This is, by far, the most comprehensive knitting skill building book I have ever seen. I am a knitting instructor who has been knitting for 30 years and I knit at an expert level and I design my own sweaters. I own approximately 300 knitting books and I have purchased just about every skill building book out there, including the predecessor to this one. The improvements that have been made in this edition are significant and are worth the upgrade. This could literally be the only knitting book in your library and it will get you from beginning knitter to expert.You will learn everything, and I mean everything you need to know to become a great knitter. This book starts with the very basics and brings you right through to expert knitting. The only thing that is not in here is "couture knitting" but that is a niche market and if you get to that point, you can buy Catherine Lowe's "Ravell'd Sleeve" online for $40. (That's another book that's worth the price if you get to that level).Here is the layout of this hard-cover coffee table sized book's color coded chapters ( there are extensive well done diagrams and photos in every chapter)1. Yarns and Supplies - Explanation of types of yarns including definitions of fibers, yarn twist/structure, weights, gauge, needle size, an ounces vs weights table and care of the yarn. 10 pages elucidating the various styles of needles, best uses for each kind, and knitting and crochet needle size chart and many photos and explanations of all of the other gadgets and tools needed in knitting.2. Basic Techniques: The Structure of Knitting (shows clear examples of what a knit stitch looks like and what a purl stitch looks like - very important basic skill needed so that you can "read" your knitting. Holding Yarn and Needles, Casting On, The Basic Knit stitch, Basic Stitch Patterns, Joining Yarns, Increases, Decreases, Binding Off. This is all in 37 pages of nice diagrams with explanations. There are some additions from the previous version of this book.3. It is indeed greatly expanded and updated. I own the 2002 edition and have used it quite a bit as a reference book. This book is larger, making the many illustrations and diagrams easy to see. The page numbers have returned to the outside of the page. The 2002 book was laid out differently.I like the sections on design, modular knitting, and lace blocking the most. I have a lot to learn from them. I am a little disappointed in some of the very general instructions, such as the short paragraph given to creating vertical buttonholes. On the other hand, I appreciate the detailed treatment of doing intarsia.I was disappointed to see that the moebius section and how-to did not include the moebius cast-on, but just said to twist your piece or twist a circular cast-on when joining. Section 12 has many completely dark-blue swatches that make stitch definition hard to see. Dark blue is also used as the base piece when illustrating a lighter border or band. That's not so bad. Some of the knitting on the sample pieces could have had more regular stitches or better blocking. I mean -- they're supposed to be samples in an ultimate knitting book! I found a few typos such as the perplexing "CATHCHING" in one header.Overall, I think it's worth acquiring, even if you own previous editions.

I had the original version of this book and absolutely loved it. When I heard that there was a revised edition, I decided to part with the old one and upgrade. I am not disappointed. If you only have one knitting book, this is the one to have. It goes into so much detail on literally any topic that you need. The instructions are very clear and easy to understand. The pictures are excellent. This is definitely the gold standard of knitting instruction, no matter what your level.

If someone were to request a book recommendation for a knitting book that spans technique, method, and skill level, this is the one. It is well illustrated and comprehensive. Buy it for the new knitter and they will not outgrow it. Buy it for the veteran and they will likely find continued support for growth. Highly recommended.

This is the best book I have read on the history of LGBTQ treatment by the church. I bought this for a gay Christian women's book study. It was so in depth and so good that we actually studied it twice! This book doesn't just hit the high points - the 6 verses of the Bible that seem to speak toward homosexuality - the points that Matthew Vines and other writers discuss. This book goes much deeper and has the research and references to back it up. It is so well-referenced that we ended up using works mentioned in the footnotes for further study ourselves.The author does a good job of bridging the divide between church people and queer people. Whether you're approaching this book from the position of a conservative religious person or from a secular queer activist perspective, I think this book can help you see the other side. It can be particularly eye-opening to thinking Christians to see how they have been at times used and manipulated to further political agendas - that is it often politics dictating the church's treatment of gay people, not the other way around as is commonly assumed.I think a lot of the queer history presented here is very interesting and informative. A lot of LGBT people may not be aware of some of the historical content presented here. Highly recommended. This book is so in depth that I would recommend buying it, not borrowing it so that you can reference it again.

Thoroughly loved this book.It is well-researched, well-sourced, well-written, and obviously born out of a passion for seeing and loving people for who God made them to be. This book can help us take a step out of our box long enough to wonder if we've been told the whole truth. Even if one doesn't fully agree with all of the author's conclusions, at the very least this book shakes the ground below the feet of idealism and self-righteousness.I can't speak highly enough about the lengths to which the author has gone to give relevant details behind events we all know happened, but don't know the rest of the story. I particularly appreciated the chapter on HIV/AIDS.If you're looking for a book dealing with homosexuality within the Christian world which is not written out of fear or anger or bitterness or condescension, this is it. The tone is one of empathy. Hope for better treatment of a subset of our world's population. A desire to present facts in a way that can help us draw more informed conclusions.

Kathy Baldock's impressive research and tenacity to get answers is like a missing piece of history, found. Baldock does a just job in uncovering elements of the LGBTQIA story and many parts of history and psychology she writes about I was completely unaware of beforehand and helped me to gain a much deeper and broader scope of LGBTQ history. This is a masterful work that should be in any person's library wanting to delve deeper into the debate and/or a first book to read for anyone needing better perspective on the whole topic. I would dare say I could see this book in university classrooms in the future.

The first thing the reader of “Walking the Bridgeless Canon – repairing the breach between the Church and the LGBT community (WTBC)” will notice is the amount of research that has gone into the work. It’s impressive. Far from being a dull academic work though it is ultimately very personal and extremely readable.I first met the author, Kathy Baldock, in 2008 when I was speaking at the Evangelical Network’s conference in Arizona. I’d talked about the 100 Revs, one hundred ministers who’d signed a written apology to the LGBTI community and marched in Sydney’s famous Pride parade, Mardi Gras. Kathy was just beginning her journey at this stage and getting to know people in our community. Soon after this she began her “Hurt by Church? Get a Straight Apology Here” campaign. And the rest, as they say, is history.Since the birth of the first “gay church” in 1968 most LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex) Christians were forced to find places of safety within those churches or remained in the closet in non-affirming churches. There was a huge divide and much hostility. Over the following decades an enormous amount has been written about homosexuality and the bible. I really enjoyed this read, especially how Mark goes into various strategies an investor can implement to grow a large portfolio. He describes various roadblocks that may be encountered and makes a great case for using leverage to increase returns on invested capital. It seems counter-intuitive to leverage when you can buy with all-cash but he is absolutely right about getting much better returns using leverage! Thank you, Mark!

If you follow Marks blog on InvestFourMore.com you'll know that Mark goes into serious detail about each of his investments including showing pictures, giving you the actual numbers of all of his costs, and what strategies he uses. I'm a big follower of all of his work and this book is definitely a great resource for financing multiple properties after you've reached your limit with the mortgage brokers. I definitely recommend checking this book out.

This book reinforces good investment principals and shows Mark's honest approach through sharing his experiences and changes along the way. My wife and I are at the stage of investing where this info is very timely and encouraging. If you are wanting to invest in single family homes, Mark shares the tools to get it done.

The thing I love best about this book is its name. Cupcakes and Cashmere brings to mind a frothy femininity, a combination of childlike delight and sophisticated luxury. I am always up for defining my style, reinventing my space and entertaining with ease, so this book shot to the top of my "must preorder" list. Emily Schuman's blog is a charming combination of fashion, decorating, cooking, and all the usual blogging arts. This seemed like a sure thing!Alas, it's the kind of book you give an awkward preteen so she learns to put on eyeshadow correctly without looking like a raccoon. (Except it also talks about spiking Kool-aid with tequila, so don't actually give this to a kid.) The advice is painfully basic. If we didn't know that evening sandals are more formal than sneakers, Ms. Schuman lays this out in a chart for us. We also learn how to put on our lipstick, blow-dry our hair and paint our nails. ("I usually try to do one [coat] down the middle and one on either side," she coaches.) Perhaps in a future volume she'll share secrets on tying our shoelaces or brushing our teeth.Well, perhaps I'm being unkind. I'm obviously not the intended audience for this book. The photography is lovely, if a touch blurry. I was pleased to see a section on handwritten thank-you notes, and I enjoyed the section on posing for photographs. The colors are soft and lovely throughout, as you'd expect from the pretty pictures on the blog. Ms. Schuman comes across as a sincere girl-next-door who genuinely wants to help bring out the best in others. I also liked that this book isn't overly brand conscious; you won't come away feeling like you have to rob a bank if you want to live the lifestyle presented here.The real issue is that Ms. Schuman is not extraordinarily good at any of the things she writes about. She is pretty and dresses well, but she hasn't got the experience to walk other people through a top-to-bottom makeover. Her makeup and hair look fine, but she hasn't got any pro tips to share. The simple recipes are undoubtedly delicious, but she's hardly a chef. ("Summer pasta with tomatoes, basil and brie" sounded so promising, but the instructions are basically: cook pasta. Add tomatoes, basil and brie.) The author simply is not an authority in any of these areas, nor does she have that special spark that can make a novice perspective fresh and enchanting. She gives instructions where she should be giving insight and advice; this book is all what and no why. There is a play-it-safe timidness throughout.By the way, cupcakes do make an appearance towards the end; they're made from a box mix. "I always keep one yellow and one chocolate on hand," she confides. I think that pretty much sums it up!

Immediatly stopped following her blog after this book came out. Litterally just took existing blog posts and rearranged them by season. None of her posts are revolutionary or even somewhat original. If you want to read a book that involves someone elses recipie for chocolate chip cookies or topics that are basically common sense than this is the book for you. I have been a fan of Cupcakes and Cashmere's blog for years and Emily's book definitely delivers all of the things you love about the blog in book form. I really like how Emily organized the book by seasons and touches on a style, makeup, entertaining, and food based on season. I have picked up a lot of great tips on simple changes to your makeup routine to incorporate through each season. Previously I kept the same makeup/skincare routine year around, but a lot more sense is made to add moisture in the dry winter months and other great tips!

LOVE HER BOOKS THIS HAS TAUGHT ME SO MUCH! After having my kids I feel like I have lost touch with these girly things. My daughter & I LOVE it & the recipes are AMAZING. She teaches you how to do your hair, makeup etc & she is SO classy. <3 it!!! BUy it! I am thinking of getting one as a gift for my bff & her daughter too.

I came on here expecting to be in the minority when I expressed my disappointment with this book, but it's somewhat comforting to see that I'm not the only one. Having been a fan of Cupcakes and Cashmere since the beginning, I had high expectations (considering the book had been hyped for almost a year before it's release), and advanced purchased my copy in January.I echo the sentiments of every disappointed blog reader here. The book is not only repetitive and clumsy, but it recycles 90% of her blog content (including the majority of photos).I was hoping to see information and pictures of her entertaining with her friends, dinner dates with her hubby, more DIY home hints, and transitioning different pieces in her wardrobe - from accessories to clothes, but the pictures that are included are mostly close ups and don't give you any idea of context. On the pictures, the best ones from the blog haven't even been included, instead choosing mostly outfit flops.To be honest, I have done little more than half-heartedly flip through the book after realising that I had read most of it before (on her blog). What's interesting is that Emily has always said that the reason for her success with Cupcakes and Cashmere, is ensuring that the content is fresh and informative. She certainly didn't take that approach with her book.It also feels slightly condescending, which leads me to agree that the target audience is indeed pre-teens - minus the alcoholic beverages and fake eyelash application!You may have made the top-selling list in Amazon, but that list really means nothing if you don't have the 5 stars to back it up.Martha Stewart, you are not.

After reading Emily Schuman's blog, of the same name, I decided to buy her book. I enjoyed the ideas she provided for each season. Emily makes style suggestions for entertaining, decorating, dressing and more. I think anyone starting out in a new home or apartment would like this book. It's a light and breezy book and you come away from this feeling like Emily is a close friend giving you advice. For the price, Cupcakes and Cashmere is worth a look. I think you'll enjoy this book as much as I did.

After looking at various pictures and reading several conditions, I felt that I was better prepared to speak with vets and find someone to seriously address my Boxer's condition. So happy I found it.

This book is very well organized into easy to locate categories and has many photo examples of dermpath, along with great verbal descriptions of diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis. Highly recommended for those in private practice who see the MANY derm cases the we do each day.

We us this on an almost-daily basis in the clinic. The treatment tables are especially helpful.

This book is essential to any small animal practice. There are multiple pictures for each disease and the clients love to point at it and say "Yeah, thats it!"

“It’s Complicated” was a fascinating read that shed light on a somewhat controversial aspect of our society today. The issue of teenagers and their interactions with technology is controversial because of the conflicted opinions shared between teenagers and adults. I am twenty-three years old, so it was easier for me to relate to Boyd’s opinions expressed by younger people in today’s culture. However, I also am an adult working in the professional world, so I do carry a diverse perspective. I found it very surprising and somewhat refreshing to hear her take such an optimistic role. I appreciated her point of view because she had done incredible amounts of research and conducted many interviews. Instead of acting solely on emotion or assumption, Boyd was focused on incorporating data and real-life examples. The ways that Boyd constructed her arguments throughout the book were honest and open-minded. In the ‘Danger’ chapter, Boyd stated: “As always happens whenever adults obsess over child safety, restrictions emerge and fearful rhetoric abounds (pg. 103).” I did notice how Boyd used absolutes like this throughout the book that weren’t always accurate. To say that something ‘always happens’ is an unrealistic extreme. I know parents who are overbearing when it comes to the safety of their children and they focus their fears by having healthy conversations, not automatically imposing restriction. Overall, the ways that Boyd argued were very fair in addressing both sides of the issue and giving teens a fair say in what was expressed. I found her stories to be engaging and accurate. One thing that I wished Boyd touched on more throughout the book was the issue of safety from a privacy standpoint for teens on the internet. A fear that I have for young people comes from the horror stories of young girls or boys getting involved with adults online and getting taken advantage of in vulnerable ways. I admit that this is an aspect of the digital world that I do not fully understand so I do want to know how I can better equip young people to not fall into those traps. I found it interesting when Boyd said: “When parents choose to hover, lurk, and track, they implicitly try to regulate teens’ practices. Parents often engage in these acts out of love but fail to realize how surveillance is a form of oppression that limits teens’ ability to make independent choices (pg. 74).” I see what Boyd is talking about here, but I do wonder how to achieve the balance of having some sort of surveillance without making teens feel limited. It would have been nice for Boyd to elaborate on this more. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and appreciated Boyd’s refreshing style of writing that provided clarity and perspective on a prevalent topic in our society today. I would recommend this book to be read by educator’s and parents who desire a holistic understanding on the social lives of networked teens. Boyd creates awareness about many aspects of the online world while also helping eliminate misconceptions that adults might have. If we are to better reach our students today, I think we need to be more like Boyd and try to understand their desire for an online presence from their point of view.

a thoughtful consideration of what it means to be young and online. dr. boyd writes with clarity about the ways young people negotiate invisible audiences, and the collapsing of contexts; how they contend with complicated online social dynamics, with issues of persistence, visibility, spreadability, and shaming. professor boyd is careful not to pathologize social media practice or use the panicked rhetoric we often see in the news ('millennials are doomed!' etc.). i think her chapter on privacy was my favorite. "there's a big difference between being in public and being public," she writes. how can we( better) reconcile acts of online exhibitionism and publicity with a sincere desire for privacy? overall, a great read filled with insight. recommended! five stars.

As an educator of youth and researcher of youth culture - I found this exceptionally helpful. The author looks at youth engagement in social media, not through rose-colored glasses, but with clarity and a balanced examination of the positive and negative effects and implications. In the end, readers are made aware that the interactive communicative affordances of digital media simply present new tools that young people use in accomplishing the same ends of generations past - engaging with peers in socially meaningful ways. Important to parents, teachers. and policymakers.

danah writes from experience and this translates well into the book. The content is straightforward and easy to grasp. The overall theme is that the kids are alright and parents can stop worrying. There are a lot of details and stories contained within to bolster this theme. Parenting hasn't changed much in the past century. The fact that kids go online to escape parents should be nothing new. My generation rode bikes and was away from the house from dawn to dusk. The same reasons apply to over-scheduled kids today and why they hang out online. If you're an mature adult and a parent, this book will be easy to read and make sense to you.

Boyd’s book breaks down how teen’s lives are, and aren’t affected by social media, in a world where social media is mainstream. She explores what social media adds to the lives of teens, and what it takes away. She also challenges responses to social media including the way our media sensationalizes it and can make us fearful of it, but Boyd has a way of getting the reader to see positivity in what can so often be viewed as negative. Boyd does this by looking at seven different areas. Identity, privacy, addiction, danger, bullying, inequality and literacy are all discussed in this book, which are all important areas when talking about our children.I enjoyed the first six chapters the most as I found them to be relevant to my learning and more interesting than the last two chapters. Boyd’s research shed a very different light on social media and teens in my eyes and I surprisingly agreed with most of her ideas presented in this book. For me, she brings to light how social media today is simply a modern day version of how we used to communicate in past generations. This book strives to make us understand social media from a teens vantage point and the author successfully shows us what kids are doing online, why they are doing it, and their perceptions which might surprise you. Boyd spent a lot of time talking to teens of all SES’s, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and I found reading what these teens had to say first hand as enlightening.
