I may need to buy the book.I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section:Self Awareness Strategies:1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say.2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example:Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list.Self Management Strategies:1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful.Social Awareness Strategies:1. Become a great observer. It feels so true.However, there’s a difference between something feeling true and something being true.In Adam Grant’s Give and Take, he identifies three types of people: givers, matchers, and takers. Givers are the selfless ones. Matchers are the quid pro quo group, and takers are the selfish ones. Conventional wisdom tells us takers get ahead, but in Grant’s research, givers rise to the top more frequently.As I read this book I was kind of in disbelief the whole time, but page after page, Grant hit me with more evidence. I definitely think of myself as a giver (though I know I’m not perfect, I’m sure I have regretfully done some matching and taking in my life) and if you look at my life right now I don’t think anyone would identify me as losing. In the 11 years as a venture capitalist, Hornik has offered 28 term sheets and twenty-five have accepted.“In this book, I want to persuade you that we underestimate the success of givers like David Hornik,” Grant asserts.Giving can be more powerful and less dangerous than most would believe. “Givers reverse the popular plan of succeeding first and giving back later, raising the possibility that those who give first are often best positioned for success later,” Adam explains. The award is made by the Governor General of Canada to honour volunteers. In their life stories, these highly successful givers mentioned a quest for power and achievement almost twice as often as the comparison group. They also had roughly 20% more objectives related to gaining influence, earning recognition, and attaining individual excellence.Takers score high in self-interest and low in other-interest and selfless givers score high on other-interest and low on self-interest. I’ll be honest, urban fiction isn’t really my my thing, but this book certainly changed that. Destiny does an incredible job transporting the reader into present day South Los Angeles through the eyes of Brishelle Temple, a conflicted women with millennial tendencies.The author captures the black church, black relationship dynamics, and the infamous side-chick odyssey well. I love her use of figurative language that jolt clear, accurate, and sometimes hilarious visuals into your imagination. Her dialogue is authentic and crisp, while her storytelling ability and arc will leave you enthralled for hours. And if you have spent time South LA, much of the landscape in this book will feel familiar.I certainly can’t wait until the second part of this series is released. And for 99 cents, you can expect to get more than your money’s worth.

The story seemed to drag on and I actually skipped a few pages that just seemed to be taking up space. I've already purchased the other two books so I'm hoping it gets better.

It was interesting, kind of wish the book was longer. But it's a series so we will see. So far so good.

Good read

Brishelle was a desperate, delusional hot mess. She thought she had it all together and better than other women, even the one whose husband she tried to steal. How could she judge Tasha or her marital situation not even knowing anything about her? And she called herself a Christian. SMH. The things she did on sacred ground, Lord, I'd be afraid of a lightning bolt from God's wrath. And AJ is a snake who told Brishelle everything she wanted to hear just to get what he wanted. These people pretending to be saints...Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Brishelle is a young, beautiful, single, churchgoing, confused young lady. Brishelle is desperate to find a man. Brishelle falls in love with AJ; the married keyboardist at church. AJ tells Brishelle everything that she wants to hear. She is looking for love in all the wrong places.

So many twist and turns. Bre got just what she wanted. You don't play in Gods house. And never look for happiness with a married man.

This was my first read by this author and I enjoyed it. It was a good read and I can't wait for PT.2. I don't what made Brishelle think that messing with a married man and that God sent him to her. Twisted way of thinking and a real eye opener. I hope she gets her act together. Good job Destiny.

I was expecting a much more detailed explanation of market cycles and the techniques to exploit them. This book would be better titled "Why you should pay attention to market cycles". If you're looking for a technical book on tatical asset allocation through different market cycles, I highly recommend "Applied financial macroeconomics and investment strategy". Overall, if you are above novice level of investor I do not recommend this book. However, if you are novice level then this book can give you solid general philosophies and general strategies which is essential when beginning your investing journey.

Unfortunately, would not recommend. Pretty simplistic and the material in the book has been covered in his memos. Recommend getting his first book and reading all of his memos instead.

Being blunt, most investment books suck - I have about a hundred of them on my shelves (which doesn't include the tons I've given away), and there's only a brief handful that were worth an entire read, much less rereads. But there are a precious few that get read again and again (Intelligent Investor, One Up and Beating the Street, anything by John Train, etc.) and these days I can feel that rare emotion welling up inside me when I know I'm learning something - something important. Mastering the Market Cycle is just such a book.In many ways, Marks is a very quirky writer. As other folks have noted, he does repeat things from time to time, and his style is so easy going you might be tempted to think it is simplistic - but don't make this insanely bad mistake. Marks is easy to read because he covers his material and thoughts with absolute precision, because he has thought long and hard about what to say, and the continuous repetition occurs because that's how things work in life - they are interconnected. Besides, repetition in this manner is EXACTLY how you want a complicated topic to be taught, and Marks is a master at instruction.Course, I have another reason for getting excited about this book - I recognize the scared frightened investor I was in 2008 and 2009, and if I'd read this book - or all those Memo's - and actually internalized them I'm next to certain my results would have been much improved. And isn't that what we want in our investment books - an improvement in our technique? I can think of no higher compliment.This is a phenomenal book and if you manage money for a living you'd be a fool not to read it, and if you invest for yourself you are going to learn a lot. I mean, a lot - and you are going to reread this thing again and again. This is a VERY deep thinking book by a guy with a lot to teach, and opportunities like this one don't come along very often.And you get this wisdom and knowledge for $18? Absolutely crazy - thanks to the author, thank you very much.

I waited impatiently for this book to arrive and was surprised that it didn't contain much information about actual market cycles or how to exploit them. Mostly contains some general investing advice that may be better suited for beginning investors. I do have great respect for the author, but actually preferred his first book to this and would recommend that book instead. I tend to not give reviews on books that I didn't love, but the title compelled me to this time.

Repetition of material is pushed to the limit. Restating what is stated in a long past memo to investors and then restating the restatement multiple times through-out the book. Nothing new was revealed or explored - basically not helpful and a bit boring.

Howard Marks of the very successful Oaktree Capital Management has written a way too long and very repetitive book on understanding market cycles. Where was his editor when we needed him/her? Nevertheless his “Mastering the Market Cycle” is an important book that will give disciplined investors great insight. Discipline is the operative word, because without it Marks’ insights are of limited value.Marks cites five critical cycles: 1) economic, 2) profits, 3) stock market 4) credit and 5) risk. An investor has to know where we are with respect to each of those cycles and most important is the risk cycle which is determined by the psychology of investors. Simply put are they greedy or are they fearful. Although this sounds easy in theory it is very difficult to implement. For example it is very hard to be bearish when the whole world is bullish, this I know from experience, and conversely it is even harder to be bullish when the whole world is bearish. It is at the extremes where the most money is to be made and where discipline is most needed.The problem with implementing Marks’ ideas is that it is difficult to know how long a cycle will go on. Marks’ cites Greenspan’s famous “irrational exuberance speech of late 1996, only to witness the late 90s bull market to roar on for another three years. Although Marks was brilliant in backing up the truck in the credit markets at the height of the Lehman crisis in 2008, even he admits it was a close run thing and his success was dependent upon the efforts of Paulson, Bernanke and Geithner in stemming its worst effects.Putting Marks’ ideas to use today I find that the current economic upswing is much closer to the end than the beginning, profit growth is certainly peaking, the credit market is wide open to most borrowers on very favorable terms and aside from the past few days in early October most investors remain bullish after a ten year bull market that quadrupled the major stock market indices, and investors seem oblivious to global macro and political risks. Thus the way I read Marks it is at least time to be cautious and consequently a time to de-risk portfolios.Making one last point, I wish Marks cited the late Hyman Minsky who noted that stability leads to instability and although he didn’t directly state the converse, instability leads to stability. That would be Marks in a nutshell. Although too long and too repetitive “Mastering the Market Cycle” is worth the read. There is much wisdom here.

This book is really difficult to read if you're sensitive to themes of child sexual abuse, general child abuse, racism, and some animal abuse. Honestly, if you've been abused I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to read it for a class because it takes the perspective of the rapist during the rape scene which was really difficult for me to read personally.HOWEVER, if you haven't experienced abuse, this is a really important book. It gives you an important and vastly underrepresented perspective on the ways systems built on racism and neglect fail children of color and allow for horrific things to happen to them, and the narration of the book is actually beautiful and very compelling. It is hard to read, it is difficult subject material, but push through it. It's a good and worthwhile book.

This is a MUST read. This book is dark and powerful, poetic and real. All at once feeling like you want to run into the main character's vulnerable pain but wanting to look away at the same time. Morrison's command of writing is perfection. Absolute perfection. The forward is also very helpful to read to give context to when she wrote it, her approach and what she may have wanted to change. Wonderful to read an artist's self-reflection. If you're a white woman looking to learn more about black women and men's experiences of internalized and institutionalized racism and dismantle your privilege, this book is for you. Be prepared to cry and think hard.

One day, i was working on contract in Northern CA, many years ago. I was walking into a Starbucks to have my Saturday morning tea before heading over to the gym. I am athletically built, but will not "flaunt" my physique in public. Thus, i always wore over-sized sweats which were comfortable.A tall skinny black guy was heading toward the same Starbucks door on foot, like myself. He looked at me. He had with him his prize possession. A half-dressed, skinny asian female with him. She was cylindrically built, flat chested, no butt - but half naked. A far cry from the physique of a professional athlete. But they didn't see that. All they both saw was a black chick - probably overweight- in baggy sweats. *ugh*.Upon seeing me, his lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes went flat with absolute hatred. I've seen that look my whole life from young black men. Then suddenly, he grinned. He knew we were going into the same Starbucks, so he grabbed his lady-friend's hand and started walking quickly. So quickly that he opened the door for her, then swiftly turned around, smiled in my face - and SLAMMED THE DOOR before i could grab the handle. Everyone in Starbucks saw this action. I held my head up, walked into that Starbucks and stood in line right beside that couple. He gave me a belligerent stare wondering if i was going to do something to his "property". Though i was furious? I did not show it. Though i was ashamed. I did not show it. I ordered my tea when it was time, sat down and drank it. People were still staring even after that couple left. No one knew what to say. Regardless i did not sink that child's level. I held my head high, and sipped my tea.This bought back so many humiliations in the past of how black people treat each other. I saw it within my family, school, my jobs, everywhere.And believe it or not, i once wished for blue or green eyes as well. Anything but my liquid deep brown, big, round eyes. Having blue eyes would have stunned so many that i thought were my enemies into silence. I would have been treated better by not only my own counter-parts - but by white people as well.Actually, that turned out not to be the case. Blue eyes don't mean anything if you don't love yourself. Just like that black guy who had attained what he considers a "prize" asian female. If you hate everything about yourself, nothing is going to change that. He was projecting everything he hated about himself - onto me. If it wasn't me? It would have been someone else of his culture.Toni Morrison shows us, in this novel what the consequences are, if we seek "physical attributes/objects" to overpower the mental insufficiencies. I, and so many others could have gone the route of Pecola. In Toni Morrison's novel. A very valuable lesson is taught. Regardless of how blue your eyes are, if you're insecure? They will never be blue enough.

After rereading this book for the second time, it's amazing to me how relevant this work still is. Pecola Breedlove, One of two children born to Cholly and Pauline Breedlove, lives a very depressing life. Her Father is alcoholic who is incapable of showing anything but hatred towards women, and her Mother Pauline.....with so many dreams deferred, only finds solace when she is at work as a housekeeper. There she can pretend that the beautiful home and everything in it, including the white child of her dreams is hers. Pecola and her brother Sam know nothing of love and comfort. To top all of this off, they are considered ugly and outcast among their community. For the breedlove children, coming in at the bottom of the totem pole from school to home is normal. Pecola thinks that blue eyes will make all of her hardships and lack of beauty disappear. So she sets out on a journey to get the Bluest eyes she can find. This book chronicles so many issues....and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. It's not my favorite book by Toni Morrison but it is a must read nonetheless.

I recently reread this book. I had read it several years before. I was amazed at how much I had forgotten. Practically all of it. I want to make this review about the book and not about me, but I kept asking myself over and over how I could not have remembered this brilliant novel. I'm a middle-aged white man, so maybe it wasn't relevant enough to me or my lifestyle. Or; maybe my brain rejected the disturbing elements, which our sometimes nine-year-old chronicler Claudia MacTeer treats like they are just a normal part of life. I was much younger the first time I read this book, and since that time, having some close friends who are African-American relate to me over a beer some of their stories, I want to know. I want to know how this oppression of the soul still exists to this very day. How can the average white person even begin to understand events like Ferguson? Sadly, not very many try to. Books like this one, Richard Wright's "Native Son", Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" and so much other great literature of this genre are must reads, in my opinion, for every American. Pecola Breedlove's desire to have blue eyes like the little blonde-haired girl at the house her mother is employed as housekeeper, is heartbreaking on so many levels, especially after her own personal tragedy.

Bought this book for Grandpa after he fell and broke his hip this summer, thinking it might keep his mind off the fact that he was not as mobile as he might have liked to be. He spent his younger years fly fishing most of this great country and so this book was a trip down memory lane for him. The content was informative, the photos excellent and he was kept busy for hours exploring the old haunts of his younger days! Down side is...my husband enjoyed it so much he is now convinced that he wants to start fly fishing!

Craig's knowledge of fishing the Madison River really shines here.

It's 6 pages for $5!!! Absolutely zero information in this "book". You have to buy the hard copy. Thanks Amazon!

Extremely detailed descriptions. Served me well on prep for my first trip to the Madison...#1 item on my bucket list.This, plus the Slide Inn, made for a wonderful memory.

Don't waste your money on this download. I could have written something more useful than this "slim" summary of the Madison and I live in Ithaca, NY.I was hoping for somewhat of an update on the Mathews, LaFontaine "Fly Fishing the Madison" of 2001, but didn't find it here.Virtually worthless!

As a kindle book it is not set up to be of any use> So if I want the information I now have to buy a hard copy of the book. So twice the price for the information. This is not a happy thing
