A good introduction as well as controversial (I suspect). Bronkhorst is a big name in Indology and as such seems to have been asked to write an introduction to karma in Asian spirituality (mostly India). The result is a book that lives in both worlds: it's easily accessible, with vignets explaining terminology and context. On the other hand, every once in a while, I'm seems he expresses controversial opinions as facts.Personally, as former university student of Indian Religion and History, I missed footnotes. Not that there aren't any, but I do wonder whether the editors edited some out because this book is aimed at a more general audience.Still, I'd definitely recommend this book as a reference and overview as well as an introduction for the general reader interested in Indian spirituality.

I strongly suggest anyone interested in yoga philosophy read this book. It is an accessible, thorough study from an author who clearly knows the material. Although yoga philosophy is rarely referenced, the understanding of karma and its unfolding into the world (prakrti) is essential for an appreciation of Patanjali's Sutras. This book manages to do explain the different forms of karma in a clear and intelligent manner.EDITORIALThe interplay between the Buddha's understanding of karma and the Brahmins' reluctant acceptance is discussed very well by the author. It is this interplay (a Brahmin/Samkhya response to the Dharma of the Buddha) which I believe is the primary insight needed to appreciate Patanjali's teaching and a key to its hermetics.So a bit of a stretch by this reviewer, I admit, but an out-of-the-box recommendation to buy this book. Enjoy!

Read it twice. very thoughtful story of a young girl growing up in post-war America when Japanese Americans were not treated very well.

I didn't know that this book was intended for a younger audience when I purchased it. There was something about this book that drew me in, however. Without giving away the story, the author presents a well-written, often overlooked presentation of what it means to be Asian in American society. With themes of pride, family strife, and societal prejudice, this book was an enjoyable read with a beautiful ending.

Kadohata's book is an extraordinary contribution to young adult literature. The story is about a Japanese family trying to assimilate into American Society. Most of the book takes place in a small town in Georgia. There are only 36 Japanese people in the whole town. All of them work at the chicken hatchery.The book is narrated by a young girl of about 10 through 13. She tells innocently, yet with realization, the truths about the prejudice that she encounters, and that her family encounters. In the course of the tale, the deepest and most intimate feelings and concerns are expressed. The feelings of Katie, the protagonist with respect to her sister Lynnie are particularly precious. Lynnie had lymphoma and was slowly dying. Katie reacts to this mostly in a very good way. But occasionally, she slips in her own eyes in terms if her personal ethics and morality.While many books have been written about oppressed minorities, in America, we usually don't consider Orientals as an oppressed minority. Yet even in America today, we surely have plenty of xenophobia and prejudice. The story goes around and around in America; over and over and over again.This book is recommended for all those readers who wish to have a truly personal experience in terms of American integration. This book is a very fine offering.

Right off the top I want to say that you can never really go wrong with a Newbery Award winner. I've read nearly all of them and I've never been disappointed, even as I head into the second half of my fourth decade. Any book that's good enough for your children should be good enough for you too.That being said, this is not one of my favorites among the Newbery's. Kadohata is excellent at convincingly telling this story from the point of view of a young child and this story of Japanese-Americans struggling to get by in the deep South with a very ill child is a good one; however, I felt very much like I knew where this story was going and I occasionally felt my emotions were being manipulated by the author. I wept the required tears but I didn't feel satisfied.Still, I'm fond of the occasional tear-jerker and, if you are too, then this book is a good place to go.

This book is is one of the greatest books of all time. It almost made me cry (I almost never cry) it describes the hardships of working to pay off bills and how fast your life can go downhill I love this book it is now a fav

What an amazing piece of children's literature! I highly recommend it for all ages of people! There are some sad events in the book, but that's what makes it so amazing!

This was a great book and I would definitely recommend it to everyone who likes to read about how families over come tragedies throughout their lives.

I absolutely love Banh Mi, so I was happy to find this recipe book! The “Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich Guide” by Nancy Nguyen is a good dive into the many wonderful variations you can make for this famous kind of Vietnamese sandwich. The author does a good job of explaining each aspect of the dish and the separate ingredients. The recipes themselves are written in a clear way that is easy to follow. I think the formatting of the chapters and type could be done a little more efficiently, but I do like the chapter that is organized by section based on the type of meat that the recipe uses. I also like the cover and photos but wish that there was a photo with each new type of sandwich. Overall, I enjoy how much detail the author goes into about this dish. It is evident that they have a great appreciation and understanding of this food. I cannot wait to try making my own Banh Mi!

I'm not going to go into the specifics of the book - read the other reviews (they are accurate). What I can say is it's the best book to travel with out there (all the Eyewitness Travel Guides - I have 13 books). When we travel (we lived in Europe for 3 years, so we traveled to many countries), we always picked up one of these books. For the person that gave this book a bad review - buy a good map. This book is jam packed with information, but not one book is 100% perfect to your specific trip. During our tip to RSA we did a lot traveling by car all over the country, so we needed a good road map. Didn't expect it to be in the book - use your head! You should buy the book and look through it before your tip and find out what else you need to make a good trip, but you should be 90-95% covered. This was one of several books we bought for a trip to South Africa. The book itself is beautiful-good photos, concise descriptions, good background and is itself a keepsake of the trip. It provided some good background and historical information about the different areas of the country and what to expect, but it is not the kind of book that will tell you all you need to know about where to stay, what time the trains run, etc. It is a great start to get excited about where you're going, but should only be considered as an adjunct to another book (like Frommers or Lonely Planet) that provides all the nuts and bolts information you actually need to travel there. If you have both, you're in great shape, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it ahead of time.

Unfortunately, this edition didn't help us much on our trip to South Africa. There are some good maps and bits of information, but it's pretty out-of-date otherwise. It didn't even list most of the things we found on the internet, that wanted to do in Johannesburg. It didn't even have a listing for the Wildlife Reserve we went to, either. It may be a good book to have for reference or in a pinch to find a hotel or something standard, but if I had it to do again, I'd go with something much more up-to-date.

The Eyewitness Travel products are excellent and I have used them in Costa Rica, Paris, and Japan. Recently I was on a short trip to South Africa and used the guides in Johannesburg/Pretoria and in Cape Town. Again, I found the guide to be excellent and very helpful. Because of the large number of beautiful color photographs in the guide, it certainly is a good keepsake. South Africa is an enormous country and the guide tries to cover all the major geographic regions.The history of South Africa is fascinating and the more you learn before you go, the more sense you will be able to make of the institutions. Cape Town was originally a stopping off point for Dutch traders on their way to Dutch colonies in Indonesia, however many of the Dutch decided to stay in Cape Town due to its pleasing climate and beauty as well as the fact that vineyards could be established in this part of Africa. French protestant Huguenots also moved to Cape Town to escape persecution in France, and they also contributed to the vineyard culture of the region. However native peoples were pushed northward and eastward as more Europeans arrived. The Ndebele people were displaced as pioneers moved north and the Xhosa people were displaced as the pioneers moved further east. This trend was increased several fold when the British began arriving and challenging the Dutch. These Boer farming families pushed further east in the great Voortrekker movement of the 1830's, displacing many native peoples, yet the British continued to push their authority into Boer areas. The stakes were dramatically increased with the discovery of gold and diamonds in South Africa, tensions increased which erupted in the South African Boer War of 1899-1902. The character of Cecil Rhodes greatly influenced this period as expansion into Zulu, Botswana, Namibia, and Lesotho increased in the search for diamonds and gold. To maintain control of such a vast land mass with a broad range of native communities, the Boer and English forces together imposed Apartheid on the people to separate, as much as possible, Europeans from indigenous people. This system was upheld through highly repressive techniques. Only in 1990 were the Apartheid laws overturned and the democratic process begun for the vast number of South Africans. The release of Nelson Mandela from a political prison in 1990 and his subsequent election as the new State President in 1994 are stunning historic events with which every visitor to South Africa should be familiar before planning a trip.We stayed at a guest house in Pretoria in the same neighborhood with the Embassies and large historic homes. We found the neighborhood to be full of Victorian homes or large Dutch manor homes and we were within walking distance of the University of Pretoria campus. On the campus there is a pizza pub with outdoor seating. I noticed that for the most part, students grouped themselves according to race with only a few mixed race groups sitting together in the pub. There was extensive security precautions around these embassies and large homes including high fences topped with barbed and electric wire. There were also security cameras, gated driveways, and watch dogs. We visited the University of Witwatersrand where I observed large numbers of African and European students in the main student cafeteria, most often eating with persons of similar racial background but there were some groups that included East Asian, African, and European young people. While in Pretoria, we visited the impressive Union Building and surrounding park. In the distance we could see the Voortrekker Monument on the hilltop.The section on Cape Town is very detailed and helpful. When we flew into Cape Town, our taxi driver proudly pointed out Groote Schuur Hospital where he first successful heart transplant took place in 1967. We made our way past the V&A waterfront to the Ramada which was located directly on the ocean looking out on Robben Island.On the V&A waterfront in Cape Town there were numerous African choirs of young singers, older women singers, and older men singers. The shopping here is international with many of the same shops that are seen in Barcelona or Los Angeles. However there were some shops with African crafts that were well worth visiting. I especially liked the beautiful hand-embroidered Shangaan Textiles with their bright colors and bold images. We had business in downtown Cape Town and thus drove past Long Street with its nightclubs and walked down St. George's Mall where we ate at an outstanding restaurant housed in an old bank building. We visited the outdoor markets in front of the imposing City Hall building. We also drove through Muslim neighborhoods with brightly painted homes.We saw the three major tourist sites, Cape Point, Robben Island, and Table Mountain. We tried to go from Cape Town to Cape Point and back in 4 hours. This was not wise. We took 5 hours and still felt that we could have stopped several times to see more of the cape on the way down to Cape Point. We drove through some of the wine country and saw beautiful charming Cape Dutch architecture. The twisting mountain roads over the water are as spectacular as Big Sur in California or the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy. On the way to the Cape Point, we stopped at and saw a beautiful little harbor at Hout Bay with Cape minstrels meeting and greeting the tour boats as they return to the harbor. Cape Point is not actually the southern most point of Africa but the views were spectacular from the point. Cape Agulhas is actually the southern most point of the African continent. At the Point, baboons can be seen, as well as Bonteboks and ostriches.We caught the ferry to Robben Island at the historic Victorian clock tower on the V&A waterfront. This is a spectacular excursion. The ferry takes you to Robben Island where you take a tour of the political prisons and the island. You will see the cell where Nelson Mandela was held as well as Anglican churches built for the use of the lepers who were sent to Robben Island before it became a prison island. We were lucky in that the clouds were not covering either the mountain or the city or the coastlines which gave us spectacular views of the entire area.South Africa has only recently moved beyond Apartheid and there is racial tension at times when visiting South Africa. Only once in our week in South Africa was their any open confrontation which occurred one evening when our party was driving to a restaurant and a young woman screamed at our passing car that she was tired of seeing `white faces'. There is a crime problem and thus walking around alone or at night is not advised. However, crime has multiple causes including resource allocation, social norms, and criminal justice infrastructure.We were warned that the baggage handlers in the Johannesburg airport are notorious for going through luggage and stealing cameras and other electronic products. Unfortunately one person in our party was told by the attendant on a South African flight that only 2 items could be carried aboard the flight. She had a purse, briefcase, and gym bag and she was forced to check the gym bag planeside, however when we retrieved the bag at luggage claim her camera was gone. Therefore I would urge anyone flying into or out of Johannesburg to make sure all valuables are in your carry-on luggage and that if you are forced to check your carry-on, that you go through it quickly and remove anything of value. There are shrink wrap services that will shrink wrap you luggage for around $3.50 per bag, which is certainly well worth the price.If I return to South Africa for vacation I would probably focus on the Cape Winelands, the Southern Cape, and the Garden Route to Grahamstown. The sections of the book on these areas was very compelling and inviting. The guide was extremely useful.

This is a great book with some very useful information on the 9 stages of adjustment. However, I found it to be a bit outdated (it seems to have been most recently published in 1997). With the new technology (cell phones, smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc) that have come out since then- many of these areas need addressing such as snap chat, face time, Facebook and other social media. One section talks about using a phone card and LAN line (who does that anymore?).There is no real mention of online communication with family back home at all. I would love to see an updated version of this to include all the aforementioned items.

When I purchased this book, it was with the intention of giving it to my Host Families prior to their student's arrival. I expected it to have the students' 9 stages with suggestions on how to help them through each one. Well, the author does do that, but also prepares host parents for the probability that they will begin to rationalize their own culture!High school exchange students arrive loaded with questions about the American lifestyle, and it is their innocent yet intense questions that provoke us to recognize that almost every thing we do is based on our learned culture. The author prepares us to recognize our students' and our own strange reactions as ignorance of each others' cultures, not rudeness or even anger over simple things like refusing a special dessert.I have put this book on my "Must Read" list for prospective host families. Reading it can definitely prevent huge misunderstandings and enhance the experience for everyone involved in the adventure of a lifetime.Not only is it a "Must Read", I will also refer to it frequently during my Orientation Meetings with both Host Families and Exchange Students.

I am an exchange student coordinator for students that come from very different cultures from the United States. This book was somewhat helpful to me in discovering different ways to explain to families concepts such as "unspoken rules" or how to treat an exchange student within your household, as well as cultural differences. This book does help families understand their undetected cultural biases in a way that I haven't seen in other publications. Not all host families work out and I intend to use this book as a resource for families that are having challenges arranging to life with an exchange student. I have directly supervised 9 students over 1.5 years and indirectly with hundreds more.

I am a seasoned host mom as well as a new coordinator for an exchange organization. I read this book with the intention of giving it to new host families as a gift. I would agree with the reviewers who disliked this book. I am definately glad I never read this before hosting or I never would have tried it. While no host experience is perfect, they aren't nearly as negative or intimidating as this book leads you to believe, and yes we have had 2 horrible experiences. I also think they spend way too many pages on their time line....while every student adjusts differently I do not have students adjusting like they suggest 5-6 months after they arrive.

I read this book a month or so before our exchange student arrived and, although I didn't believe at the time that it had all the answers, I was not prepared for how utterly useless it was for our family. In contrast to the timeline given in the book, our student seemed to adjust quickly and well, then things got progressively worse as he became more and more comfortable in our home. He started out on his best behavior and ended up completely ignoring our house rules and the cultural norms of the school and community. I'm seriously considering writing my own book and calling it "The Alternative Host Family Survival Guide".

I have come to realize that I am not a huge mystery fan, and when I novel is categorized as such.. I am very picky as to which I like, and am harder on them rating wise then other genres. But this, this was incredible. It was twisted, disturbing, and you really never knew where the next page was going to take you. I got everything wrong, and that's exactly what I loved and hated, all at once. A MUST READ for any mystery readers.

Let me introduce you to the players aka The Burke family:Sterling Burke - The most prominent judge in Florida. He's such a charming man that he has everyone from the mayor to the governor in his back pocket. Nothing bad ever happens to Sterling and nothing ever will.Hollis Burke - Sterlings wife and mother to Charlotte and Mellie. She rules the house with an iron fist and spews vitriol to anyone that dare disagree with her. A loving mother she is not.Mellie Burke - Oldest daughter, mother of 18 yr old Trudy, she spends most of her days self medicating with alcohol while laying about her parents house.Charlotte Burke - Youngest daughter, mother to 5 year old Ruby, a shell of a woman really. Her fathers favorite and her mothers nemesis.It appears the Burkes like to keep their children close. Why else would two grown woman and their children still live at home? Clearly something is amiss.Then one day Ruby goes missing and soon her body is found on the beach. Detectives Alice Garner and Joe Nakamura are called in to investigate. What exactly goes on behind closed doors of the Burke mansion? It appears everyone has secrets."It was curious how so often people saw only the surface of one another. They filled in the blanks they didn't know or couldn't understand with preconceived notions that had no grounding in reality."The chapters alternate between "Before" and "After" where we get the perspectives of Alice, Charlotte, and Trudy. This was a little bit confusing at first but after a few chapters I was able to grasp the back and forth. While in the Alice chapters we find out in flashbacks that her own daughter was kidnapped and killed which is the driving force behind her solving this crime.I really enjoyed the banter between Detectives Garner and Nakamura. Garner is tough as nails after losing her daughter while Nakamura was the surprisingly kind and understanding older seasoned detective. They really seemed to have a deep connection even though they were complete opposites.My one complaint is that for some reason I never felt any real empathy for the Burke girls and I most certainly should have. It's a strange feeling when you read something like this but feel emotionally cut off from the characters.The book was a slow burn but an interesting one. The twist and the ending were a complete shock. Like, never in a million years would I have predicted this outcome. My second book by this author and I'm twice reduced to tears. Phenomenal author with great story telling capacity. Highly recommend. I can't wait for her next book. SHE IS GOOD

In so many ways. I made myself finish it. No likable characters, horribly drawn out and ridiculous ending. Spare yourself

Incredibly annoying reader (especially when she does the child’s voice); the writing is full of fluffy, forced adjectives and the story was predictable.

Fantastic. I was shifting my ideas of who was responsible until the very end. I love that the clues were subtle, really made me think. Very clever.

Very suspenseful...intriguing sequence of events and how the author handled the story development. Good character development.

You won't see the twists and turns coming. It's an entertaining nail biter with surprises page after page. A must read.
