It's Friday night and I find myself standing at the edge of this horrible black chasm. I'm beginning to realize I may have to make a choice between my alcoholic child and myself. I can't believe I am even considering this but my doctor is becoming concerned. If my blood pressure doesn't improve she is suggesting medication, if my cholesterol doesn't improve she is suggesting medication, if my blood sugar keeps moving in the direction it is trending she is suggesting insulin. She is telling me I must reduce the stress in my life. I can't remember the last time I was able to sit in my home and enjoy a peaceful evening. Ever vigilant to the sounds coming from my adult child's home next door. Is the yelling just a loud tv program or is she and the boyfriend du jour having another fight. Is the crash I hear something or someone being thrown against the wall or just a door being closed too hard? It's late and I hear her car start up. Is she already drunk and heading out for more or is she heading to the bar to get blackout drunk and drive home that way? Should I call the police and warn them she is driving drunk and endangering everyone else on the road? Another promise has been broken and this time in such a cruel way I feel it is so personal but the other realization I am coming to is that it has nothing to do with me. She hasn't thought or worried about anyone but herself for a very long time. She is so deep in her addiction that's all she can see now and the loving thoughtful child I used to know is gone, lost in the alcoholic mist. How can I abandon her but how can I go on living like this? She cries, she promises, she claims to need me but it is becoming more and more clear she only needs me to use when it suits her and we are both growing sicker every day in this awful dance we do. I feel like I am standing on the curb watching this horrible crash beginning to unfold and there is nothing I can do to prevent it. All I can do is stand there and pray there is something left to salvage when it is over. I turn to the internet to look for help, answers, comfort, something and I stumble across this book. I order the sample for my kindle and as soon as I have finished it I order the book. I read into the night. I am brought to tears when the author talks about losing the family he remembers. I too have been mourning the loss of the times we were together laughing so hard our sides hurt, sharing delicious meals and playing games together. It's all gone now. I've lost my son to alcohol and now my daughter is slipping away. I read on and see my own life in the pages of this book and am so relieved to find out I am not the only one facing this heart breaking, gut wrenching choice. I'm not the only one struggling with the feelings of guilt and anger. I find the practical suggestions helpful and the realization that I am not the only parent standing on the edge of this awful chasm helps me calm and begin to think about what I am willing and able to do and what I am no longer willing or able to do. I highly recommend this to anyone loving and trying to live with an alcoholic.

This book literally saved my sanity. For anyone who has a child that is caught up in the insane world of substance abuse, this book should be required reading.It shows that you are not alone, that your feelings are what all of us feel in this situation and that hard as it is, there is a way back for you, the parent, to save yourself. Mr. Rubin is to be applauded for his honest and frank discussion of his own experience and for his solid and workable advice to parents on recovering their own lives in the midst of the hell that is the addiction of one's child. He also makes it clear that as much as the parent wants to help and save their child, the more important thing is to save yourself, because the child has to make the decision themselves to get help and turn their own life around.Mr. Rubin's greatest gift in this book is to tell his readers that they don't have to sacrifice themselves on the alter of "being a good parent" for a child hell bent on destruction, addiction and using the parents to sustain their habits, because the best thing to do is save yourself first, so you can be ready if and when the child is serious about getting clean. The parent has and is entitled to a life also, apart from addictions of their children.I have already given this book to several people I know in this struggle and sadly, I have a feeling will be giving several more.

This book changed my life. My son is an addict and it was eating me alive. I could have almost written some of the case studies in the book, so it really hit home and told me I am not alone in this struggle. It is no exaggeration to say that the book changed my life. At the time I read it I was so filled with anxiety that I was on two different anti-anxiety / anti-depression drugs and spending each night tossing and turning. After reading it, I got off those meds and am now back among the human race. This book won't solve your problems or your kids' problems, but it sure made it clear to me that I had already done what I could and now it is up to my son. It is extreme tough love, but anything much short of that just doesn't seem to work. I still fear for my son's future, but have accepted that it is not something that I can change - he has to do the changing.

Some months ago I read a review that said that this book was written for those with large flocks...not really practical for the backyard chicken owner. Because of that review I decided not to purchase the book. But when I saw it in my local library I checked it out.I started taking notes of things I wanted to remember. After having a full page of notes after just getting to page 64 I decided it would be worth it just to buy the book.I haven't come across any information yet that I don't feel is relevant to me (have only 6 chickens), but if and when I do, the overwhelming amount of very useful tips and techniques I've already taken from book will cause any superfluous information to be a minor point, not even worth considering.I highly recommend this book.

Very thorough! Covers the most important things you need to know about raising chickens from egg to putting meat on the table. (Unless you want to keep chickens solely as pets) I can see myself returning to this book to use for reference or sharing with friends! Covers things like breeds, bird size, egg size, how to start chicks and the times and seasons that are perfect for raising chickens and also goes over symptoms for illnesses, even in the end it shows how to process or dress your chickens for food! I feel like this book has everything a beginner like me would need.

My family and I have recently started raising chickens. I have been looking for a book for some time. Something with just the information we need. We just plan to have a small flock, of less than a dozen or so, to raise for eggs and meat. Most of the information in this book seems to be geared towards raising a small flock. There is some info about larger flocks. It is full of very useful information. It explains everything from how to heal wounded chickens yourself to how to select a chicken for butchering. It also has info on how to make your own feeders and waterers so that you don't have to purchase them. I was very impressed with this book and intend to purchase more of Storey's books as we decide to expand on our self sufficiency. Whether you're raising in your backyard or you have a barn and pasture, I recommend this book for anyone just starting out with chickens.

This is an awesome book. If you have ever had any questions, or have ever considered raising your own chickens, this is the book for you. We were "gifted" with 4 laying hens by a neighbor. I was raised on a farm, but I hadn't had my own chickens in more than 20 years, so I thought I could use a little professional help. That's exactly what I found when I opened the book. It is very well organized, the index is easy to navigate, so you don't spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly in an effort to find the answer to a specific issue. The book is full of good, useable information, and is an excellent reference tool for anyone, amateur, novice or possibly even the odd chicken whisperer.

I have a single chicken (‘Bertha’) that showed up one day a year or two ago. Her boyfriend (‘Rudy’) came first then she came a day later. She’s been around all this time. I needed to learn about chickens quickly and this book, along with other sources of reference, came in handy!

While it is geared towards a larger keepers. It still a good place to get information in regards to keeping chickens. For my self i am just starting with a few hens. the wife is already pushing for a rooster and expanding the flock.Read it with intention that if you intend to expand your flock. This book is for you. It does stay away from pushing the go all organic idea. For myself that just is not as practical idea as some might think. But I would urge you to buy and jeep it handy as it does contain knowledge you will find handy down the road.I do have this on my kindle, but am old fashion. The physical book allows me to walk out in to my back yard put it down with out worrying if moisture is about to destroy a $200+ USD piece of electronics.. LOL

Packed with helpful information and a great resource for keeping chickens. A must if you a new to raising chickens for eggs or meat. I have kept chickens for years and still learned some valuable information to make my life even easier and my chickens happier.

This is a very good, lightweight overview of Bermuda and will come in very handy for first time and repeat visitors. Those seeking information on beaches, golf and diving will find it very helpful as the author goes into great details on those topics. While there is some background, particularly on the early "explorers" (accidental, it seems, due to the propensity of sailing vessels to become stranded there), there is not a whole lot of in-depth back story of the islands. I would have liked to learn more of the native settlers (where they came from), how they managed to eke out an existence on a somewhat hostile land, what provoked more Europeans to come there to live, etc etc. More photos, in color, would have been nice. But I suppose there are other books that would highlight more of the historical aspects I am seeking.As a reference guide, it is very well written and you can tell how much the author enjoys this destination. I appreciated the "homey" style in which it is written, much like a nice long letter one would have written back in the day when travelers on holiday wrote to their friends and family back home. I like that his "two cents" is offered, particularly with regard to restaurants and accommodations.The only other negatives I have (besides the lack of color photos) are: Not ONE page in my copy of the book has a page number printed on it! There is a table of contents with page numbers listed, but leafing through the book = no page numbers at all! (fortunately it's a slim enough book that you can eventually find what you're looking for) The other is that it's loaded with typos. Apparently the "percent" symbol was not available on whatever keyboard was used to type this; no where does it appear (one example: when stating the population, it gave a breakdown of white versus black, and the percentage symbol failed to print but I understood what it meant; there were several other instances where " % " was missing but, again, I understood) Date issues: A date of 1503 is given for Juan Bermudez's arrival there then went on to say that "six years later....." and the date of 1609 is given. So, which is it? Was 1503 supposed to be 1603 or was 1609 supposed to be 1509? There is also a number of misspelled words that could have easily been caught by spell-check or more thorough proof read.Overall, I gave it 4 stars because 3.5 wasn't an available option. It's helpful and informative and written by someone who obviously loves visiting Bermuda and loves sharing it. If you want a quick reference guide, you will find this a good choice (and you can easily number the pages if your copy needs it!) If you want much more in-depth history, background, flora/fauna, you will do better with a different book as this one merely scratches those surfaces - enough to satisfy the average tourist. It's also light enough to easily tuck into your carry-on bag so you can travel with it.

I would use only as a secondary source of information. Helpful and fun to read about the author's personal experience with restaurants, places to stay, attractions, etc.

I should have opted for a 2014 book. A lot of the information is still valid but prices are not and hotel condition change quickly. One of the places mentioned had even closed and several had changed hands.

I bought three copies of this book - first a Kindle version that I liked enough to purchase two hard copies for myself and for another couple traveling with us. It was a good way of getting a lay of the land and ideas of what we wanted to do. This was my 5th trip to Bermuda and I found information in this book that I didn't know existed in Bermuda, which was great.Be aware this appears to be a "homegrown" publication from the typos and some wrong information - none of which had to do with changes of admission prices, etc. that you can't count on anyway. There were two pieces of "misinformation" that we came upon: 1) about a Monday event at Fort Hamilton, pipe band and drummers at noon. We found out from the Visitors Center this only takes place during November - March, rather than all year long, but the book says nothing about that. 2) The book says if you show your transportation pass at Gibbs Lighthouse you get free admission. Not so. It wasn't a biggie price wise, but the salesperson says they have been very upset that it has been published and folks expect it when they come. She said they have contacted the writer asking it to be corrected to no avail. This caused us to become suspect of any details/info provided in the book of this nature.I hadn't realized at the time that this author writes similar books for a number of islands. Perhaps he has visited at one time or another but I am not sure he is keeping up with things or double checking information.Having said that though, I give this a book a good grade because it was very helpful before we went and an easy read. Just know not all the facts are correct and if I were to get another book of his I'd double check his information before making plans based on his information.

I will use this font book for making and transferring words on clay pieces, then carve the clay lettering / numbers. There are so many different styles within this book, I will never be able to use them all, beautiful. Also I did not know whether it would contain numeric fonts, IT DOES IN ABOUT 99% OF THE STYLES. I am very, very happy with this book.

I spend hours looking for a particular font-then I bought this book-amazingly-it was included-My Search Was Over. Unfortunately, although now I know the name, finding it as downloadable is been a challenge.

I was hoping for a calligraphy book...Gothic, Celtic, Unical scripts, etc. What I got was a book of various, extremely similar fonts--like a compilation of cursive pc fonts. My bad. I should have investigated further before purchasing.

Lots of new fonts I hadn't seen before. Very clear illustrations and a good size. The only thing that could improve this book was if it was ring bound so it would stay open better.

Beautiful written book. very easy to follow directions. Have already been practicing. Would recomment to anyone that is wanting to learn to write script.

a little more explanation would be great, like which tip is best for each font. But there's a lot of great examples of different styles of font to practice from.

I was born in the 1940s, so I have no way of knowing what the 30s were really like in New York City. However, if Mr. Towles's vision of New York in that era is not correct, who cares? He depicts the town brilliantly - its jazz and its cacopohony, the elegance of its wealthy and the squalor of its poor, and so on. His characters are also smart and witty and empathetic, and their dialogue is crackling good. All in all, a great, nostalgic read that has more to it than just nostalgia.A few criticisms that make the book slightly less than a true four:-- In quite a few places the characters' dialogue is just a little too witty; so many of the characters are just too quick and too smart too often; its strains credibility.--There were some typos, though I read the Kindle version and I find that happens quite a bit.--There is a cardinal sin in this book - specifically, a reference to a Dodger Stadium in Brooklyn when the reference should have been to Ebbets Field. Even someone like me (born in the 40s and not a Dodger fan to boot) knows that the Dodgers played at Ebbets Field until they moved to LA and into Dodger Stadium, but that was much later. Shame on the author and, worse, on the editors (if there were any). In a book that otherwise seems to be as true as it could be to a bygone era, this is an almost unforgivable sin.

I still have 19% to go on my Kindle, but I just had to stop to savor. It's one of those books which makes you feel you will never find a more suitable one for you. It fits (me) just right. It allows me to be free to write as I want to write. It's Katey's life: she gets to lead it.I had just finished "A Gentleman in Moscow." I thought well for something almost as good I'll move to Towles' first book. Now I don't know which one is better. They are both better. Better. Betterer. Bettest. She thrust the key down into her pants, my goodness!

I started reading this book because it came up on a search for answers for CRPS. I got involved in the author’s story about her life. She wrote it so personal and I was listening to each word. Enjoy the reading AND then also get information about CRPS. She lives in my neck of the woods too which was pretty cool as well. Well written book with personality and good medical information. I found this book to be a great read for sure!

Amazing story

Ok, this story is so very confusing that I had to stop reading it not even half way through. She leaves her husband in Arizona to head to Chicago with her family and 3 pages later she's talking about seeing her first doctor in arizona while her husband watched over their daughter, And it keeps getting more confusing, I quit. Good thing I didn't purchase but read it for free
