I must have a dozen Eyewitness guides to various parts of the globe and have been extremely pleased with the detail and content. That is, until NOW. I am giving it only 2 stars solely because it is not helpful as a guide to the Amalfi Coast. This is a disappointing Eyewitness Guide. It is mostly all about Naples ( 4 star in respect to being a Naples guide with good information on Pompeii, but it's sorely lacking as a guide to the Amalfi coast. If you are only going to Naples and or Pompeii then YES, it is fine . As a guide to the "Amalfi Coast & Amalfi coastal towns it sadly, does not provide enough content to be of much use in traveling to the coastal towns and villages.. Yes, Naples appears in large text on the cover and the Amalfi coast in much smaller but I was under the impression that it would also be a useful guide for the Amalfi coast. I found this book in that regard as not much of a help in planning my trip and I was relegated to surf Google to find information that was detailed. The tiny (thumbnail) and vague map of Sorrento ,for example, is of little help to anyone planning a visit. Just a few pages on Sorrento. A few short paragraphs on Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. . Not very detailed information on Capri or Anacapri no maps of the towns on the island. . Merely two pages on Capri . These are very popular destinations and some of the most beautiful land and seascapes in the world and they deserved more attention in the "guide". I even found the food and wine section to be less interesting and not as informative that I had hoped for. Maps of the coastal towns showing ports and ferry landing sites , bus stops would have been very useful in navigating the Amalfi coast. In the back of the book there are a few mentions of restaurants and hotels but really not that comprehensive either. skipping some of the best while including some that do not get very good reviews. I am sorry I bought this, as my trip does not include any significant time in Naples or Pompeii , to which this book is totally geared to.

The Eyewitness Travel Guides serie is the indispensable companion to all your travel. It is always a joy to know that you are going to visit a part of the world that is covered by their guides. Detailed street by street maps, wonderful pictures, drawings and explanations of monuments, great resource index: these guides are second to none in my opinion. The main part of the Naples and Amalfi Coast guide is dedicated to Naples, so if you are only going to visit Sorrento or Amalfi you may be tempted to look at this book as not focused enough on your area of interest. I found that the Naples section sets the context for the historical and cultural significance of the entire areal, and therefore the entire book really makes sense no matter where your travels take you. I was vacatoning with my dad who has limited mobility, staying in Sorrento, and this book really helped maximize our focus on sights that he could handle and enjoy. Simple villages such as Massa Lubrense, for example, would be very easy to miss. I would feel bad not mentioning the restaurant "O Parrucchiano" listed page 201 under Sorrento: it was the epitome of hospitality and a place you can only picture in a fairy tale. And if you were not planning to visit Naples, may this guide inspire you to do so - you absolutely won't regret it.

The pictures of the Eyewitness travel series are usually great. However, I feel that there are many pictures that simply are not "trip worthy," and can be easily skipped (and some even downright avoided because it is not safe for tourists). I brought this book along with me when I traveled the Amalfi coast --- great visuals about the history of Pompeii, the volcano, and the surrounding areas. However, for the cities, it lacks value. Nonetheless, if you are looking for the esoteric and artistic side of the coast that most (if not all) of the books avoid, then this book could certainly help you.

The Eyewitness Travel Guides are my "go-to" books for info about most destinations. This one is another good example -- the only reason I gave a four-star versus five-star review is that the book is primarily about Naples --- the title and relative print size might be a clue there! I'm just flying in and out of Naples, however, and spending my time on the Amalfi Coast which gets much less treatment here. But still a great book to add to my travel collection.

This guide book contributed to our wonderful trip to Naples. I always get the DK guide before going to a European city.

Recently purchased this book based on reviews I read but a little disappointed in it's content. The book has wonderful pictures and great descriptions of places to see in Naples but not so much content on Amalfi Coast. Since we were only spending a day in Naples and a week on the Amalfi coast, I had to look for additional reading material to supplement the Amalfi Coast.

Good tour guide; not so much about meals and lodging. Gorgeous photos.

This series is great. It provides a good overview of the city then breaks it down to sections so you understand the city.

From Booklist

Reeling from her divorce, Sadie Turner packs up her kids to spend the summer at her eccentric Aunt Dody's lake house. What's meant to be a quiet respite turns into a fun-filled adventure, thanks to her aunt, flamboyant cousin Fontaine, and a handsome neighbor. Desmond, who's filling in for the local doctor, is Scottish and charming and takes immediately to Sadie's colorful family. As far as everyone's concerned, he's the perfect summer fling. But when what starts as a casual and steamy interlude evolves into something more serious, Sadie and Des must decide whether they can open up again after heartbreak. Debuting romance novelist Brogan, who also has a historical romance coming out later this year, shows a real knack for creating believable yet quirky characters. Her contemporary romance has the usual misunderstandings and requisite happy ending, but the surprising emotional twists along the way make it a satisfying romp. --Aleksandra Walker

My summer reading goals include some historical fiction titles and literary classics, so I like to add some light mysteries and pool reads to the list. This book had some laugh-out-loud moments but was Lifetime-Movie predictable from beginning to end. I felt the biggest distraction was the author's display of her political preferences and attempted humor directed at religion that more than hinted at disrespect. If the context had remained the same, but words changed to a race or another religious belief - I'm sure the author would not have utilized that to attempt humor. If you're into light reading - get a rock to anchor the book to your table. There are plenty of fun reads out there. I won't be seeking out this author again.

I loved this book on several levels: 1. Great setting, something different from the standard. Western Michigan on the lake. 2. Fantastic characterization. By the end of the book, I was in love with the characters and would have wanted to live with all of them as well. I don't know if they were based on real people, but the author really did a good job of creating characters that leave an impression. 3. Writing humor is very, very difficult, and Brogan's humor was refreshing and truly funny. I re-read some of the more clever lines in hopes of remembering them, and that's saying something for all the reading and writing I do. 4. A strong plot supported by interesting subplots that made sense and moved the story along. It wasn't face-paced nor did it drag. The momentum was consistent and everything came together in the end.I had the advantage of reading this book after one that tried to be funny but wasn't. There is a distinct difference. I loved this author's writing style and see her as a true talent. Highly recommend!

I have to say that anyone who would give this book only one star has absolutely no sense of humor! You poor things. As a constant reader nearly my entire life, I found this to be one of the funniest books I've ever read, which is saying a lot. I've lost track of how many times I've laughed out loud. I love this book and I'm only a little over a fourth of the way through it, and can barely put it down. I've never read Tracy Brogan before, but I had downloaded three of her books, thank goodness, all Bell Harbor novels. I got them for a bargain price of $1.99 each. I only wish she'd already written a bunch of books rather than just a handful so far.If the other two books I downloaded are anywhere near as enjoyable as this one, I am looking forward to a lot more from Tracy Brogan. Now back to the hilarious Sadie, her funny Aunt Dody, and that adorable Des, not to mention those "carbuncles" on the bottoms of ships. Oh, and right after I sent in this review and went back to the book, I read that Sadie's daughter loved to read, " a product of being named Paige Turner." Another laugh out loud moment. Thank goodness we can edit our reviews!

Sadie, late 20's, divorced mother of two young kids, decides to spend the summer by Lake Michigan with her kooky aunt and assorted grown-up male cousins. There she meets Des, 36yo Scottish doctor, and an offbeat courtship/relationship ensues. This was a pretty quick read. Although it wanted to be really funny, it came off more as ridiculous in my opinion. I've read other romances where I actually laughed out loud (some books by Sophie Kinsella, for one) but this was not really one of them. However, it was still an enjoyable read--Des was totally HOT and a nice guy without being a wuss or a control freak--best case scenario.Sadie JUST skirted the edge of being one of those heroines who says, "I don't know why he would like me, I'm such a mess" and you find yourself agreeing with her. She pulled back just enough between the ridiculous acts of craziness that I wasn't totally annoyed with her. Although, strangely, I never really got a sense of what she looked like. Brown hair and eyes, and she denigrated herself at every turn. But others said she was beautiful, even her ex and he was a total narcissist who would probably never be caught dead with anyone rating less than a 9. She said she had worked out like crazy to try to "help her marriage" before the divorce so her body was great, but a few pages later, she'd be saying how she had to stand up straight and suck in her gut when Des was near. She just never came into focus. There's a bit of sex in the book but none of it is graphic or even detailed. Even so it didn't bother me. I would have liked to have seen more of Sadie and Des as a couple among other people. It seemed like almost every time they were together and happy, it was in private. Any other time they were shown in public something ridiculous happened. Ridiculous was a running theme in this book. When they went sailing with Des's friends, it was the only time they were out among others that some kind of zaniness didn't occur. Truthfully, I spent the whole chapter waiting for her to fall in the water or something. In any event, the reason I decided to write this review is because if I had known before reading what I found out on THE LAST PAGE I would not have bought the book:SPOILERS*********************************There seem to be whole chapters missing in the end. Sadie never has any kind of real understanding or communication with her mother. It was like her mother was just a one-dimensional prop to show Sadie what she could turn into, without explaining why or how she got there. At one point, Sadie's aunt sums the mother up in one line--someone must have disappointed her at some point and it made her not trust anyone. Could she be any more vague??We don't find out if Sadie's aunt will be okay. Although, that vagueness didn't bother me as much as the first.BUT, the biggest problem for me, was the fact that AT NO TIME, not even when Des comes back and tells Sadie he needs her and she makes him "flustered" does he EVER say, he loves her. And she doesn't either. As a matter of fact, Sadie says a couple of times that she isn't in love with him, or she might be falling for him. The only time she actually says she loves Des, is when she's lying to her ex.I was so floored. It was bad enough the author waits until the last 2 friggin' pages to get them back together. But then to not even reach the finish line (in these books, the L word is the finish line IMO), was completely disappointing. I was so annoyed, I reread the last few pages to make sure I hadn't missed it. But--no! He never says he loves her.END SPOILERS******So there you have it--ridiculous zaniness with some amusing side characters and a hot leading man but, in the end, unsatisfying--for me, at least.

A perfect mixture of comedy abnd romance. Sadie, a divorced mother of 2, moves to Bell Harbor to get away from her ex relax. She meets Des, an ER doctor, and the chase and humor begins. Sadie stays with her Aunt Dody, an off kilter person, who continually spouts malapropisms, asks inapprropriarpte questions, but has a heart of gold. Sadie overthinks, get flustered easily, but has a sharp wit, and despite herself, finds her attraction to Des growing. Des has his own issues, but is inexorably drawn to Sadie. With many missteps along the way, and plenty ohf humor, Sadie and Des find each other.

I just couldn't get through this book. Quite frankly, I'm baffled at all the high reviews. This book literally drained me to read.First let's start with the fact that the characters read far younger than they are. Tessa reads more 16 than a college student and Hardin doesn't read close to 20 which he would be as a second year student. Tessa's internal monologue was grating and the constant screaming and use of exclamation marks was just—well let's just say I would rather stick bamboo in my fingernails then continue reading. On to the next point which may contain spoilers so skip this if you don't want anything spoiled. Neither character had any redeemable qualities. I read a lot about it being a toxic relationship and people putting the blame on Hardin, but let's be honest, Tess is just as bad. What this book boils down to is sex and not love. After Hardin constantly treating her like crap she always runs back and guess what they do? Yup, fool around. So I repeat, that's not love, that's lust. For instance: After getting in a big fight with Hardin (and after cheating on her boyfriend for weeks) Tessa calls her BF and begs him to skip out on school and drive 3 hours to see her just to piss Hardin off. Once he gets there, she ditches him the second Hardin "needs her" then proceeds to take her boyfriend's car and stay the night with Hardin without telling her BF. Then proceeds to screw around with Hardin. Things obviously blow up the next day but then she gets back with her boyfriend to once again cheat on him and then dump him. These are HER actions, nothing Hardin pushes, in fact he tells her she's pathetic and stupid for breaking it off with him. Then there is a crap ton of back and forth. Seriously, they fight every chapter and considering most chapters are below 1,500 words that's draining. The final blow is the fact that the writing is crap. Very choppy and the lack of contraction makes the writing seem odd. Most people won't say "I will take you. they'll say "I'll take you." I don't mind it in the narration, but when people are talking it should sound like people are talking. In the end, I made it to 65% which is pretty good considering I had to stop frequently. I'm really not sure how this is so popular and why just like 50 shades, they are making a movie which will obviously be terrible because the source material is terrible. (Speaking of 50 shades, there are so many plot points taken from there it literally made me roll my eyes.) I did skip to the end and the way it ends is so contrived I just can't. At almost 600 pages you would think more would actually happen. So, if you like characters with actual substance, then skip this book. If you want to read constant yelling then screwing around with no underlying ANYTHING—then this is your book.

I don't usually write reviews, but I couldn't help it this time. I am not exaggerating when I say it is one of the most poorly written books I've ever read. The dialogue is stale and repetitive. The descriptors are pretty much non-existent (the author doesn't SHOW us anything, she always TELLS us). The main characters aren't developed well at all. The few times that the author sets up a perfect scenario for us to find out more about our characters, she just glosses over any details that could make us actually like them. As a result, all that we see is that Hardin is abusive and Tessa is childish.Tessa is supposed to be this innocent person, but she purposefully pushes Hardin's buttons and throws herself at him around every corner. Hardin physically grabs Tessa throughout the whole book when she's trying to remove herself from the situation, therefore removing her option of escape, and then proceeds to tell her emotionally and mentally abusive things. I'm in my twenties, not much older than these characters are supposed to be, but every single time I read their conversations, I thought I was reading the words of elementary school children. I couldn't even make it all the way through the unnecessarily lengthy novel because I was so tired of reading the same argument after the 100th time after their breakup/makeup.I sincerely hope that whoever reads this book does not view this relationship as something to strive towards. Please, for the sake of every other good novel out there, do not waste your money on this one.

This book is seriously messed up. I read it because my friend liked it and I said I’d read it so we could see the movie together this spring. I will not support this and can’t fathom why someone would make this into a movie. As I was reading, I kept a little list of inconsistencies and other problems I could discuss with my friend later. I’ll go through those, but they all pale in comparison to the serious issues of emotional abuse, alcoholism, and PTSD that were used as cavalier plot devices.Anna Todd really wants you believe the main character, Tessa, is an innocent and studious planner. I find it hard to believe such a serious and focused person who only applied to one college never went to visit the campus she dreamed of attending. Did I mention the campus was only 2-3 hours away? (It was 2 hours in the beginnning then it’s 3 hours so idk.) This just one example of the many ways Todd tells the reader things instead of showing us. Also, people always apply to more than one college! I’m also confused about the size of this campus/student body. It takes 20 minutes to find her first class and 30 minutes to walk to the admin office which would make you think it was large. However, she happens to share (all?) at least 2 classes with her friend, Landon. Even if they shared the same major, that would be unlikely at such a large school. A one point, Tessa mentions Landon by his first name only to the (punk?) group of friends and they know who he is. How? It is so unlikely considering they run in different circles, don’t have similar majors, and the campus is supposedly so big. I don’t know about all campuses, but usually the frat houses aren’t so far away, freshman cannot have cars on campus, and its never easy to find a parking spaces all the time. There are other issues with the school/frat and the whole plot reaks of high school drama, so it’s clear Todd never attended a college like the one she (I would say describes but she never really describes it) uses as the setting for this story. I don’t even want to mention the actual classroom scenes becasue they are so cringeworthy. Todd attempts and fails to use the sparksnotes version of Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice to draw parallels between those main charactors and her own. It’s so bad. Another issue I have to address is: Do NOT share eyeliner! Ever! Thats a great way to get an infection. Why even put that in the story???Ok, I’ll ignore how the timeline jumps weeks and skips Thanksgiving all together, the amazing internship and inprobale way her classes can easily be changed so far into the semester, and Trevor who is randomly at the wedding(?) to get to the bigger issues. All the character lack depth especially the female characters who are reduced to their tattoos and clothes. The (lack of) female friendships are sad and discarded as soon as Tessa doesn’t need them. The slut shaming is incessant and uncalled for. Tessa cheats on her boyfriend of 2 years. It’s ok for her to do that, but a single woman hooking up with someone is a slut? I think it says a lot more about the author than about any character. The emotional abuse in blatant and inexcuable. Hardin, the love interest whose randomly Britsh and clearly based off Harry Styles, is emotionally abusive to Tessa and Tessa is physically violent towards him (she slaps him on two occasions). Deleting someone messages and controlling who they see to keep them for yourself is not romantic or sexy. It’s terrifying. I was ashamed and frighten by how easily this behavior is accepted and excused. Are readers meant to accept this behavior because Hardin has PTSD and has alcoholic tendencies? Yes becasue obviously, naive 18 year old Tessa can save him. (‘She is an adult after all’ she remindes the reader several times.) They are *truly* meant to be together. It’s terrible. I despise the narrative that women have to save men. (We are busy! Find someone else to save you!) I have to mention my other least favorite trope which is this story (of course). Side note: Of course is Todd’s favorite phrase to overuse. Hardin says something like I love a women who eats. Wow, it’s so sexy that women need food for life and they actually enjoy it? How exhilarating and novel! I, for one, am glad Hardin finally found someone that eats. Truly a match made in heaven. Alcoholism is not discussed in a meaningful even though its supposed to be something to bond Tessa and Hardin together. For two people with alcoholic fathers, you would think they would have different opinions on alcohol and acknowledge/work through their abandonment issues in a more productive way. There are so many more things to say but I’m getting tired and depressed thinking about this book, so I’ll try to finish by saying the ending (or lack there of) didn’t make sense. I assume it ends that why so people will jump to read that next one, but I relieved it was over and sad I wasted time on it. The whole was a bet thing came out of left field. It didn’t really make sense in the whole narrative and it was not hinted at all. If it was such a competitive game and there was a big prize, why did it seem like Hardin was the only one playing? Why did no one tell? Can you really believe that Steph, a sophomore in college and seemly friendly person, wouldn’t tell? Are we supposed to believe women are that terrible to other women? I don’t buy it. I guess it was thrown in to keep the story and emotional/psychological abuse rolling. In conclusion, please don’t read this book.

Great book!

If you are looking for a straightforward, no nonsense explanation and description of building envelope systems used in common residential construction today----this book is probably not for you. Probably a good text for architecture students who paid a lot of money to take the class and must spend time on esoteric principles vs. real world practices. I found the layout of the book difficult to read and the content wordy, to say the least. If you like an abundance of graphic styles in lieu of just plain English and easily readable information, then you might like this text. Long on theory and short on applications. No index. Definitely not a field manual. Rain screens???

Building Envelopes: An Integrated Approach by Jenny Lovell provides a great compact overview without getting into too much detail on any one element - perfect for students seeking an big picture look at the subject or practitioners looking for fresh ideas on the topic and ways to express them. Overall, the book should appeal to both academics and practitioners interested in something other than a conventional approach to creating building enclosures. The text is divided into three sections: Feedback Loops, Elements of a Holistic Approach and lastly, Strategies; a series of case studies illustrating the points made earlier in the book. The book advocates an approach to building skin design that takes the particularities of the project, including its site and situation, into consideration in lieu of a run of the mill solution. Coverage of impacts on the building envelope due to climate and energy control are particularly strong. While the approach may not be novel to all readers, the way it is described and illustrated could not be made more clear or effective. In fact, the color graphics are consistently excellent and original. The images alone tell a compelling story about envelope design and construction.Building Envelopes is part of a book series which includes another great title, Digital Fabrications: Architectural and Material Techniques by Lisa Iwamoto. Another book you might enjoy (at over 5 times the cost and size) containing a similar series of case studies advocating an integrated approach is Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture by Leonard Bachman. For a contemporary look at the subject Building Envelopes: An Integrated Approach is a great choice.
