This book is essentially a sequel to An Embarrassment of Mangoes. The author and her husband return to sailing around the Caribbean. The book revolves around their travels to various islands. It contains witty and funny stories about the people they encounter, the differences of the islands, and most of all the food. The writing reveal a deep longing and fondness for the experience they had. The recipes are delicious and, if you cook them while reading the book, more deeply connect you to the experiences and people described.It is not quite as good as the original, partly because it is missing the subtext of the original departure from their busy lives, the authentic conflict of learning to live on a boat, and the newness of visiting the places that Embarrassment of Mangoes presented us with; however it does contain more deep character development, more detailed descriptions of places, and is eloquently told. If you like the escape of An Embarrassment of Mangoes then this is a good choice. If you haven't read it, read it first.

I wish they talked more about the boat and voyage just as much as the food. I love the descriptions of the cooking and spices and perrpers of the islands. I think they could have squeezed a small page before each country about the summary of the voyage and conditions in between. The authur(s) cultural idiosyncrasies are amusing and apparently proper polite Canadian dialects. The dialect adds to the clear picture of polite Canadians in unique cultural situations. Pretty entertaining.

I have really enjoyed the book. Here first books was a very entertaining read about their travels in the caribbean. This books takes un into the kitchens of the people they met. Vanderhoof has taken the time to get to know the people in her travels. They have shared with her how they create those dishes. My wife and I have traveled the caribbean for the past 10 years but we have never been in one place more than a week to get to know the people to the same depth that Vanderhoof has. She recreates those recipes which I have tried and found to be very good. I'm currently making the pepper rum from the recipe in this book and am excited to try it. I love the culture, food, rum, and people of the caribbean. The food and flavors of the caribbean are rich and spicy. Vanderhoof takes the time to show where some of the flavors have originated from. Then those flavors are infused into there own national dishes. Vanderhoof gives people an insight into those cultures through food. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This is the second part of a memoir about a Canadian couple's solo journey through the Caribbean on a small sailboat. Both are "foodies," and each chapter ends with a recipe using seasoning and ingredients native to the island they're visiting -- moreover, the "flavor" of the islands permeates the story as well as the food. The first volume, "An Embarrassment of Mangos," is the more adventurous story -- because they were such novices (such uptight novices) that it's easy to relate to two people on a 42-foot boat who see the dentist and the lawyer (to write their wills)before leaving Ontario.

I loved, Loved, LOVED An Embarrassment of Mangoes, and waiting impatiently for another wonderful Journey with Ann and Steve. However this one left me a bit cold. It just didn't seem to have either the passion or the heart of the other book, and often seemed disjointed. Maybe I wanted more of the sailing life, and this one is definitely more the eating life. While her food descriptions and recipes remain top-notch, I guess I was looking for more stories and relationships.

Bought this for my mom to read while she was on vacation in Grenada and she said it was wonderful.

It's snowing here, but we have tried several of the recipes as we prepare to move aboard our boat and head south. The people, the places, the tastes -- all are vividly presented. Cannot wait for our own adventure to begin so we can savor some of the more exotic tastes of the Islands.

I hope Ann continues to write more books. The way she brings the people and places to life on the pages is the next best thing to being there.

I don't recognize very many of these songs, and the chords seem to be stiff and old-fashioned. I have newer books that are better arranged than this one. The skill level is also a little higher than intermediate, at least for me.

Excellent collection of songs

I love the old music and broadway musicals. I started playing the song immediately and I loved the arrangements. Highly recommend this if you love old music.

My son sight reads everything, but this has great songs with the lyrics too. Makes you want to sing along.

I've now ordered 3 of these books - gave 2 to piano-playing friends. It's a great combination of the new and old songs, lots of Broadway, many sing-a-long favorites - all around my favorite book now.

This is one of the most impressive free kindle editions of a book that I have read. It is taken from a 1902 printing (a 2nd edition) that was reprinted from the posthumous edition of 1777. It includes endnotes and an extensive index put together by L.A Selby-Bigge, a late fellow of University College, Oxford. There is a table of contents at the beginning with hyperlinks. The endnotes also have hyperlinks, which makes it easy to read the notes and jump back to the text. The index also has hyperlinks. This is the first kindle freebie that I have seen with these features. This is handy for this type of book. Note that Hume is Scottish and the book was originally written in English.I have always had an interest in philosophy and history and finally got around to reading this foundational work. The title describes exactly what this book is about. Hume starts by giving a brief introduction to philosophy and then jumps into the main questions. The biggie is where do ideas come from? How do we understand things? What is instinct, inspiration? It is interesting that his answers to these questions still hold up well to modern thought.Hume wrote this book at a time and place where Calvinism still held great sway and God was thought to be behind every thought and action. His ideas were radical and I was interested to see how he tried to delicately handle ideas that would potentially offend many of his readers.I highly recommend this seminal work to any one interested in philosophy and enjoys stretching their minds a bit. This is something I will refer to often. I continue to enjoy the access my Kindle gives me to great classics like this.

Rene Descartes (1596-1650), "the father of modern philosophy," was a rationalist who attempted to attain certainty by discovering "first principles" on which he could overcome skeptical doubt and establish irrefutable truth. He claimed that one thing is absolutely certain: Cogito, ergo sum ("I think, therefore I am"). From this solid rock on which to stand, he proceeded to claim that by reason alone he could prove the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, and the reality of an afterlife.Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was trained in the rationalist tradition, but when he read David Hume's work, the impact shattered his way of thinking. In the preface to his `Prolegomenon,' Kant stated that reading Hume woke him from his "dogmatic slumbers." If Hume was right, then metaphysics, as Kant had previously believed it, was impossible, nothing but "sophistry and illusion." In his most famous work, Critique of Pure Reason, Kant wrote, "I have therefore found it necessary to deny knowledge [that is, show the limits of reason and human understanding] in order to make room for faith."An empiricist and skeptic, David Hume (1711-1776) was born and died in Edinburgh, Scotland. His magnum opus, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748), like Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (1781), is one of the key texts of the 18th-century Enlightenment. Taking a dim view of miracles, mysticism, and metaphysics, Hume skeptically asserted that empirical proofs of religion (such as the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, and an afterlife) are not possible. In effect, he was saying (to paraphrase Kant), "I have therefore found it necessary to deny knowledge [that is, reason and human understanding] in order to make room for lack of faith [that is, to make room for skepticism and unbelief]."In the famous last paragraph of his Enquiry, Hume writes: "When we run over libraries, persuaded of these [empirical and skeptical] principles, what havoc must we make? If we take in our hand any volume: of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance, let us ask: Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and experience? No. Commit it then to the flames: For it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion."Hume clarifies the terms "a priori" reasoning (deduction) and "a posteriori" empiricism (induction). Deductive reasoning is done "before experience," such as the mathematical conclusion that 2 + 2 = 4. Inductive reasoning is done "after experience"; it is the scientific method (forming hypotheses, performing experiments, and observing phenomena). The former process, "abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number" (as in mathematics and geometry), does indeed produce certainty. However, the latter process produces, at best, only probability (albeit often a strong probability), based as it is on the assumption of "the uniformity of nature" (that the universe will be the same in the future as it is in the present). Therefore, Hume's "empiricism" is qualified by its open-ended character (as scientific hypotheses are subject to revision as new evidence is produced).Hume's "skepticism" is also qualified. The author may not convince everyone but challenges anyone that reads his philosophy. So you will be challenged, intrigued, motivated to question some or all of your convictions, or be persuaded to agree with the author. But more importantly, you will adore Hume.

#TheSugarSmartCookbookForKids #NetGalleyI felt like you could sit down and listen to the author of this book. It offered a lot of sage advice. I had a lot of similar experiences with eating. I am glad to hear I am not the only one and it also provides some advice. Its not a eat totally healthy book, its an eat better/ live better book. I found a lot of recipes that I can't wait to try out and a few that won't work for my family, but I always figure if I can't get one or two recipes out of a book I am doing good, and I found several. I also liked that she touched on portion control. It makes a big difference. Great book.I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

The "for kids" in the title of this book means the goal is to reduce sugar in your child's diet, not cook them with your child. That being said, the recipes are definitely targeted at reducing sugars in your family's diet...which should be everyone's goal. It is very difficult to manage your family's diet when they are not at Home so it's doubly important to insure their Home diet is healthy.This is an excellent reference book with many new, delicious recipes that my family has already designated as "keepers". I've already tagged many more to work into our menu. This cookbook is definitely earned its place in my kitchen.

This cookbook had some interesting recipes, particularly the dressings and the salads. I was hoping for more discussion about helping children detox from sugar and also discussion about how to help children help make the recipes. I admit I was also somewhat turned off because this cookbook has a strong religious bent (Christian) that wasn't mentioned in the blurb. While that doesn't discount the recipes, I didn't like feeling surprised that I was reading a book with a clear religious aspect.

Really liked this cookbook! I am trying to get away from all the super processed and sugar laden foods for myself and my family. This helps with finding things that my kid will actually eat. I already made 3 different recipes from it. So far, so good! And I bookmarked a lot of other recipes my son wants to try next. (Two thumbs up on the Banana PB Pancakes and fruit leather, according to my 5 year old!)

As I'm diabetic I'm always interesting in reading cookbooks with recipes that contains reduced sugar.There were some interesting recipes and I will try some of them.Highly recommended.Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC

The author is refreshingly honest when she mentions that it was difficult to change her children’s eating habits and that some compromises had to be made. However, she mentions that as adults the children grow some of their own food and that they are eating healthy foods.There are quite a few sugar-free recipes in this book - some of the applesauce, oatmeal, main dish, breakfast, snack, jam and salad recipes use no sugar in their ingredients.The jam recipe uses fruit and flaxseed meal, and it can be kept for a week.One of the oatmeal recipes uses oats, apples, cinnamon and salt. There is a recipe for Black Bean and Corn Stew with a Citrus Sauce that sounds delicious. The recipe for Chili Dog Soup sounds good too, and there is no sugar used in that recipe!Some of the other recipes use sugar, honey, peanut butter and other sweeteners but at a much lower amount than that used in processed foods.Enjoy introducing your children to a healthier menu - what starts early will usually carry on to adulthood!
