a poor memory simply by changing positions.

This book gives a series of simple yet highly effective aspects required for leading a successful meeting or presentation. The concepts when practiced and put together create a much more productive and receptive environment for meetings and presentations. Some of the ideas may seem difficult to practice, like controlled breathing, but if one focuses on each element and practices it, they will become much more credible presenters.
