"Forget Me Not" is the second book in the Catalina Cove Series and I found it to be interesting and solid all at the same time. I like Catalina Cove and all the beauty that Brenda Jackson described it to be. I would love to explore the town for myself; the way the author describes it, I can picture the businesses, the people, and the blueberry muffins constantly mentioned throughout the book. This book was great and I was like a lot of readers anticipating this book becoming available. I enjoyed reading about Ashley the most. The strength it took to try to move on from losing your husband and then finding out he was not dead, had got too difficult to comprehend and understand not having your man in your life. Ray aka Devon was an interesting character to say the least. If I am honest, I could not fully invest in him. He was more of a character I could not figure out. Who was he really? He seemed more well rounded as Devon than as Ray, being that Ray was more of someone he was given to be since he lost his memory. Devon needed an anchor and Ray was born. In my opinion, the women are the glue that is holding this series together. Vashti, Ashley, and hopefully Bryce are the balance that is keeping me interested in finishing the series out. Their stories so far are very fascinating to me. I was even hoping that Vashti's life would have ventured into this one, just to tie everything up since I did not feel like her story (book one) was concluded. The plot for Ray and Ashley was simpler in style. I thought there was going to be more drama, but it was not. Some readers probably would object to this. They did have a lot of sex that could have gotten dull and mediocre. I was fine with it since the author spaced it out going into details and not in certain sections. Overall, I liked this book and possibly could read Kaegan and Bryce's story. My only concern is this rift between them will it be something serious or just stupid, trivial drama? We shall see!

As always I enjoyed this book by Ms. Jackson. I have read all of her work and loved them (especially them Westmoreland men whew!!). Ashley and Devon/Ray demonstrated the epitome of black love. So glad they found their way back to each other. Sat on the edge of my seat waiting for Ray to put the pieces of his memory back together. My only concern with this book was there was a lot of repetition and it took longer than I would have liked to get to the heart of the matter. Yet, I am still a Brenda Jackson fan.

Ms Jackson has done it again. The Ray/Devon & Ashley story was so touching. Ashley found love again with her husband that she believed had died in a car accident. He had lost his memory and had no recollection of their love and marriage. Getting him to fall in love with her again was beautiful. This one is a must read. Thanks again Brenda Jackson for sharing your superb stories with your readers.

Once again the author has succeeded in bring the characters of Catalina Cove together to support each other through their good and bad times. I felt as the reader a part of their community.Looking forward to to sequel the

The love Ashley & Devon had for each other was so strong and real. I'm glad when she found him again even though he didn't know her their love became just as strong. The ending was just perfect. Brenda Jackson you did it again.

Another great by Brenda Jackson. I couldn't put it down. Ashley Ryan lost her love on!t to find him again 3 years later. This book was full of emotions and desire. I absolutely loved it.

What can I say. This story was excellent from the beginning to the end. It touched my heart in so many ways. This was true love at its finest. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

This was such a heartwarming story featuring the mysterious Ray Sullivan...for a wife who thought he was dead only to fall in love with him all over again !!! I was rooting so much for them to work through their struggles. I finished in a few hours, I wish it was longer! Can’t wait for Bryce’s book up next !

After reading this book, I went to Google to read up more on Achilles and Patroclus and all the other fascinating characters that came alive in this story. I couldn’t get enough. This story is so richly told with so much imagination and emotion, but I still wanted more, even after turning the last page.Of course Achilles is a great warrior with immortal strength and speed, but I didn’t know he was musical or had disguised himself as a girl to avoid the Trojan War. In this story, he becomes a multi-faceted person told through the eyes of his dearest companion Patroclus. His confidence defines him, his respect fot everyone is dignifying, his indifference to everyone’s adoration is amusing, and his attunement to Patroclus’s every thought and emotion is profoundly moving.Patroclus was a surprise as the story evolved. He’s no warrior in a society that values physical strength. He describes himself as weak, scrawny, and not at all articulate. He’s suppose to be a prince of a great king, but he’s content to live in Achilles’ shadow. I could scarcely hold my contempt. What could Achilles possibly see in him? But as the Trojan War drags on for ten long years, physical strength seems increasingly meaningless. And Patroclus’s compassion, his loyalty, his integrity, and his dignity really start to shine. Who’s the real hero in the Song of Achilles?

This book quickly and easily landed in my all time favorites list. The writing is just beautiful, descriptive and rich and nearly poetic. I enjoyed the story as well- as a mythology fan it was perfect. I am absolutely crazy about this book. If I ever get a chance to have the author sign this I will be thrilled- her writing was superb. I was sad when I finished reading this because I knew it would be some time before I was this moved again.

It's a free preview, which I appreciate, but in this instance it led me to decide against buying the book. I'd just finished Achilles (really the Patroclus and Achilles story, told from the former's POV) and found the voice in Circe too close to the Achilles voice. If they weren't both first person POV or if I hadn't read them so close together it might have worked better for me. Perhaps I'll try the full book again when it gets to my local library.

We get to meet a different but believable Odysseus in this novel, but that becomes secondary to the character of Circe, who was given a voice, a believable one, in this novel. Using Athena as a plot mover was a stretch though. The author could have used a number of devices that left Athena alone.

Literary Historical Fiction at its best. Can't wait to read more. Would like to see many more books from her to come, and planning on buying them soon as I am no longer broke! ;)

Excellent book so far, read the first couple of chapters in record time. If you love Greek mythology this is an easy captivating read.

This is a nicely written and very imaginative book. I enjoyed the vivid and colorfully descriptive language that came across diff and pacific.

I really liked the preview and I'm waiting patiently for the Kindle edition to go on sale.

Background: I've worked with GWT for 18 months. I also happen to work at Google - I say this not imply any kind of company endorsement - but just to give you an idea of the amount of GWT information I have access to.I have found this book really useful for getting to grips with some of the more cutting edge and esoteric features of GWT. It covers such things as superdev mode and generators - features that you'll find little information on elsewhere. Because of the book's size and depth it might be intimidating to a complete beginner, but the authors do provide plenty of worked examples to tinker with. In contrast to some other GWT books I've tried I also found this pretty readable.In summary, I'm a fairly seasoned GWT developer and I still found much to learn from this book. I wish I'd had it a year ago.

I started to learn about GWT for the first time about 6 months ago, and this was one of three GWT textbooks that I purchased (The others were GWT In Practice and Google Web Toolkit Applications).Overall, I used GWT In Action as a book to go to when GWT In Practice was a little harder to understand. GWT In Practice teaches GWT, but at a faster pace and using stronger software development techniques. When I needed to dive in deeper to a specific subject, GWT In Action was the perfect book.I found the explanations easy, straight to the point, and very thorough - something which wasn't quite the same in other textbooks. Whereas GWT In Action may not be an advanced textbook in creating commercial applications, it is a perfect intro book to get the core concepts learned thoroughly and well.The textbook is a little dated now, and the sample applications show it. However, as of the time of this review, most of the material is still perfectly relevant. There are some new features / objects available in GWT now that were not before, but all the old ones are still there. The textbook is not too outdated - it's still worth the purchase if you want a thorough coverage of the core GWT features.Simply put - an easy to understand, thorough book on GWT.

I ordered this book with the assumption that it would be a nice reference for obscure things I would like to do with GWT. Then I received it, and turns out this book is much more than that.This book covers things I've never used, and opens up a world of functionality that I had previously been unaware of. The biggest thing: RequestFactory is no longer a mystery to me.Another big plus: this book helped me clean up my MVP implementations. I had a little bit too much going on in my view layer previous to reading this book, and now, all cleaned up.I highly recommend this book to anyone who uses GWT even if you are an expert. It's well written with barely any errata. Well done!

Relatively incoherent and dated. The later is more the fault of the GWT developers than the authors; it's hard to hit a target that is moving that quickly.In general, I expect a book to present the development of a topic, and to define terms before using them.This book (which both seems to have been written by a committee and was written by a committee) freely references concepts that it not only hasn't defined first, but hasn't defined at all.GWT is changing quickly, and one of the frustrations of GWT documentation is that it's often out-of-date.

This book has been a great asset in learning to use GWT effectively for me. I have a background in Java web development but am new to GWT technologies. Although most of the topics covered in this book can be found in online documentation or tutorials, the book and examples given are much more clear, much less cluttered, more in depth, and much easier to understand.

GWT in Action is a good read, with the pace and depth of instruction just right, suggesting these guys enjoy writing. They like explaining stuff, and the book's editors would have been hard-pressed to eliminate a paragraph without losing an interesting and useful tip or aside. And these guys are GWT software library developers themselves (see the GWT Widget Library at SourceForge, by Mr Hanson). I was enthralled by the GWT presentations at the Google Developer Day 2007 in Sydney, and immediately bought Google Web Toolkit: GWT Java Ajax Programming by Prabhakar Chaganti. I liked it, but GWT in Action is significantly better, which I bought soon after. It's the best.

Not awful, but suffers from two faults:(1) It's very dated: mostly covers GWT 1.3, and we are on, what, 2.1 now? Huge changes, including Java 5 support, make much of what is said incorrect.(2) There's a lot of filler: server push/pull models explained, servlets, JUnit... completely unnecessary. The book could have been reduced by a third if this material were omitted.That said, I learned quite a bit from reading the book. The authors' writing style is quite good and it's mostly a pleasant read. The low rating is mostly due to the material being dated, and honestly, Manning should have brought out a second edition by now.

Like all Peter Matthiessen's works this is deep and insightful. To me he is one of the best authors in the last hundred years. Some cannot get into his writing however. Once the reader lets go and allows the idiom to overcome him the reader is not merely reading any more but becomes part of the story. I have read At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Far Tortuga and Shadow Country and was not able to put any of them down. Having spent time in the jungle, in Caribbean Central America and living in South Florida made it even easier for me to visualize his descriptions. Any mature serious reader cannot help but be left stunned by his writing. If you have not read Peter Matthiessen you have not read the some of the best of American Literature.

I read this book twice, in 1989 in Africa and in 1996 in Brazil, then I spent five years among the Yanomami Indians and was able to experience many of the things described in the story. I recently listened to the audiobook version and found it moving, fascinating and thought-provoking. Anthony Heald does a great job with voices and accents, speaks the Spanish parts well and does a good job rendering the Niaruna language. As a story, it is brilliantly told; Matthiessen's prose is vivid and his characters are richly crafted. The events are as tragic as anything in Shakespeare, but they are close to real life in their dimensions and horror. I have met many missionaries like the ones in this book, and a few mercenaries like Wolfie. The descriptions of life in the Amazon are precise and accurate; the book's depictions of indigenous peoples are marvelously evocative. No other book that I've read paints a clearer picture of the conflict between civilization and nature.

I have previously read and reviewed four other books by Peter Matthiessen, all of which I thought were fine books and to which I gave four stars. But I never quite thought of them as works of pure genius, not until I read this book. Here, Matthiessen's writing is so exquisite, nuanced and daringly spot-on that one scarcely knows how to describe it. He writes like an an angel or dæmon swooping down upon the South American jungle landscape and deep into the inner lives of those who populate it with a searing lyrical torch. I've never read anything quite like it.The setting could not seem more banal or clichéd: hypocritical evangelists, a jaded Catholic priest, primitive Indian tribes, a corrupt Spanish officer etc. But Matthiessen sets them all to dancing through dark and light, death and life in this book.He describes the Spanish cathedral as seen though the eyes of a Protestant missionary's wife thus:"Though she knew no Latin, the priest's ritual voice in the unearthly light evoked half-memories of illuminated manuscripts, of fat abbeys and round-pated monks, fair countrysides and far cathedrals against towering windy skies crossed by dark birds."and he describes the jungle as seen by a missionary thus:"He had wandered into a cathedral of Satan where all prayer was abomination, a place without a sky, a stench of death, vast somber naves and clerestories, the lost cries of savage birds - he whooped and called, but no voice answered."But, most of all, he describes the world as seen by Lewis Moon, the anti-hero of the book, with a frightening, magical sharpness, as when he parachutes into the jungle here:"He blinked, in tears; he was alive again, laughing idiotically in the clean sunlight of the upper air, legs dangling and swaying like the legs of a rag doll, drifting, drifting down through the great morning, in a wild silence like the wake of bells."I quote so extensively because it's simply impossible to convey the power of the book without putting its unearthly lyricism on display. Matthiessen is also a naturalist, of course, and his descriptions of the environment are as precise as his writing is ensorcelling, as profound as the depths to which he takes the readers into the souls of his characters.I don't know what else I can say save to urge every lover of literature to please, please don't let your life end without first reading this coruscating work of highest art.

The plot is engaging. I thought most of the characters were believeable and the main ones were pretty intriguing. I agree with another reviewer who said the character of Huben is too two-dimensional.Matthiesson uses a bad crutch in order to make one of the protagonists interesting: he makes many other characters unduly fascinated with him. They discuss him endlessly with no other objective but to help the reader understand how fascinating he is.Spoilers after this.The reason I didn't love it was Moon and his subplot. He wasn't as interesting as the author seemed to think. And his plot doesn't mean anything, not even that his story was pointless. I guess his journey downriver was meant to be lyrical in a ghastly way, but by then I thought the character had been worn thin.The ending felt kind of flat to me. Quarrier starts out as an interesting character, but his story doesn't quite do much. I sympathized with him, because his internal dynamics are interesting and I remember he was played by Aidan Quinn in the movie, and Quinn is pretty cool!The title does more than suggest a theme, it's part of a thesis: that people like missionaries who think they are truly helping vulnerable groups are often, in fact, really just trying to live out their own fantasies. Instead of working the fields of the lord, they're playing in them, enacting their own psychodramas if you will.I think this is nicely set up in most characters' stories, but I was left without a very strong impression on the subject. The end didn't entirely realize the setups. Because it kept me intrigued to the end, I'm rounding up my rating to four stars.

A beautiful book!The cover, a detail from a painting by Caspar David Friedrich of Grecian ruins on an island in the mist, sets the tone for this great selection of the tragic early 19th century poet Holderlin's work, illuminated by Michael Hamburger's sensitive translations and lovely introduction.

Overlooked important German poet

Impressive.

Great. Some violence, some sexual content. First person.

As a german reader I must say that the author had made excellent translations. You have the feeling that he translated with heart - very rich in his speech and sometimes surprising. Some verses of Hoelderlin, which are strange and not easy to understand are in his translations clearer and simpler to understand. " But it is the sea / That takes and gives remembrance, / And love no less keeps eyes attentively fixed, / But what is lasting the poets provide" (Remembrance).

I don't have much to say about Holderlin's poetry, which I find a bit stodgy and ungraceful, but I have to say I cannot read it in German, which I believe is a necessary prerequisite to any true read of poetry. I would merely like to share a poem that I found beautiful:SunsetWhere are you? Dazzled, drunken my soul grows faint And dark with so much gladness; for even now I listened while, too rich in golden Sounds, the enrapturing youth, the sun-godIntoned his evening hymn on a heavenly lyre; All round the hills and forests re-echoed it, Though far from here-to pious nations Who still revere him-by now he's journeyed.Wo bist du? Trunken dammert die Seele mir Von aller deiner Wonne; denn eben ist's, Dass ich gelauscht, wie, goldner Tone Voll der entzukende SonnenjunglingSein Abendlied af himmlischer Leyer speilt'; Es tonten rings die Walder und Hugel nach. I’m already a potter with several years experience, and I found this book to be a helpful resource. One of the things I like most is they focus on form. Sometimes decoration can over shadow a very simple but beautiful form and this book shows the forms in the bisqueware state. I also like that they explore the different types of vessels as wheel thrown, slab built and coil built. At this wonderful price you really shouldn’t pass up this resource.

This book is mainly about how to design/make your functional pieces, no glazing technique is mentioned, but definitely a great reference book for people who want improve your knowledge/skill about how to make functional pieces that both look good and work well.

This is an amazing book, the book is full of useful photography accompanied with carefully written descriptions. The book covers wheel thrown, coiled, and slab built. There is also explanation of many different types of handles and feet. I love that this is not just pretty pictures of someone's projects but thoughtful explanations of how to make each thing.

Just received the book today - LOVE IT!! I pre-ordered the book 4 months ago based on the quality of Jacqui's previous books, as well as the reputation of the publisher, 'Barron Books'. A match of 2 5-star creators, in my opinion. Book is well thought out with wonderful pictures. Jacqui covers a wide variety of topics and the book should appeal to potters of every level, whether you handbuild or throw. I cannot wait to try out some of her ideas. Great info regarding decor and handles and lids. Thanks Jacqui, for putting all this info in one book - easy on the eyes and encouragement for those creative juices! Now it's time to get to work!
