I recommend, with a caveat, Marcus Borg’s book Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary. If you are a thinking Christian, you may not like it. If you are a Christian who turns your mind off at the door of the church, you may not like it either. Nevertheless, Mr. Borg has something useful for the both of you, and for those of you in between. With very sloppy applications of the meanings for the words “truth” and “reality” and a new (non-dictionary) definition for the word “literal,” Mr. Borg takes you on a detailed journey through all the significant metaphors surrounding his “developing tradition” thesis about the meaning of Jesus. He explains that very little of the gospel text is historically accurate, that is, verifiable as “facts.” He concludes that “…metaphorical narratives [such as in the gospels] can be powerfully truthful, even though not literally factual.” (page 75)I thoroughly enjoyed The First Christmas by Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan. However, the book of this review, Jesus, by Mr. Borg as sole author seems to be at cross purposes internally. In Christmas, Borg and Crossan challenged the reader to face the obvious issues surrounding the biblical Christmas texts. They didn’t shield you from the uncomfortable feelings that might well up inside you when the Christmas stories are directly compared to each other. The lack of historical accuracy is laid bare. Contradictions are exposed. In the end, however, the authors offer you a very reasonable approach to these inconsistencies. You walk away feeling that you have learned something, that these authors have enriched your Christian perspective. Not so with Borg’s Jesus. You should read Borg and Crossan’s Christmas first to get a bite-sized feel for Mr. Borg’s approach to the meanings within Christian scripture. You need a warm-up.The book earns a “4” for an excellent description of the historical context of the time and environment of Jesus. Borg delivers the most concise, comprehensive and accurate context summary I have encountered. Another positive point is that Mr. Borg routinely points out what have become glaring inconsistencies among the gospels. He details significant historical inaccuracies. He starts to challenge you to think about what you are reading, to try to comprehend these issues. But he then backs off of the critical approach to show you how to avoid discovering something other than what is currently comfortable for you. This was a missed opportunity for him, in my humble opinion. However, had he chosen to emphasize critical rather than conventional Christian thinking, he would have risked losing a significant chunk of the book’s Christian-based market. An “aha!” is his explanation of how about four or five centuries ago the functional definition of “believe” changed. Prior to that point in civilization (the Enlightenment), people “believed in.” The use of “believe” was then personal and associated with people. One believed as one beloved, he tells us. Thereafter, people routinely “believed that.” The focus shifted to believing “statements about something,” rather than “in someone.” The roots for Christianity’s shift to “believing that” can be traced back to the 3rd Century and the beginning of the development of authorized religious creeds (and the subsequent supporting doctrines, dogmas and rituals). Also very positive is Borg’s “Epilogue,” which gets very personal. The reader can learn some enlightening perspectives from his candid discourse. Here, he delivers mental enrichment. The book gets a “2” for his primary thesis that Christianity’s understanding of Jesus as a “developing tradition,” the strained logic of selectively applying that thesis, the sloppy use of the words “truth” and “reality, and a new (contrary to the dictionary) definition for the word “literal” that conveniently serves his dialectic purposes. The overall rating for this book is therefore a “3.”A “developing tradition” implies a process that generates an openly evolving story. That story increasingly distances itself from its origin in historical, verifiable facts (page 28). The resulting tradition must be interpreted according to current custom and must be read as a “metaphor.” As a consequence, it can take on any meaning the reader wants. So it does.Mr. Borg asserts that the four gospels canonized into the New Testament are a final(?) product. They are the developed tradition. That is, they are texts documenting how early Christians living during the latter half of the First Century understood Jesus. To paraphrase Mr. Borg (page 43), clergy continue to explain what Jesus should mean to us today based on what we interpret he meant to early Christians of the first and second centuries. This implies that the “development” of the Christian tradition did not cease abruptly after the gospel of John was written and frozen in time. The “developing tradition” continues unabated today.Hence, I use the more present-leaning term “developing” for the remainder of this review. The historical story behind any tradition tends to evolve into a legend, or perhaps a myth. But, for Mr. Borg, the legend/myth of Christianity is “metaphorically truthful” (page 53). He very intimately and frequently associates “truth” with the meaning of a “metaphor.” Yes, the meaning conveyed by the metaphors of Christian scripture may indeed be accurately represented in the interpretations of the texts (my opinion). However, an accurate understanding of a tradition’s or story’s meaning does not make the story true. Not factual. Not historical. Not verifiable. Not reality. “Truth” deserves to be all of these descriptors, in the positive form, whenever a written statement is claimed to be true.Think Harry Potter, or the Kennedys, or even the “neo” traditions that have “developed” around Nazism since Hitler. These modern, very real examples of “developing tradition” are not the traveling companions Mr. Borg would want to be associated with the story of Jesus. But, these examples, and many more, all fit the process he describes as his “developing tradition” thesis.Mr. Borg presents an excellent case for the “developing” aspect of the Christian tradition as accounted in the gospels. As a fact (real fact), later gospels are longer than earlier ones, more detailed, have more quotes for what Jesus said (even when no human was implied to be within earshot of him). All of these layers and embellishments of meaning were undeniably added by later interpolators onto the evolving legend of Jesus. The historical Jesus then receded in time. That overall Christian “tradition developed” over the succeeding centuries is historically documentable. Any publication focused on the history of Christianity will demonstrate this very clearly. Mr. Borg indeed accurately describes and documents the operational process of his “developing tradition” thesis. It worked throughout Christian history. It is operative today. To further support his thesis, Mr. Borg makes some comparisons of Old Testament texts to those of the New Testament. He describes Old Testament texts that obviously employ metaphorical meaning. However, he never links these metaphors to an ancient Israelite tradition that was “developed” through precisely the same process as he ascribes to the New Testament. His thesis of “developing tradition” apparently is not meant to apply outside of the gospels and other Christian scripture. We get the impression from him that the Old Testament is in fact―factual. Historically true. To be literally read. Ancient metaphorical texts are valuable for reinforcing specific metaphorical interpretations of the New Testament, as he sees them. Which he freely does. What are we to do with Borg’s developed Christian traditions―those significant metaphors not based in fact? He draws the conclusion that those Christian metaphors are (in fact) “powerful truths” (pages 75 and 287). He then devotes the bulk of the book to describing the metaphorical meanings of most of the familiar gospel situations, miracles and parables. Along the way, he searches for historical validity for these important gospel stories. When he finds essentially none, he justifies a probable historicity using a variety of statements to the effect that “it certainly makes sense that this could have really happened.”If you are not fortunate enough to have a skillful priest or minister who is routinely interpreting significant Christian and biblical metaphors for you, I sincerely and strongly recommend Borg’s well-written summary in the middle of this book. For the practicing Christian, Mr. Borg is correct. Metaphorical meaning is an essential form of meaning for Christians, whether we wish to acknowledge it or not.To support the veracity of metaphorical meanings in general, Mr. Borg redefines the word “literal.” The literal meaning of a poem, he says, is its metaphorical meaning. After offering other examples equating literal meaning with metaphorical meaning, he concludes that one gets the “literal” meanings of the gospels from their metaphorical meanings (page 69). This is not how the dictionary defines “literal.” I object. In a manner of his sloppy (or convenient) use of the word “truth,” Mr. Borg also plays fast and loose with the word “reality.” In a section devoted to the Apostle Paul, the topic of visions as experiences of Jesus is discussed. He says “…all visions are not hallucinations. They can be disclosures of reality” (page 277). The impression given is that the “reality” of a vision is the equivalent of “truth.” Truth would be insulted by association with any vision, regardless of whether the vision is a medical or drug hallucination or an honorable religious experience. Mr. Borg does not call to the reader’s attention the documentable fact that the frequency of religious visions has declined exponentially over the last millennium. A somewhat controversial explanation for the decline of “visions” is proposed in Julian Jaynes book, The Origin of Consciousness and the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. No supernatural powers are invoked in his explanation. Before the final section of this review, a bit of background is necessary. Mr. Borg divides the Christian understanding of Jesus into two phases: the pre-Easter Jesus and the post-Easter Jesus. The pre-Easter Jesus is the focus of the first half of the book. The post-Easter Jesus is the focus of the second half. Roughly speaking.Mr. Borg closes with a discourse on the Easter story. Early on in the book (Page 109), Mr. Borg shocks his readers by saying: “Many Christians are accustomed to thinking of Jesus as God...The fourth-century Nicene Creed declares [that Jesus is God]…About the post-Easter Jesus, this language is correct: the risen, living Christ is one with God, a divine reality.”If we flash back to the preamble to the early section of the book, in which he addresses the pre-Easter Jesus. Borg says: “What was his relationship to God? To state [this section of the book’s] central claim in advance, the pre-Easter Jesus was not God, but God was the central reality in his life. So the gospels present him” (page 109). I reiterate his words. Jesus was not God. Perhaps Mr. Borg is speaking metaphorically here. Regardless, the intended meaning is not clear to me.Please notice the subtle equating of “reality” with the meanings for “truth” or “fact.” Mr. Borg frequently uses this writing technique to suggest such equivalences to his readers, urging them to occur naturally and unconsciously as we read his statements, such as those quoted above. We return in this review to the post-Easter section of the book. There, as necessarily follows from his “developing tradition” thesis, the meaning of Easter for Christians, both early and current, is identified as metaphorical. He shifts at times to use the term “parabolical meaning.” He admits that useful, independently verifiable, historical or archeological evidence for the Easter story, outside of the gospel texts, is nonexistent.Nevertheless, he confidently writes, “I find these [Easter] stories to be powerfully true as parables of the resurrection. It does not matter to me as a Christian whether any of them describe events that you or I could have witnessed. It does not matter to me whether the tomb was empty” (page 287). This position is reinforced with his claim: “The obvious point is that parabolic narratives can be true―truthful and truth-filled―independent of their factuality…Seeing the Easter stories as parables need not involve a denial of their factuality. The factual question is left open…A parabolic meaning insists that the importance of these stories lies in their meanings” (Page 280). “I highlight their [the Easter stories] meaning as parable, as truth-filled stories. I leave open the question of how much of this [actually] happened, even as I affirm that their truth does not depend on their public factuality” (Page 281).But we humans often prefer to not distinguish between “fact” and “metaphor/parable.” Such distinctions require deliberate mental effort. If a passion or belief is deeply and emotionally significant to us, it appears to us to be much more than a “developed metaphorical tradition that is powerfully truthful.” One would be hard-pressed to find a practicing Christian for whom the bodily resurrection of Jesus in the Easter sense is not an automatic “fact,” in the full, historical, unadulterated, non-metaphorical and sincerely truthful sense. This book will be a roller coaster ride for a Christian who rarely asks “why?” But, Mr. Borg offers you a safe and reassuring ride. You may be uncomfortable at times. In the end, all will be as it was. Or, if you paid attention and engaged your mind, all may not be as it was.

I had read Marcus Borg's original book of which this one is a kind of "replacement". I have only just started on this one, but it is pure Marcus Borg, and as such is "right up my alley", ha ha! I've been a student of the (so-called) "Historical Jesus" movement for quite a long time. Borg and Crossan and Ehrmann and Spong and many other "professional" scholars have been like colleagues to me, though I've only met Jack Spong a couple times. While I think of myself as an "amateur" in this area of study, I have been on this journey of discovery as long as most of these fellows. It is a rare thing for me to have a big "aha!" moment any more, but they teach me how to better articulate ideas, while also providing substantial source material. It has not been yet one month since brother Marcus died, and along with many others I am both in mourning and thanking God for such a marvelous prophetic person as was Marcus Borg.

The same Spirit that was in Jesus is in us. The difference is the degree to which he lived in unity with and related to God's spirit within him, within others and within the world. As Christians we look to Jesus as our pointer to this way of closer communion, commitment and relationship with God and how to live daily with love and justice in this world God loves, now as Jesus did then. There is much I have highlighted as important to me, things that have been clarified, things that have challenged me and things that have encouraged me in this thought provoking book by Marcus Borg. I find it difficult to live with question and find great encouragement in his ending that from the moment we are born till the day of our exit, we are in an ongoing conversation with God about Jesus, life, love and justice. Thank you for making me examine my faith and to live in the tension of knowing that today and tomorrow I will learn and experience so much more about God than I do right now.

While this is touted as a final volume, I'll be honest in that I can see where this could very easily continue in a spin-off or continuation volume somewhere in the future. Despite some pretty heart-breaking losses to the Hack/Slash team, there's still a lot of potential here for some one-shot volumes along the lines of My First Maniac. There's both some good and bad about this omnibus, though. First my criticisms. I liked this volume as a whole, but I'll be blunt in that at times it felt a little choppy- no pun intended. The continuity is mostly fairly linear, but occasionally it just felt a little choppy and I sometimes felt like the series sacrificed flow in order to put in various cameos and cross-overs. I enjoyed seeing Dr. Vincent Morrow from Witch Doctor show up and I also enjoyed the introduction to a few other series, but at times it just seemed a little too abrupt. Not enough to ruin it, but enough to where you'll notice. This has been a pretty common issue with the series as a whole, although I'll definitely state that the cameos/crossovers were better handled in this volume than they were in previous volumes where they featured the Suicide Girls. People familiar with the series will already be aware of issues like this so it won't really be anything new, but you will probably wonder why they haven't really found a way to better deal with it by now.Other than that, this volume really does have to be one of the best one of the series when it comes to the big finale. I won't state who dies at the end of this, although once you read it you'll figure that this was probably the most likely ending. Not the ending we all probably would have wanted for the characters in question, but this is what honestly feels the most natural. If you've collected the series thus far, you'll definitely want to get this one to finish out your collection. For all its troubles, this really is a fun series and a good volume to have in your horror comics collection.

Well, after issue upon issue, story by story, Hack/Slash has finally come to a close. And boy was it something! I never knew that a comic book would have me on the edge of my seat, but this really did it! The final battle to decide the fate of America was a perfect blend of action, cheese, and drama that you would expect from this series by now. Oh and SPOILER ALERT: some important characters die in this. This is a great omnibus to pick up!

The book/content itself is great, but this particular product arrived damaged. The box it came in had no damage, so I'm assuming it was shipped like that. The front cover was almost torn through in one spot and there was black scrape marks all over the back of the cover. Since it was a gift for my husband and I knew he wouldn't care since the pages weren't damaged, I didn't pursue a replacement. But if this had been for someone else, I wouldn't have been comfortable giving this as a gift in the condition it came in.

The artwork as great with less variation of artists than the pervious ones. I personally love this series and was sad to see it end. Overall it was a great ride with lots of memorable characters from talking dogs to slashers to reanimated dolls just love how they got a large portion of the slashers from movies. Forgot Freddy and Jason though. Cassie Hack and Vlad and the gang are just awesome.

A great read and good fun all around.Through I am rather happy that the Hack/Slash general arc around the black flame society has come to an end.The sideline stories in the B-Movie Jungle and the background of Vlad were some highlights to me.The final confrontation was a bit underwhelming in terms of actions and the final adversary but the intensity of Cassie really pulled the omnibus through.Minor spoiler: "Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. "

perfect condition great product thanks

The characters are great and interesting, This finale brings everything to a satisfying end. The artwork in this volume is probably the best in the series. I

Outstanding end to a great series. Wish there was more.

This Will Be My Undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female, and Feminist in (White) America, by Morgan Jerkins

Review

“Without turning linguistic or lyrical cartwheels, Jerkins lucidly articulates social dynamics that have dictated the realities of American black women for centuries…. Indeed, [This Will Be My Undoing] is a book I wish everyone in this country would read.” (New York Times Book Review)“In Morgan Jerkins’s remarkable debut essay collection, This Will Be My Undoing, she is a deft cartographer of black girlhood and womanhood. From one essay to the next, Jerkins weaves the personal with the public and political in compelling, challenging ways. Her prodigious intellect and curiosity are on full display throughout this outstanding collection. The last line of the book reads, ‘You should’ve known I was coming,’ and indeed, in this, too, Jerkins is prescient. With this collection, she shows us that she is unforgettably here, a writer to be reckoned with.” (Roxane Gay)Morgan Jerkins is a star, a force, a blessing, a scholar and a critic, and now can add great American essayist to that list! I found myself sighing, nodding, gasping, laughing, and crying while reading this collection–but mostly cheering!  We can all sleep well at night knowing this country will inherit heart, mind, and soul like this. It’s safe to say I’ve never read anyone this young–barely at quarter life!–who can understand herself, those around her, past and present, with such dignity and clarity and generosity. Intersectionality in America is dissected, investigated, celebrated and challenged all without being pedantic or preachy or pretentious. And Jerkins is the sort of benevolent intellectual you want to spend time with–who will never lie to you, but also will never let you lie to her. I’ve long known that feminism and arts and media owe so much to the excellent work of black women and This Will be My Undoing is yet another testament to that. (Porochista Khakpour, author of Sons & Other Flammable Objects, The Last Illusion, and Sick)“Each chapter provides insightful, personal, and frank analysis of how several identities can and do overlap with one another.” (Library Journal Review)“There’s a radical honesty and warmth in these essays, no matter the topic.” (Alexander Chee, author of Edinburgh and Queen of the Night)“Threaded together by prose that is at once tender and disarming, Morgan Jerkins’s debut collection is an invitation to conversation with a ferocious intellect and a singular, uncompromising voice. In essays that confront the forces of anti-blackness and misogyny, Jerkins demonstrates that being unflinching does not require that we be unmoved. Readers who encounter this debut will be hard-pressed not to have felt something shifted within themselves when they put it down.” (Alana Massey, author of All the Lives I Want)“Jerkins is one of the smartest young writers of her generation, and this is an insightful, revelatory collection of personal essays about a variety of today’s important issues. So fantastic.” (Bookriot)“Jerkins’ forthright examination of her own experiences leads to a triumphant reclaiming of blackness in all its power.” (Booklist)“Jerkins’s debut collection of essays forces readers to reckon with the humanity black women have consistently been denied. Her writing is personal, inviting, and fearless as she explores the racism and sexism black women face in America... [a] gorgeous and powerful collection.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Jerkins has strong character, and This Will Be My Undoing is likely just the beginning of her influence on the role of black women in the United States. As she is careful to point out, she is just one voice and her story doesn’t speak for all black women, but with any luck her one voice will inspire other voices to add to the chorus of change.” (Shelf Awareness)

As a white high school teacher and moderator of a race awareness group in a predominantly white high school, I was excited to read this book along with the students of color in our group. The three girls who read the book said that they had never seen themselves or heard their voice in a book as they did in this one. I found the author's voice to be unflinchingly truthful and therefore incredibly powerful. The girls and I were fortunate enough to attend a book reading by the author in Princeton, NJ. The author was just as honest and insightful in person as she was in print. As a white person, I experienced a range of emotions reading this book. There was much guilt and shame about my ignorance and insensitivity, but the author, even when being brutally honest about how she has been unfairly treated by white people and the system, is unfailingly kind, hopeful and she has a wry sense of humor. We cannot wait for her to complete her next two books.

I identified with this woman in so many places though we probably couldn't be more different in some ways. I actually cried when she was trying to fit in with white girls trying out for the cheerleading squad. My tears were happy when she described the meaning of Michelle Obama. I squirmed when she wanted the black boys to find her attractive enough to sexually assault (smack her backside) I loved her for giving us a sense of Harlem and a sense of what an attitude of respectability politics looks like when it's falling away. I felt less alone when she spoke of achievement and success not coming fast enough and sometimes relationships not coming at all. I was grateful for her section on daily meditation, accepting ones own black beauty, and forgiving mothers and grandmothers who couldn't teach us to stand tall because they grew up just trying to survive. This is an amazing black girl book for black girls who didn't grow up in all black spaces

This collection is essential and compelling. Each essay's blend of personal, historical and political, offers an unflinching examination of...Well, you can read the blurbs for yourself.I particularly appreciate the way Ms. Jerkins portrays her evolving relationship with her own body. Her model of self-care is inspiring. It's rare to see confidence and vulnerability rise to the page in tandem so beautifully.

I am thoroughly glad one of Morgan's sisters, who I know from undergrad, told me that she was coming out with a book. While I'm sure I would have come across at some point, I made the effort to keep it at the forefront of my mind. I have been telling people that this book is coming for what seems like months now, and it did not disappoint in the slightest.I have at least half of the book highlighted, and a list of other books and papers to add to my list of things to read in the near future. I related to so much of her thoughts of her past, and of her present. I can also relate to some of the industry struggles, as a BW trying to move up in politics. A tad too personal and raw for me in some spots, but what's a little discomfort if the author herself is willing to be so vulnerable?A quality read for black and non-black women.

Could not put this down. Beautifully written.

Everyone should read this, especially white folks like me. As a woman in my 40s I was not sure it would resonate with me, but Ms. Jenkins honesty, wit and vast intelligence broadened my view of the intersectionality of race and most other issues. At this point in history I believe it is imperative for us feminists to peel back the layers of liberalism and face racism head on. This book will help you do that no matter your age. READ THIS book and buy it for a friend or daughter.

If you're looking for a book that sugar coats---this isn't it! Jerkins is raw about her experiences and emotions about being a black female--an education black female. She's also encouraging and uplifting the black female and with the current social climate--it's so necessary.Jerkins is very open and honest with sharing f her personal experiences with her black female body and honestly--it's wonderful. She's very confident in her writing and as a reader and a writer, i'm appreciative.I'd recommend it to everyone--not just black females but ESPECIALLY black females. I'd recommend it to everyone--not because it's going to give you some life changing insight to black females because--well--if you're not a black female, you will never full understand BUT if you're open minded--you'll get SOME insight.Grab your highlighter, notebook and pen!

Beautiful prose that spans memoir, anthropology and history. Fresh, thought provoking and intimate. Author presents reasoned analysis of her experience in the context of a Euro-Centric society that is not haughty. The emotions evoked by this book ran the gamut. I constantly found myself picking up the phone to discuss with friends.

#26,825 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is one of those stories that I think people can really benefit from reading, because this life-long thief and, later, serial killer had exceptional skill at charming people and getting them to trust him immediately. Even police who had dealt with his countless burglaries for many years didn't think he could be violent. He would visit new friends and just stay. People who had just met him allowed him to live with them for free. He befriended 4 young women just out of high school sharing a condominium and moved himself in. He then charmed and manipulated 3 of them so completely that they allowed him to live with them for months for free and believed his increasingly implausible tales and excuses while he brutally murdered 3 women in the neighborhood.

I am a Jack Olsen fan so while I did like the story, I was amazed by the mis-spellings, fractured sentences, and confusing synopsis (not always using the right word or mistaking one character for another). Still I do like the writing and the story. I'm an English Major so maybe I'm just a little too picky?

In the very early 90s, I was the night crew manager of a grocery store in downtown Kirkland. We had just finished "throwing freight" -- a fancy phrase for stocking shelves, basically -- when a police officer came in towards the end of our shift. The sun was just coming up. I asked him, "How's it going tonight?" He responded, "Bad night. Somebody killed a gal. We found her near a dumpster." Surely not the response I expected, particularly in Kirkland. Murders seemed to never happen there. But the murder actually happened in Bellevue, a few miles away. I didn't think much about it again for a long time, even though it was in the papers. And more murders were to come. But about a decade later, I read another true-crime book -- I believe "Riverman. . ." by Dr. Robert Keppel, another excellent read -- where in a chapter or two, Dr. Keppel described a serial murder case in Bellevue that he had been involved with: this case. Immediately I thought of that night over a decade earlier in Kirkland. Back then while I was stocking, I was probably grumbling, under my breath, "Why do I have to be up all night stocking while everybody else is out having fun?" If that's what I was thinking it was surely a bad assumption.I've been intrigued by this case for quite awhile, so I finally bought this book online this week. I finished it in a couple of days; it would have been only one day if I hadn't been sidetracked by prior commitments. The book is that good. I've read books by many other crime authors -- Truman Capote, Dr. Keppel, Ann Rule, M. William Phelps at least -- but this was my first read from Jack Olsen. I really appreciated the fact that Mr. Olsen sticks to "just the facts;" he actually describes this style of writing at the very end of the book in an Author's Notes section. Too many true-crime authors go off the rails a bit with conjecture. A little bit of conjecture is good; too much and it becomes, well, just conjecture. And the biggest conjecture really is: why did George Waterfield Russell -- "Waterfield" to distinguish him from a million other George Russells, most of them "good" -- begin killing? Was it the common belief that, because his mom left him TWICE, that he became a misogynist? Was it that he never felt like he fit in, being black in the predominantly white neighborhoods of Mercer Island? (I'm white and I don't like many of the "islanders" myself, I'll admit.) Or was it something else? I'm sure there are a million excuses.Mr. Russell -- and yes, I do cringe using the "Mr." prefix in this case -- was like a stray cat, begging for a bite to eat, and if he suckered someone into giving him some catnip he was likely to hang around for more. And hopefully you never really were a victim of his long and deadly claws. But one of the gals that he lived with -- make that "mooched off of" -- later made a statement that was perhaps the most truthful thing about a guy who seemed to be such a huge liar. "I believe that there was something neurologically different about him from the beginning and he would have gone to this lifestyle anyway." She goes on to say that Mr. Russell probably doesn't even know himself why he went down such a dark path. Indeed.I moved on from night stocking, moved on from Seattle to find an area with more sun. Maybe it was all the rain that made Mr. Russell turn out bad? That's a common theory about all of the serial killers from Seattle, and I will admit, the gray skies can easily get you down. Would he have turned his life around if he had moved to sunny San Diego as he had planned, just before luckily he was arrested? Probably not. I'll agree with his ex-roommate. And I'll also agree that a great book can come out of a horrible tragedy.

Absolutely incredible true crime story. Jack Olsen did it again with this book-it was very hard to put down. I have read other Jack Olsen books and this one was of the same fine caliber. The only regret I have was that I finished reading it too soon.

Jack Olsen was one of the great true crime writers and this is one of his better books. I've seen this story before on American Justice and other crime shows you don't really understand the true nature of this evil and manipulative creature until you read this book. He truly seems to have fooled almost everyone, including the courts. He never suffered much in the way of consequences from his very long rap sheet of minor crimes but you see how he developed slowly from a petty thief to an evil serial killer. Should be a wake up call for people who cuddle young people - their own or others - and teach them that their actions don't really have consequences.Outstanding book and highly recommended.

This is a good story. But could have been better with 1/3 less in between bull and all the typos and other errors. It was like tripping over sentences the entire book. Well actually I didn't read the whole thing...half way through I started skipping chapters and didn't miss a thing. Not Olsen's usual quality but then again you get what you pay for.

I love true crime books and serial killers are fascinating to me.When I 1st saw A& E's City Confidential's,"Sunny Days,Deadly Nights On Mercer Island",I became fascinated in George Russell.I bought "Charmer" and have read it twice. The late, great Jack Olsen does a great job of telling a story of a African American youth whose family moves to a mostly white area, who starts acting, and talking white in order to fit in,whose mother deserts him twice leaving him with his step father, and grows up with a rage that finally explodes with three murdered young ladies.George was unique in at least three ways,he was a African American serial killer,he "posed" his victims for shock effect to the persons or person who found the body and to leave a profane message"! He also killed girls he knew, most s.k.'s kill strangers. My only complaints of a truly great crime book were,no photos and the last chapter,The Epilogue, was about a un-named visitor who visited and interviewed George in the pen.Was the visitor Jack Olsen?? A must read for any true crime-serial killer fan !!!

Review

Praise for Nine Continents: Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography Shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize Shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award “Vivid―and funny . . . [Xiaolu Guo] has done far more than simply ‘survive’ the hardships and dislocations of her life. She has triumphed . . . Nine Continents shows the rewards of listening to an unleashed voice remembering and speaking with full freedom.” ―Wall Street Journal “It is the journey through heady, whiplash times that helps us understand where the nation is going . . . Perhaps [her elegy] for vanished homes in China required distance to write. . . A laojia [old home] exists not so much on a map but in the heart.” ―The New York Times “Guo is a bolder, angrier and more ambitious figure than her forebears . . . A subtle achievement of language . . . [with] a wry, matter-of-fact, bittersweet tone that accommodates the pathos and cruelty of her story without lapsing into self-pity.”― The Times (UK) “This is autobiography as Bildungsroman or indeed as Künstlerroman . . . Aside from the fast-paced plot, this is most interesting for its probing portrayal of Guo’s ambivalent relationship with her homeland . . . Moving and often exhilarating.” ―Financial Times (UK) “The most compelling Chinese memoir since Jung Chang’s Wild Swans . . . Guo’s writing is more personal and poetic than Chang’s crisp, scholarly prose―and more openly angry . . . She’s refreshingly fierce and funny about the flaws she finds in British culture.” ―Telegraph (UK) (5 stars) “By turns raw, intelligent, compelling, sad, uncompromising and reticent . . . Guo’s talent is to highlight all those things about China that make it so different while simultaneously making it somehow seem both familiar and comprehensible.” ―South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) “Guo is . . . rebellious, flamboyant and fundamentally optimistic . . . Some of Guo’s narratives of herself are staggering . . . Fascinating.” ―Scotland on Sunday (UK) “This autobiography is her account of fiery, artistic defiance and a testament to the act of storytelling . . . Guo writes in the audacious, restless and fragmented prose that has become her imprint: a feverish style that can be as merciless as the world she portrays . . . [A] penetrating writer.” ―New Statesman (UK)

As someone who has grown up with two wonderful, caring parents to support me, I found Guo's book to be especially heart-wrenching. Her family history, and the way she overcomes her humble beginnings and the hyper-restrictive culture of China in the 1970s and 1980s to not only find herself, but travel overseas and find love and success in the UK, is truly inspiring. Yes, there are many darker or painful moments in the book, but Guo does an excellent job of revealing flashes of insight from Chinese culture through folklore and storytelling, and she has a way of putting in subtle humor and personal remembrances that make her immediately accessible as a person. After reading this book, I feel like I truly have met Guo, and her strong, creative spirit adds an understated current of optimism throughout the book, despite her tragic past.

A fascinating story, and a compelling read. The author writes in fairly short chapters, which makes for ease of readability. In a country with as many people as China there must surely be many others that could recount similar experiences, but Xiaolu has told hers very well, from her days as a small child in a remote fishing village on China's coast living in poverty with a long-suffering grandma, and a troubled and violent grandpa, through reuniting with her parents in a growing industrial city, to Beijing for studies, and her eventual move to UK: she tells it all in clear and spare prose.Parts of her story are disturbing, and some not for the squeamish, and others tug at the heart strings. It's the story of a girl struggling to escape the circumstances of her childhood, the tensions of her own family, and the barriers to her creative spirit. Finally, she finds a partner and has a baby - but she never tells us whether or not she found the love that was missing from her life. I hope she has.If you are interested in personal stories, this is a good read. If you are trying to understand modern China, you should read it: it doesn't represent all of China, but it surely informs us of a part.

This story of youth compelled me all the way along—Nine Continents provided me a precious window in to one coming of age in China. I could well imagine teaching this with Oedipus Rex. Her voice is unsentimental and direct, which is important to her theme, and yet she doesn’t fetishize that....which is tempting for a writer, I’m guessing. Finally, I felt that I learned something about coming of age in China at a certain time under certain conditions....something one cannot glean through other means....and it IS so very gratifying to feel enlarged by one’s reading choices. Bravo to her for the book and for the courage of her life...

I learned so much about growing up during China’s cultural revolution! So hard to be a girl born during those years. Real insights into complicated family issues.

Great book, and thanks to the audiobook I was allowed to read along at reasonable pace even with my poor vision. Thanks!

Very interesting story so well written. Recommend highly.

This book was written beautifully. I loved the way each chapter was a story in its own right. Xiaolu is a remarkable woman and a wonderful writer. I highly recommend.

I'm not typically a memoir fan as the story usually suffers from that first person bias that comes with telling your own life events. I picked this book up solely as an amateur historian interested in a first-person account of post-Mao China. I never expected that I would get to read my favorite memoir of the year.Guo's memoir is a world apart from so many that I have read. It starts slowly and small, as the tale of a young girl abandoned by her parents would. The scenery of each part of her life is vibrant in description but you also feel the stifling, abusive weight of it as she searches more and more for herself. Though the tone is calm, there is a lot of violence in young Xiaolu's life and it ages her soul. As you read, your connection to her grows ever stronger through all her struggles. I out loud congratulated the author on her first big success and felt true, sweet joy for her. Many fiction books never get that response for me, let alone a memoir. I have so much respect for this woman, for the life she has led, and I wish her every happiness and success in the future. A tale of resilience and triumph through every struggle, and about being true to yourself.Note: I received a free Kindle edition of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Grove Atlantic, and the author Xiaolu Guo for the opportunity to do so.
